| Excitement coughing? Has anyone ever heard of this? When I first took Teddy in because he was coughing, the vet prescribed amoxicillin because he felt Teddy's throat and noticed that it was sensitive. Well, 2 weeks later after the amoxicillin was complete I took him in to the vet again because the cough had not gone away, in fact the amoxicillin had no effect on his coughing. Well, the vet thinks that it might be that he is "coughing from excitement" as he started coughing when he was taken to get a fecal, however he still prescribed him albon suspension...has anyone else had this problem, does this make sense?

| He's 4 months old, and the cough is not a honking noise...it's just a cough.

| Pups who are prone to reverse sneezing often do it when excited. Here is a video of what it is like:

| I don't think meds should be given if it's just reverse sneezing! I'd find a Vet. who can tell for sure, but you did say the Vet. said Teddy's throat was sensitive and that sounds like a trachea problem for sure. Just don't put collars on him and only use step in harness because all other harnesses do come up too close to the throat.

| Both my dogs reverse sneeze sometimes when they get excited, but a cough sounds so much different than a reverse sneeze. I would try another vet That is just my opinion, not all vets are right. Your puppy is young and it would concern me to have him on meds if he doesn't need them. maybe take a video of him doing it and posting it and haveing people her on YT give their opinion.

| Yeah, one of my IGs reverse sneezes, but she never does it when excited. It was so sad watching that video, the dog looks just like my 16 yr old Pita who passed last January.

Albon is approved for the treatment of infections caused by organisms that include Staphylococcus, Escherichia and Salmonella. Among the infections it treats are respiratory infections including tonsillitis, bronchitis and pneumonia; skin infections; anal gland infections; skin wounds; urinary tract infections; and infections in the uterus. Read more: What Is Albon Medication for Dogs Used For? | eHow.com What Is Albon Medication for Dogs Used For? | eHow.com If the Albon doesn't clear it, maybe a throat culture & sensitivity and xray (to rule out CT) and bloodwork would be the way to go, as coughing can come from a number of causes. A video is not a bad idea either.... When did he begin coughing... had he been around other dogs or get any vaccinations close to that time? How long has he been coughing? Does he cough more at any specific times, like after eating or drinking, when he's barking and excited, after/during strenuous exercise, at rest, or at play?

| I assume he got the Bordetella vac (kennel cough) for the puppy class?. They can sometimes develop a cough after this vaccine (usually a deep cough) (a milder form of the illness). It should clear up in 1-3 months. As it happens at any given time, I don't think it's an excitement cough. One of mine also has a chronic cough, and I can cause him to cough even when I pick him up if any pressure is put where his throat meets his upper chest area... also where most harnesses touch him. Also he makes a definite hacking sound at the end of each coughing episode. I did notice improvement when he was on Doxycycline for pneumonia, and my vet suggested just to give him that when I felt it may be getting worse. She did the chest xray, which included his neck... well his whole body, and if he has a trachea problem, it's where his trachea meets his bronchii at the top of his lungs. It won't hurt to finish the Albon, your vet may just be trying different meds which they do sometimes, instead of more expensive tests. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, it is a method some use, is all. Was his mouth checked for any foreign type stuff like hair that can get stuck in their throat occassionally... Other than that, if it doesn't clear up in 2 months or so, or gets worse at any time, I would persue further testing on him. IMHO.

| Glad to hear Teddy's doing better... and, yes, it is coincidental and one really doesn't know if the meds worked or if the cough cleared on it's on... that's why it's important to finish the meds, bc if they are stopped and it was a bacteria, it could return and become resistant to the medication. It does take time to establish a good relationship with a vet. I think it's also important to know some basic Yorkie info, as Yorkies (and small breeds) need more specialized treatment than larger dogs. There are articles in the YT Library that have specific info on different topics, such as vaccine and anesthesia protocols, emergency situations and more that Yorkies owners should be aware of and become familiar with. It's sounds like you're being a very good Yorkie Mom. We're all here anytime you have any questions or concerns about your baby, (or anything else too) and I believe with Yorkies, it's always better to be overly cautious than not concerned enough!

| WOW, how ironic. Bella does the 'reverse sneezing', not NEARLY as severe as the poor baby on the video, just a couple or sounds for 5 secs and done. She has done this a few times, and had both me and my hubby saying......HUH????? He thought her episode was asthma, now we know. Gosh I love yorkie talk!!!!!!! |
