Otherwise he is acting fine. I keep trying to keep him in his crate in a quiet area to rest, but he wants to be out and about. Yesterday he was wimpering some. When I called the ER, they told me to give the highest dose of Tramadol. (I had only given him 1/2 ml but the label said 1/2 to 1ml 2 to 3 times per day as needed.) After I upped the dose, he was MUCH better. He even wanted to play in the middle of the night.

ok that is good

make sure when you give the metacam do it mid meal in case they did not tell you so you give 1/2 meal then metacam and then 1/2 meal as that is the safest way for him to get it. Yes make sure to follow pain meds so he does not have any pain as once they wear off it takes a while for them to kick in so you do not want him in any pain

I learned about pain meds after i ruptured my achilles and had surgery and they said never let them wear off

It was clearer when I first brought him home, but it is yellow now- not dark, but yellow. Should I not give him the Metacam? I don't know if it is a fluke, but it seems like he urinates better after he takes it. He gets it once a day. Yesterday when he had his good pees, it was after taking it. Today, when he finally peed, it was about hour and 1/2 after. I feel so confused.

Do you think he should still be looked at Kellie?

I am not a vet and i cannot see him so i can't really tell her that.

there is going to be blood in it because he just had his bladder cut open.

follow what vet said and if it is working then do it just if any vomitting or diarrhea call vet. It is working as it is an anti-inflammatory so it is taking the inflammation down and helping

You really do need to keep him quiet since its so soon after 3 Major surgeries. He needs to be on crate rest for a few days at least. it is still too early for him to be out and about. carry him around if you want but he should not be running, playing, doing stairs, jumping, or on furniture in case he jumps off. With the pain meds, sometimes i think its best for them to be slightly in pain so that they realize they need to rest. If he feels great then he's gonna think everything is ok and he might injure himself.

yeah makes sense about blood but should she have him seen or do you think she can take a wait and see approach as i know you have more experience since you worked for a surgeon with this stuff

yep 10000000% AGREE with this as that is the downside to pain meds they think they are ok when they really are not and will not rest unless you make them

do you have a pack n play for babies on rollers or a stroller for dogs as you can keep him in there and roll him from room to room with you so he is with you but resting and confined

follow your vets instructions. the metacam is for the inflammation and its easier for him to urinate because its taking down the swelling of his bladder and urethra. it should get easier for him to urinate as the days go by. Yellow urine is good urine. LOL

also you do not need to give the metacam in the middle of his feeding. just make sure you give it with some food because it can upset the stomach in some patients. either give it after a meal or give it with a snack, just not on an empty stomach.

the reason mid meal is because it can cause ulcers in the lining of stomach. It is a strong med and i prefer to surround it with food - NEVER on empty stomach it can perforate a human bowel so it can do the same in dogs as well. Read those links from the FDA i posted. I personally do not think a snack is enough food

but that is just my opinion from what happened to my dog as vet gave it on empty stomach and it was a NIGHTMARE but my dog is mvd and is on temarilp which was another NO NO but vet felt it was safe - NOT

I know they are going to catheterize him. His little penis is just so swollen and red. That was alot of pee that he dribbled out and he is acting normal. He just ate his food is taking a nap now. (finally) I'm sure he feels relieved that he emptied his bladder. I am going to keep a close watch on him. Can I use one of those digital baby thermometers that you put in the ear on him? Are dogs' ears like ours?

Best to get a digital thermometer for babies as best to do in butt and use a little ky jelly then clean after with alcohol. The ear ones are not as accurate and i would not use the glass ones either

it is fine if you prefer to give it that way to your dog with those problems on those medications.

you need to remember that there are thousands of dogs that are given this medication with no problem what so ever. just because a few dogs have a problem with it doesn't mean the administration for all needs to be changed.

use a plastic digital rectal thermometer with some type of lube (surgilube is what i use) if you want to take his temp. the ear thermometers are not accurate
