| One of the main things I have learned is that they're chair hogs! I just lost my chair on the patio and am now sitting on the step!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this thread. Dad's been in hospital and I only check in for a few minutes so I am just reading this and VERY surprised. First of all -- you said you were not working and continuing to pay for vet visits was NOT something you could continue. I thought you meant that. You also asked for help when you posted here. Now you accuse me of preaching to you for offering options and possibilities about the itching, saying I should not tell you what to do or how to care for her? I am really sorry you took it that way. I gave several alternatives as a means of paying for vet visits, as continued health care for her is important. I did not lecture or treat you as a child. I really am sorry you were offended. Yours was not the first I had read that day of someone not being able to afford medical care for their dog. When that happens, you need options. I did not offer only one option or tell you which to pick -- I thought I worded it in a way that showed the choice was yours. If you can find other ways of paying, I am not sure why you made that comment. I also offered some suggestions for the itching. Sorry if you had already considered them, but I thought I would try to offer help. I am glad you are the kind of person that cares so deeply that you are offended when you think someone is questioning how much you care about your dog but I assure you I'm NOT doing that. I took you at your word that you could not continue to pay the vet bills so I thought offering some other ways of getting the vet bills paid for was the INTELLIGENT thing to do. I imagine if I had stopped at the insurance and credit card options, you would not have been angry. But especially in these economic times, there are people who have to turn to rescues for the good of their pets. It was not meant as an insult or sermon. Angeleyes -- I take great offense of your comment which is attacking me personally with the immature comment about opening brain before commenting. I did THINK a great deal before posting that. I wanted to make sure I offered alternatives that they could consider before letting a pet go without vet help. I meant no harm, no belittling and certainly do not deserve your insult! LadyJane -- thanks for sticking up for my comments and seeing they were made in good faith. Most of all -- I am glad to hear she is doing better. That is the important thing! BTW Armyvet -- I am also a veteran -- a Navy retiree -- 22 years active duty. I can stick up for myself too, but I also like to stick up for the little ones we love so much. Glad you are that sort of person too!

| FlDebra: First of all, let me say that I am sorry for your father, and, Thank YOU for your service. I did not take offense to the suggestions or recommendations, only to the, what I thought were accusations, about not caring for my baby girl. If I took them wrong, I am man enough to admit that. I do appreciate the suggestions I stated, just not the recommendation that of giving her away, or that I would not do the right thing and care for her. Angelees was only reacting to my over rwction, so please do not take offense. We both misinterpreted your post, and for that I, accept my appoligies. Ladyjane: thank you for that info. I read up a little on rice, and was amazed to see that it actually has quite a bit of liquid stored in it. So, although she is not drinking, she is still getting fluids which I am so enthused about. kjc: Her bowls are ceramic (I think). She eats out of one, but refuses to drink out of the other. Matching set, go figure! There is also a large plastic "Le Bistro" which is my Cousin's (his dog Heidi's) which she was drinking out of as well. Now, she will not drink from either. Her Mom has suggested getting new bowls, and that may be she is associating her getting or being sick with those bowls... I guess it makes sense, to someone anyways... I gave her a wet meal of rice, chicken and gravy baby food, and chicken broth. Shortly after, she grabbed a cookie which fell out of the box when I was moving things around. About an hour later she ran to her pad and had very soft stool, almost diarrhea. Not sure if it was the food mixture or cookie, so her next feeding was more dry... No cookies on the menu, and she is such a little sneak!! She grabbed that cookie and ran under the bed laughing the hole time!!! Little booger!!! Anyway, she just finished her meal, and is now napping as usual... Of course, she had to bark, growl, and complain about bird outside the window first... I guess as long as she continues to go pee, she is getting fluids, but we are going to get new bowls tonight or tomorrow, just in case... |

When one of my older dogs was sick, I used to give pedilyte. When she would not be drinking much, I figured at least she was getting some good electrolytes. I also got some of the flavored to entice her a little.

The protocol with allergic reactions is to reduce the # of stimuli to the minimum possible. So first, do no harm. Discontinue the meds. See what the symptoms are. Then talk with a vet about alternative treatments for the symptoms that remain. | |

| May try the pedialyte tomorrow. I am comforted knowing the rice is at least giving her some fluids... Thought about adding some type of flavoring to her water... Any ideas??? The generic benadryl is gone. Only name brand from now on, wewll, once she gets better anyway. She did really good on it, I just figured the generic would be ok... I was wrong... Also getting a new water dish tomorrow and more baby food... |

| For loose stools I have used plain canned pumpkin no spices just plain. Maybe mix a teaspoon or so in with the chicken and rice? |

| YorkieUSA: Your right, the ice did not work... She played with it for a few minutes and then left it to melt... Steel going pee though which is a good thing. Vet tomorrow regardless if she drinks or not... As of yet, still no drinking. She had rice and baby food this am, and a few pieces of Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Potato & Duck formula. The Vet said it is a very good brand, and my Cousin just happens to feed it to his dog... Funny she would not touch the Purina One Lamb and Rice I got her, but she went straight for the NB. Soft stool today, not wet and loose like yesterday. Just wondering if it was the cookie or the chicken broth rice mixture... Here in a while, I am going to go get a new water dish... Fingers crossed that she will drink out of it... I am wondering if she eats enough dry food if she will drink... Could be that she isgetting enough fluids in the rice/baby food mixture????? Am really at a loss!!! Tried a plastic ice cream bowl, a traveling doggy dish, metal dog bowl... She will lick off my finger, the condensation off my water bottle... But it is more like a "Because I have to lick" than an "I am thirsty lick"... Ay Chihuahua this Baby!!! Enough to make me go bald!! Oh wait!!! I am bald!!! |

| I'd say she is getting plenty of fluid through the food. I feed NB, but not the duck. Mine eats it really well. I'm going to order Ladyjane's brand that she was talking about and start mixing that with my NB. I like to mix them. I know they can drive you over the edge when they're sick. You wish they could talk! It is so hard to figure out ways to get them to eat and drink. I hope she starts doing better soon. She sounds like she is improving some and at least isn't going downhill. That's something.

| My Cousin just brought up bladder or urinary tract infections. Am beginning to wonder if that could be the reason she will not drink. She is still picking on the NB, a few pieces here and there, which is normal for her, but not drinking is really getting to be worrisome. I tried 3 different bowls again, and she looks as if I am crazy. The only thing running through my mind is worms, urinary, or bladder infection... Am really wondering why the ER Vet did not bring up any of those as possible causes... Thinking I might take her to the Vet now... |

| If she is not dehydrating, I am not sure why such a heavy focus on her water intake. She gets water in her food! Check her gums...if they are wet to the touch, I am sure she is fine!
