| Worried about my Yorkie Hey guys. So last night I woke up at 5:00am to my Yorkie not being able to breathe. This isn't anything completely new, I've seen it happen when he gets over excited (when we come home from work, etc) but NEVER coming out of a dead sleep. Then I noticed he'd thrown up on his blankie. His tummy was making REALLY loud noises. Clearly he had an upset stomach, but that combined with him not being able to breathe has me very worried. I got up and went to the kitchen and he jumped off my huge bed just fine, and went running down the hall after me...I gave him a tiny bit of milk, hoping to soothe his tummy a bit... He slept fine after that but he's been sleeping a little more than usual today. I'm pretty concerned. I'm unemployed and don't have a ton of money, so if I don't HAVE to take him to the vet, that would be preferable, but I'll do anything it takes to ensure his health and well-being if something is wrong. Can anyone offer me some advice?? |

| When you say he can't breathe does he make any type of noise gasping for breath? |

| How old is he? What does he eat? P.S. You should try to "curb" the jumping, as "accidents" like breaking legs or luxating patella can happen in a split second |

| Yeah he does... It's like a wierd wheezing noise. Maybe more like a honking? I made a post about it on here a while ago and from what I gathered, people said that it can happen to Yorkies. I don't know if his is a little worse, and maybe he has asthma? Is that even possible in doggies? I even talked to the breeder that I got him from (a very good breeder) and they said that you can give him baby benedryl if it gets really bad, but its very sporadic and only usually lasts for a minute or so. |

It's unusual that he throws up however. There is a chest at the end of the bed for him that he normally uses to get off the bed, but he doesn't always use it.

You should try to teach him to wait for you to pick him up and put him on the floor. A broken leg or LP surgery is in the thousands....

| It sounds like a collapsed treach. Yes, Yorkies do get this. They sound like geese honking, however, it does come in different degrees. My Buddy does this from time to time and it freeks me out. Usually when he running around or getting hyper so I try and keep him calm. It usually lasts for a couple of seconds. If it lasts longer and happens frequently I would certainly have him checked by the vet. Some have been known to need surgery. If he's that small I would certainly be carefull of him jumping off of things. His little joints can't take it and in time possibly cause him trouble or even break a limp. Good luck and keep us informed. |

| Very interesting... Thanks for the info. So...is it possible that he just had an upset tummy for whatever reason, and his throwing up caused a fit due to collapsed trachea? He is eating today so that's good. I read somewhere that Yorkie's do get upset tummies from time to time?? Is that true? |

The honking noise sounds like CT, and allergies could trigger it. When he starts to honk, you MUST get him to stop. You can try these things: Rub his throat gently. Cover his nostrils. Lift his front paws up to the sky, tilting head back a little. Talk softly to him, telling him, ok, ok, calm down. Put some water on your finger and get him to lick it off. Steam up the bathroom and go in there with him and shut the door. Keep his belly cool, shave his belly, put a cold wash cloth on his belly, put him in the bath to cool him down. Best Wishes

I just shaved his belly last night actually so thats good. I'm going to print out these steps and put them on my fridge!! Would you recommend that I take him to the vet also? I was reasding that in some cases the dog gets put on steroids and that helps?

The honking happens somewhat frequently though. I'd say once a week? Usually when he's playing, or eating, or gets over-excited when we get home, etc.

The honking in a resting position is more to be worried about. If that starts to happen a lot then you can take him into the Vet. But if they remain far and few, I would bring it up to the Vet at your next visit. My Roxy did it alot when she was around 2.5 - 3 yrs old (they say allergies start around 3, that is if they are gonna start to be allergic). She is now almost 5 and really hasn't had any true episodes in quite some time now.

| Glad the baby is doing better! When Bobo was vomiting a couple of weeks ago the vet put him on special food for about a week. He told me a good substitute is a bit of plain boiled chicken and white rice in some broth. Also, milk is dairy and may upset his tummy even more. RE:the collapsed trachea. You've gotten tons of good advice already, so I won't add to that, but I wanted to let you know that when I was growing up our family yorkie had it for years and he lived a good, long life. You sound like a wonderful Mom, your furbaby is lucky to have you. |
