| Yorkie Attacked by German Shepherd My baby and I were in our garage last night and my neighbor walked over to talk. As she is talking we look up; her german shepherd pushes open her fence and runs after my Bear. She grabbed him and bit down on him, shook him, threw him and finally we pulled her off of him. I took him immediately to the vet, just some minor air pockets in his chest, bruising, shock and on watch in case of abscess. He is somewhat of a whiney baby (imagine that) so he is acting very pitiful, although I know he is sore. Now the neighbor came over late last night to check on him and tells me the german shepherd does this to her shih tzu's all the time. She apologizes, offers to pay and tells me the dog is an attack dog. Now I also own 2 attack dogs and we take the necessary prescautions to have them in an 8 foot double locked fence. She has no sign up saying beware (which is the law) etc....I am not trying to cause a situation or make it legal here but I am a little upset still. I like the neighbors they are great, but what should I do as far as keeping the distance from these people? I dont want to be rude, but I am honestly scared. We were literally in my garage when this happened. I do know Ill never take him out front again. Any suggestions please?

| First let me say I hope your baby will be ok and recovers nicely. Second, because this woman stated that her attack dog DOES THIS ALL THE TIME to her little s**tzu I would stay away from her. She has no heart and is irresponsible in my mind. I would be curtious but that's it. No further contact from me. And yes, I would expect her to pay my vet bills. |

| You should tell them you are honestly scared. There is nothing wrong to be upfront about that. If you have the chance, you should tell them that it is not right to have their Shih Tzu live in fear and attacked all the time. Since they are great people, you should really take the opportunity to tell them.

| OMG! I want to say I hope your dog will be okay. A few yrs back I had a neighbors dog jump our fence and attack my yorkie. He punctured a lung and yes I made them pay for my vet bills. Thank goodness they soon moved. I would definitely make them pay your bills. I hope this will make them take into action to find a better and safer way to contain their dog. Perhaps they need to post signs up on their fence as well. I admit it is hard to have friction with the neighbors but they definitely need to be made aware of how serious it is that their dog attacked your dog. |

| Eventually it won't be a little dog it goes after. Next time it might be a child. Or the dog of someone who'll retaliate in a not good way. I was attacked by a german shepard in our neighborhood when I was 9. It was an aggressive dog the woman kept chained in the yard beside the road where children passed all the time. She'd been warned and it was just my misfortune to be the one it got ahold of. By the time I got out of the hospitial (a week long stay, over 200 stitches and a surgery) she had moved, taking her dog with her. The new neighbors weren't as understanding and after another attack the dog was mysteriously hit by a truck. It wasn't really the dogs fault it was hers ...... |

Wow - I totally agree. I believe being calm and honest is the best way to go. I'm just wondering why they need attack dogs? And if they really are attack dogs, then they need special attention given at all times.

| Thank you all SO much for all the great advice! I am heeding to it all, especially staying away! My baby is still having problems, he has not barked one time since the accident and his personality is totally changed! He wont go into the garage, he is scared of his brother and sisters now too, they are as small as he!! We are going back to the doctor tomorrow and yes she will be paying for this, but its no consolation for putting my boy through this!! Very worried mommy here! Thank you all!

| I agree with what everybody has said . Your neighbor has a loose screw. PLease report her to animal welfare. At least save the poor little Shih Tzu's. Some people acutally use smaller dogs as bait dogs to teach bigger dogs to more aggressive and violent. This could be what is going on here. ANd my fear is that the German Shepard might be used as a fighting dog. If so there are many illeagal practices going on . YES, stay away from those people. i hope your Yorkie will be able to heal all the way and be well. I feel so sad for your little one.

| Your poor little baby. I will never understand people. How can this happen all the time to her other small dog? I am sure she just said that out of fear. I mean if this happens to her little dog all the time, the dog is probably dead, or close to it! I would simply explain to her that what happened is unacceptable, period. Whether she paid for the vet bill or not. Also you do not want that shephard freely moving in and out of the fence. |

| Lil fu fu girl - I couldnt agree with you more. Also, thanks to everyone else. We are handling it, I just dont want to say too much. It will be taken care of. As for what the woman said about the german shepherd attacking the shih tzus all the time, I believe also that she was trying to negate the situation but it only made me even more angry. My baby is OK right now, but his feelings are hurt and you can tell. He has been acting strangely since the incident and if he doesnt recover soon this will only get worse. I will not stay out of my own yard due to someone elses irresponsibility. Like I said before, there is nothing wrong with having these types of dogs for protection, however you MUST take the precautions to prevent things like this i.e. double locked gate, signs, reinforced fence etc... There is just nothing worse than an irresponsible pet owner.
