I am not sure if there are any Yorkie Rescues in my area, we have Noah's Arch and a small breed rescue. I do not think UT takes rescues any more. They did at the time Dr Tobias was doing research on Liver Shunts, but all the yorkies in that trial have been adopted out.

well....i too have followed this heartbreaking thread from the start.

it kills me that all this time later, melody is still hurting, banging into walls, blind, bloated....dying....while this thread continues to go on and on. people here have offered advice and help to a degree that goes far and above what most owners of sick pets receive....and yet krystal still has yet to update us herself in some time.

krystal....if melody has not already died, it is imperative that you turn her over to rescue. you are her owner and the only one who can help her. turning her over to rescue is not something to be embarrassed about. the people involved in rescue organizations are the truest, most dedicated animal lovers on the planet. they will go to great lengths to save melody's life now, and provide for her care down the line.

the idea that a member of this forum could swoop in and make melody well, at no cost to her owner, and then return her...may have sounded great...but it is fantasy and probably something that should be avoided down the line. in this case, intentions were no doubt great but like others have said, intentions don't mean crud if poor melody dies while we're all typing away and offering kudos to each other for offering to help.

there is no more time for screwing around. the op is not thinking clearly and i worry we're encouraging that with all of our talking and hashing out options and especially debating rescue vs. private citizen. i can imagine her sitting there reading this and second-guessing the need to turn melody over or doubting the integrity of rescuers. BIG MISTAKE! if a dog ever needed rescuing, this is the one! i feel like we're all standing by, ringing our hands, watching somebody torture and kill a defenseless animal. i see no difference between what's happening to melody and what happened to that poor dog who was beaten to death by his owner's bf. frankly, that dog likely suffered less than melody. krystal needs to know this. not turning melody over, for whatever reason, is just wrong. it is irresponsible. eventually, if not already, it will be the death of melody.

krystal, as difficult and stressful as things feel now, imagine the guilt you'll feel then. now is the time for you and only you, as her owner and the person responsible for her well-being, to take action. period.

it's times like these when i wish child protective services was applicable to furbabies and human ones alike.

Rose Melody undate for her YT Family

Good Morning Ladies,

I've read some of the posts not all but felt I should post for now and I'll go back and read the thread.

Talked with Krystal this morning to check up on Melody. I see in her post the she explained the Melody was bloated. This sometime happen when the change in food occurs and the added medications.
Melody had have now "pooped twice". Her tunny is bad to normal and is better this morning. Krystal's vet and also the specialist her said it would take a few days for medication to start clearing out bacteria from the system.

I'm expecting a call later this afternoon from the specialist with recommendations pertaining to Melody. Spoke with a few doctor's yesterday and even though surgery maybe an option, it's not always the necessary means to solve the problem. A lot of facts have to be taken in consideration
and even thought surgery many be indicated, it's not always the best option. Especially when you referring to a very small yorkie and in this case Melody falls in this categories.

If Melody starts to show any discomfort and problems, I told Krystal to call the vet and get any medications necessary. At this point Melody needs to gain a little weight and clear the toxins from her system.

I'm not trying to keep any information from any our members. I've tried to post when necessary but felt that Krystal needs to express her feeling through her own posts. I'm keeping in close contact with her to make sure she knows all she has to do is make a phone call.

Their's more but I'll post after I finishing reading the posts and PM. Sorry about the delay.

Kathleen

Im glad you updated but in my humble opinion this is all just speculation on your part...... I honestly find it ODD that any specialist would make an assumption with out physically LOOKING at Melody? My vet wont even give me meds for a simple ear infection or diagnose my puppy with one with out me brining her in and her LOOKING at her ears....
You mention a specialist.. Has Melody seen one as of yet.
I think it is wonderful that you are a phone call away but you stated earlier that Melody is 3 1/2 hours from you , that is a 7 hour round trip visit if something would happen to Melody!!
Id honestly still like to know what made you make the decision that Melody is better off in her current home with a owner who doesnt have the money to care of her. It is my opinion that you are making decisions based on phone calls, I find it odd that none of these DRS have said I NEED OR WANT TO SEE THIS PUPPY BEFORE I CAN MAKE ANY RECOMMENDATION. I have personally seen a puppy weighing less then 3 pds make it out of a sucessful Liver shunt operation... she lives a good live.
Speculation is NOT going to get his puppy anywhere!

One question Kathleen,

Is the Specialist in contact with either Dr. Tobias and/or Dr. Centers.......both are pioneers in the LS field and are very available to consultations. A suggestion I highly recommend in determining whether this wee one is a canidate for the surgery.

thank you for the update. at least we can stop wondering if melody has already died. even so, it's beyond troubling that melody has yet to actually be seen by a by a qualified medical professional...and it doesn't sound like that is in her near future.

am i missing something?

That's great. Truly.

But Melody is not going to be "doing better." This is NOT a disease that goes away or cures itself. When Liver Shunt prevents itself, one of two things will happen:

1) The dog will get surgery and it will be fixed

or

2) Nothing will be done, and the dog will die.

There is no avoiding death if liver shunt isn't taken care of. It may not be immediete, but it WILL happen eventually. and Melody will have a miserable, miserable life until that point.

She NEEDS help. I understand that she loves and doesn't want to give up her baby, but if she can't pay to save her life, THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION.

Sorry to disagree, but there is a 3rd option: and that is Medication. Dogs that are not good candidates for surgery are put on the medications that Melody is on right now for life.

But SHE WILL HAVE TO GIVE HER UP if this little one is to be helped and yes people could donate to help pay for her surgery. I need to look into the after care but I would be willing to foster her as I have two special need girls and I love them. They have a very special place in my heart
This sounded like a good option to me. After reading all of the previous posts, I will only donate if she is surrendered to a rescue group. I am not trying to be mean but I think this is what is best for little Melody.
