Help!Oscar can't pee after bladder stone surgery Since it is a holiday weekend, I can't get in touch with my surgeon or any of the vet techs that have worked with him post op. His surgery was Friday & he came home yesterday morning. He peed in drips that created decent puddles up until last night around 7:00. Then he began straining throughout the night. His little red penis comes out when he strains but goes back in. He slept off and on thru the night. Woke up at 6:45 and strained with no luck. Finally at 7am this morning I saw 2 little drips of pee on his blanket. It is now 10:30 and he is still straining with no urine. The vet tech last night told me that it is normal for him to strain after the surgery (she worked with Oscar post op), but this was last night at 11. The receptionist answered the emergency hospital phone for me this morning and told me that the doctor on duty does not know Oscar but that if the vet tech who worked with Oscar said that it is normal, it is not an emergency until it has been 24 hours. I am so worried. Has anyone experienced this? Thanks |

capt noonie dog had bladder stone surgery I am going to try to get her over here to answer this |
I don't think letting urine build up for 24 hours is a good idea. Did the receptionist answer your question or did they ask the vet? I would call an ER facility and talk to a vet there if he is continuing to strain. Straining and then getting urine out is one thing, but straining and only producing a couple drops does not sound good. |

So he hasn't urinated since 7pm last night? He is straining and nothing is coming out at all? did they just do a cystotomy or did they do anything else? where x-rays taken after the surgery to ensure they got all the stones out? The surgeons i worked for always kept cystotomy patients for at least 2 days to ensure they were producing enough urine and not straining too much. sometimes a urinary catheter needed to be put in to help for the first few days. personally i'd take him in. It doesn't matter that the ER docs don't know his case, that's what records are for and if the ER is the same hospital as the surgeon then they should have everything they need. The vet needs to try to pass a catheter to see if there is anything blocking the urethra. If he can't get it in or if its hard to get in then an x-ray should be taken. an x-ray definitely should be taken if one wasn't done after the surgery. hopefully they got all the stones out and its not that kind of problem. |
