| gastritis; now diagnosed with pancreatitis ava got really sick yesterday and i had to take her to the hospital; she was vomiting a lot and some blood in the vomit; they did blood test and her amylase enzymes was high; her white blood cell counts was low and i believe her platelets was low too; i dont have the papers with me; i will get them today when i pick her up from the hospital. she was diagnosed with pancreatitis because of the amylase high levels. so now i dont know if she has both gastritis and pancreatitis. anyway i spoke to the vet today; ava is on IV fluilds and they will prescribe presciption diet for pancreatitis; i am assuming royal canin which can have meal and by products so i am not sure what to do; i had ava on the honest kitchen which is a pretty good food; but sometimes when she doesnt eat breakfast i give her baby food; and maybe that's what triggered the pancreatitis. so what should i do about the RX diet royal canin; what if she doesnt eat it; she's very picky eater. any suggestions? should i put her on royal canin for a while and then switch her back to the honest kitchen; or should i give her chicken and rice for a while instead? thanks much

| Hi Elly - I'm sorry to hear Ally hasn't been well. I would not change her diet at all - rather change THK formula you are using to one of the turkey formulas. I would also highly suggest a constulation with Susan Davis - she has great supplements that have helped lots of our babies. Pet Health Pet Nutritionist Holistic Pet Ally probably needs to have some dietary enzymes added to her diet to allow the pancreas a chance to rest. And adding a daily probiotic is always a good thing, particularly if this began as gastritis. Many of these little guys really have issues with some form of IBD and left untreated begins to manifest as pancreatitis. Good luck to both you and Ally and I hope she is feeling better very soon!

| I forgot to mention, make sure you get a formula that does not have and flax in it as this can be a pancreatitis trigger. Also, do not use any fish oil supplements.

| We feed our dog THK and it was just the opposite, he had gastrotitis was throwing up on the turkey formula but was fine with the chicken one. The vet did a battery of tests and said it was probable food allergy. He's been fine since. I'm looking up the ingredients for the THK. Preference seems to be the only formula without faxseeds and you have to add your own protein of choice. I hope Ava gets better soon.

| thanks all for ur input; i picked her u today; she seemed fine for few hrs; but now she seems lethargic. she hasn't eaten since yesterday; the vet said no food or water tonight either; she will be going back tomorrow for more iv fluids. i am afraid she will get sick tonight without any food or water. is that usually the procedure; no food or water for 36hrs? the vet says she has to be on low fat diet; something that is less than 5% fat. THK chicken and turkey are 14% min; so that's out of the question now. the vet wants to put her on royal canin digestive low fat prescription wet food for at least a week or two. i asked her if i can homecook for her; white fish and rice or potatoes and then add the supplements. what do you guys think. i am not sure if it's a good idea to keep her on RC rx food for a long time. i dont think she will eat it anyway; she's really picky. what type of supplements will i have to add to homecooked food? thanks

Yes - you can homecook for her. I can't stress enough what a consult with Susan Davis can do for you. She will advise on diet, supplements and everything else you may need to know. Very worth the consultation fee and will save you lots of $ down the line.....

| I think you have another post about this- it is very important that you speak with a nutritionist. You need to make sure the diet is balanced- i can't stress that enough. I use Susan lipozyme and probiotic- But i add this to a meal that has been formulated just for Layla. |

| just picked her up from the vet; today was her last day on IV fluids and they tried to feed her; i know she was starving; she ate a bit of the dog food they said; she's doing fine but they sent her home with 4 different meds; not sure if i should use all of them. flagyl or metronidazole, amoxil, pepcid, and carafate. should i give her all of them? i am going to try to feed her the royal canin low fat wet food; but if she doesnt eat should i feed her the tilapia and rice; is tilapia low in fat? i asked the vet and she said she doesnt know much about homemade food or the tilapia fat content.

Again, I would urge you to spend the $78 and have a consult with Susan Davis. She will give you fabulous information on creating a diet for Ally and recommend supplements that will actually help heal her rather than slapping a bandage on it.

Also- i would not start with fish- fish has oils in it naturally. If you are going to try something- you need to start with chicken breast or turkey breast- INCREDIBLY low in fat. But try the RX food- that is what she should IDEALLY be on until you get her stabilized and on a proper diet. | |

| the vet said she needs the metronidazole and amoxil to get rid of any infection just in case it's the source of the pancreatitis. the pepcid and carafate are for her stomach; because she also has gastritis. however i am skipping on the carafate. just the pepcid for a while to keep the stomach acid under control.
