| Your sweet puppy could just be severely dehydrated. My youngest Oakley who weighs a pound and is only 10 months old got severely dehydrated 2 days after I got him in June. He just laid in his bed, vomited, coughed, and just couldn't stand up, and also didn't respond to anything. I quickly got on the phone with his breeder (as her daughter is a close friend) and she said to immediately get unflavored pedialyte and feed it to him through a baby sipper. After about 5 sips of the pedialyte Oak started to come around. She then told me to get raw chicken, from a can, and feed it to him in little bites. He was fine within about 30 min. This has happened 3 times since and the vet said it isn't a rare occasion! Hope your puppies better! |

Raw canned chicken...sounds nasty to me, who cans raw chicken? never heard of it! I was always told about Karo, Nutrical and the generic prescription of it-forget the name-wish the Op would post an update...this no update seems worrying.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I don't think they can raw chicken. I think perhaps she meant just the regular canned chicken. Nutrical and Karo are good for hypoglycemia, which can accompany dehydration, but don't treat the dehydration it's self. Both should be given in small amounts and followed up by an easily digestible protein (such as canned chicken) to prevent a rebound hypoglycemic episode. As for the pedialyte, my vet did recommend I give it during a bad bout of dehydration with my doxie. Dehydration is one of those things that is more easily prevented than treated. It progresses quickly. This is one of those things that you should discuss with your vet before it actually happens so that you have the right supplies on hand. An update from the OP would be nice.

| Pedialyte is fine. The ingredients are not toxic to dogs. It really shouldn't be given if pancreatitis is suspected. And if a pup is dehydrated, at home treatment with Pedialyte probably isn't a good idea.

Oh I totally wasn't trying to imply Karo for dehydration...it was for the hypoglycemia strictly... I though Nutrical did have some effect on dehydration...I'm still learning here too

I'm curious, Ellie May, what about the pedialyte is contraindicated with pancreatitis? Thankfully, that's one thing I haven't been through with any of my dogs, so I don't have any personal experience with the do's and dont's.

| Usually pancreatitis patients can't have food or water by mouth for at least 24 hours. It's a stretch to go ahead and let them have the water. Using Pedialyte instead is a bad idea because there is sugar (dextrose) in it and so you might as well be giving food. The sugar being given when the pancreas needs to rest could present a problem. Ellie's vet and I had just decided that if I thought she was having an episode, this would not be a good choice. IV fluids are best followed by SQ.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Thanks. That's what I thought it might be, but again, I don't have any first hand experience with it.

| I am so sorry to hear your new yorkie is so sick. When I first got Buster he had a really bad heaving cough. It was a bad case of kennel cough that we treated with antibiotics for a month. He was getting better but he got a shot and had a relapse so he had to be hospitalized on IV fluids and antibiotics for 3 days. He also had coccidia and giardia so he was pretty sick. I made sure to give him nutrical a couple times a day to keep up his strength. I got a humidifier and would steam him when he had a bad coughing attack. I hope that the shots did not weaken your puppy's already compromised health. So please take your puppy to a vet quickly as they are so small their immune system is delicate.Your puppy may require a lot of nursing to get them healthy again but the love and bonding experience of taking care of such a precious little life will be worth it. Remember you were looking for something to love and take care of you are just getting the hard part first. Best Wishes to you and your new puppy. |
