Rectal Prolapse Hi Everyone, This is my first time posting hoping to get some moral support. I just came back from the emergency vet leaving Magnus who's only 8 weeks old. Finding he had a slight rectal prolapse, I took him to the vet right away and ended up with surgery. He came home with me the same day and was told he should be fine till tomorrow when I bring him back for a check up. Having his dinner, he tried pooping but was still having a hard time and straining. But he did poop and it was very soft. After I gave him the prescribed meds, he pooped again but was straining even harder and was literally flipping out. Thinking it's b/c of the surgery, I thought he would calm down a bit but than I started seeing little bit of blood dripping out and he seemed to be in so much pain that I decided to take him to the emergency vet. They said they'll keep him comfortable until the surgeon takes a look at his bum. His initial check up showed no other issues. He was perfectly happy, energetic, and showed no signs of pain/irritation before this issue which came up on new years eve. Please pray for him. Thanks...

Thanks and no, I'm not his or any type of breeder. He actually came from a very irresponsible breeder and came to us when he was way too young to be taken away from him mom. The vet said rectal prolapse does happen to puppies sometimes and there could be varies causes but heart worms were usually the most common. And so I've started him on his heart worm meds. (The reason I haven't done so is b/c the original vet said not to while he's taking current meds for his prolapse.) He seems to be doing fine right now and just being a brat. The ER vet also supplied some pain meds so he'll be on that for the next 3 days. I'd post a picture of him but I haven't read the direction as to how yet but I will soon. He's really adorable and the family just loves him.

| If he is only 8 wks old, it should not be heart worm... he hasn't been around mosquito's! I hope all is well for him. How long have you had him? has he ebeen constipated before the first strain that prolapsed him? Keep us posted..

ow long have I had him? The answer will most likely horrify you as I was very upset when I found out how old he was. He was about 4.5 weeks. Long story short, the situation was totally out of my hands and I did try to get the original owner (don't even deserve to be called breeder) to take him back for at least few more weeks. In that short time, it seemed she already sold off rest of his siblings and had no intention of letting him stay with his mama. In any case, I figured he's better off with me in this case. He didn't show any signs of discomfort or constipation before. He was eating/playing/peeing/pooping just fine. Which is why I'm so baffled as to why this happened. Update on his condition: He pooped 3 times. The first two before food, which seemed like he was straining a bit. After his dinner he seemed to be having a easier time and not straining so much. (I mixed his canned food with little more water, I think that help alot) He seems to be panting a little more than usual though. Is that normal? Other than that, I think he's doing ALOT better than he was last night. Although, he's starting to turn into a bit of a spoiled brat since I'm letting him get away with alot more than I usually do. (Off topic question: The vet tech mentioned he looked more like a silky than a yorkie. Any thoughts?)

Oh most definitely does NOT matter what he is as long as he's healthy and happy. Just asked since it's always nice to know what sort of puppy I have. LOL

I had puppies with constipation problems before, and a baby carrot a day takes care of it. But never prolapsed rectal. It seems that you have figured out a good vet to follow up with you. I also think that at his age it is too soon for heartworm, but again, i would not be a specialist... could he have it before you picked him up??? After what you mentioned about his age, i guess anything would be possible. I wish you the best of luck and blessings, and hoping that was just a phase and it is gone ! Lets pray no more issues! I can sure agree that he is way better off with you than... with his previous supposed care taker. At least you care ! Blessings to you both and happy new year ! XOXO

Update: He just went poop for the first time today and was straining alot. I didn't see any signs of blood in his stool but he was having such a hard time it's painful just to watch him. His poop was soft but hard enough to pick up. It wasn't like the 3rd time he went last night where it was little watery. I think that might be why. He's not flipping out from pain though so I think it's somewhat of an improvement? In any case, I will be calling the vet tomorrow and perhaps take him in again. The ER vet mentioned that the sutures might be little too small. I'm currently feeding him Science Diet can food mixed with alot of water. Can anyone suggest something better? I'm sort of force feeding him more water as well. I'm also giving him his meds as prescribed. I don't know how to make it easier for him to poo. -_- And thanks for everyones support. I was bit worried that I'd be getting little bashed for keeping a puppy so young but than again, the situation didn't leave me much choice. In any case, thanks again and I'd appreciate any and all suggestions.

Update: He went poop 2nd time I think after dinner and he seemed to be having a easier time. But still sensitive as he wouldn't let me go anywhere near his bum to wipe off the poo that's hanging. (cotton with warm water) But other than feeling bit worn out, he seemed fine. Playing and being a brat as usual. Now... I'm having a bit of an anxiety attack b/c I've been so worried about Magnus. My mind is acting overtime as where I'm waking up to EVERY noise so I'm constantly feeling really tired. I'm worried about tomorrow asking questions like: what time will he poop? is it going to be as painful and straining where he's going to yelp while pooping? Am I feeding him the wrong type of food? Maybe I should've taken him to the vet today... etc etc... It's good that I care for my puppy but I don't want this to get to a point where I'm going to get sick myself. -_- Any emotional advice anyone? This is really starting to take a toll.

Update: Magnus threw up ALL his food. I added some greenbeans to his regular can food. I called the ER vet and asked what I should do. She said that shouldn't have had effect on it and suggested not feeding him for 12 hours and maybe some blended food like boiled rice/chicken. Any idea why he's throwing up??? It seems like it's only his food. I don't think I see anything else that looks like bile. He also seem to eat fine. Last edited by Magnus; 01-04-2010 at 05:18 PM.

Wow, I absolutely cannot believe that anyone would let a puppy go so young. Mine are not even weaned at that age. I have ever heard of a prolapsed rectum. Sounds painful. You could try a little dark karyo syrup in his water. But you don't want to make him too loose either. The poor little guy.
