| ![]() My yorkie (Lady) gave birth this evening to three precious little puppies. One however was born with its eyes open. It seems strong and keeps fighting to get up to her belly but he wont latch on to her. Lady keeps separating it from the other pups. I have taken the other two puppies away momentarily and left it alone with her. She cleans it and lays down for it but it wont latch on. I have squeezed a little milk out to tempt it but nothing. I don't know what to do. I have called the animal emergency clinic and they have told me to try bottle feeding it, keep it warm, and make sure to stimulate it. It is a little fighter. Is there any techniques out there that I haven't tried yet. Please please help. I don't want to lose this little one. ![]() Julie |

| ![]() I posted your question in the Breeder Forum where experienced breeders might see it. Praying for the best for this little one.

| ![]() Sometimes a puppy that is weak will not latch on until he gets some help. Buy a can of goats milk (it is in the aisle near the evaporated milk in WalMart-if not ask for it at Walmart) Or you can get a little from the mom for this. Mix can of goats milk with 2/3 can of water with 2 tsps of karo syrup and 2 egg yolks. Warm a little of it each time like you would for a baby. Use a syringe without the needle and feed him 1 cc every couple of hours. Very slowly so he doesnt choke. Do this day and night After a few times, he may start to eat on his own --or it could be several days before he is able to. Good luck with the little guy |

| ![]() I have always used an eye dropper for hand feeding. With the dropper, it's easy to control the flow so the baby doesn't aspirate. I've never added the egg yolks but do use the goat's milk formula and feed 1cc per ounce of body weight every 2 hours. I had never heard of one being born with its eyes open so googled it. It does happen once in a while and the eyes need to be kept moist and will sometimes close like they should. Here's the info I found. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The puppy should be able to close its eyes and usually that is what I have seen. You might want the vet to check for eye lid abnormalities to see if that is the problem if the eyes do not close. I found that using saline or mild boric acid eyedrops such as contact lense wearers use moistened the eye enough to allow it to close. You may want your vet to stitch the eyes shut for the next 10 days to protect the developing tissue. If you do end up using eye ointments then make sure to keep the tip of the applicator sterile so no infection happens." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From this link: POM PUPPY BORN WITH EYES OPEN AND NOT ABLE TO BL... - JustAnswer

| ![]() Check the baby for a cleft palate too. Sometimes that is the reason they do not lath on. I hope not, but you should check. Hold the pup up and get him to open his mouth, even if you have to stick your finger in a bit to separate. Then look at the roof of the mouth. Is there any hold, slit,or incomplete closing there? If so, it is cleft. Depending on the degree of cleft, it can be very serious. I tried to save a cleft palate baby from another breeder who was going to let her be put down. She did not make it but after I got her I found out the cleft was the full length of the roof of the mouth. It was the worst scenario. Many wrote to encourage me and I found there are several here with cleft babies living long happy lives. Again, may not be the case, but a quick check is in order.

| ![]() Just went through exact same thing. (Don't know about being born w/eyes open. That's a new one to me). After several tries on different suggested diets, a friend of mine who had just been though this with a cleft baby, told me to do the Leersburg diet. 10oz. undiluted goat's milk (Walmart or grocery store), 1 tsp. Karo, 1 egg yolk, 1 cup whole milk yogurt. Dannon makes one. Mix altogether and get your vet to show you how to tube feed or get a really good 'pet' bottle for small aniimals. Petsmart has a better on than the ER Vet! You have to cut a tiny 'x' in the top. Be careful and look because some of these bottles come with a pre-cut hole and it's too big! drown the little guy. I tube fed until today when my hubby found the right kind of bottle and today my little guy started on the bottle. Weighed 4.5 oz. at birth, dropped to 3.4 before I realized what was happening (I had pneumonia). Born 9/13. Today he weighs 7.2 oz! (9/29/10). But you need to either start out tube feeding if he won't suckle, or bottle feed if he will. Feed every 2 hours until 2 weeks, then you might can go to 3. If he really starts striving, you might can go every 3 hrs. in the day and every 4 hrs. at night til he's 4 weeks old. Then every 4-6 hrs., but if he's doing well, start weaning and begin w/baby food----chicken. I'm not a vet, so you might want other opinions. Just telling you what I know works. Good Luck! Keep us posted. |

| ![]() Well an awesome thing has happened. My husband went to Wal-Mart (at 3 am this morning) bought the puppy formula in the pet department. While I was at home I put up against my skin under my shirt (I know it sounds weird, I was desperate) and it warmed up!! Then it really started moving around. When they hubby got back with the bottle and formula he prepared the bottle and it took about 10 minutes of putting tiny drops on the pups tongue and then the pup took to it and began sucking from it. I just gave it a little bit and then I took it back to its momma. My husband sat with them until after 4 helping the baby latch on several times to its mom. We went to bed about 4:15 this morning and woke up at 6 for work Lady still had the puppy with her and wasn't seperating it. The situation is the same tonight!! YAY. The baby is nursing, Lady is cleaning it and keeping it warm, and the pups eyes are not as open as wide as lastnight. I am so thankful for all of your guys info. Its great to be able to talk with people that have experience in these kinds of situations. I appreciate it so much!!! |

| ![]() The mother has taken the baby back. Lady is not rejecting it and it is nursing after staying up till after 4 this morning teaching it how to latch on. It is doing great. Mom is cleaning him and most importantly keeping him warm. Its eyes are starting to close too. I hope he keeps thriving. Thank you guys for all your advice!! ![]() |

| ![]() Glad to hear your good news! I know how nerve-wracking it can be when you have trouble with one of the babies! They are so tiny and you know you have to help but it is not always evident what to do. I am glad that most of the time, they just work it out themselves. This time it looks like your minor intervention was just the thing to give the little guy the right idea.

| ![]() That is such great news. Word of advise: Get A Scale and weight that baby at least twice a day, AM and PM. This way you can make sure he's going in the right direction. If he starts going backwards, get back in touch with someone on this list. ![]() |
