I assume he got the Bordetella vac (kennel cough) for the puppy class?. They can sometimes develop a cough after this vaccine (usually a deep cough) (a milder form of the illness). It should clear up in 1-3 months. As it happens at any given time, I don't think it's an excitement cough.
One of mine also has a chronic cough, and I can cause him to cough even when I pick him up if any pressure is put where his throat meets his upper chest area... also where most harnesses touch him. Also he makes a definite hacking sound at the end of each coughing episode. I did notice improvement when he was on Doxycycline for pneumonia, and my vet suggested just to give him that when I felt it may be getting worse. She did the chest xray, which included his neck... well his whole body, and if he has a trachea problem, it's where his trachea meets his bronchii at the top of his lungs.
It won't hurt to finish the Albon, your vet may just be trying different meds which they do sometimes, instead of more expensive tests. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, it is a method some use, is all.
Was his mouth checked for any foreign type stuff like hair that can get stuck in their throat occassionally... Other than that, if it doesn't clear up in 2 months or so, or gets worse at any time, I would persue further testing on him. IMHO. |
