| my poor yorkie is so sick :( I know it seems the only time I ever write on here is when my dog is sick, but nobody else seems to understand unless they too are a dog owner. I had to rush my 11-year-old yorkie to the vet today. I don't live at home (about five minutes away) but I had been home this weekend and saw he had had diarrhea starting on Saturday. He had been eating/drinking okay and wasn't acting funny until today when I had talked to my mom. She had to be in Cleveland said that she was having a family friend check in on him because he wasn't eating his food, he had vomited 5-6 times last night and still had diarrhea. When I got out of class, I called the lady who was staying with him for the day and she said she had to run home to let someone in and was heading right back to my parents' house to be with him. She got there and called me and told me had to go in. He was, at that point, "acting haggard" as she put it. I called the vet as I was speeding home and they told me to bring him in right away. When he goes to the vet, usually he is all worked up and panting and shaking uncontrollably and is usually inconsolable. When I brought him in today, all he did was just lay in my arms and not care. I tried to put him down on the floor to see if he would at least walk back into the examination room with me, but he just looked up at me with the saddest eyes. Took him in to the room and was found he was dehydrated, his bowel was inflamed and his stomach was making all kinds of noises. They took him back for a while to get fluids in him and give him shots and brought him back out to me. Within a few minutes he was walking a little bit and then started getting anxious about the vet. Right now, they are treating him for gastroenteritis but took blood to run something called a "CPL" to check for pancreatitis. He didn't get into anything as I asked the lady on my way to get him and she said she looked all over and found no wrappers or any trash. My mom said she had thrown a chocolate bar in the trash in her room but in order for him to get there, the trash can would need to be knocked over, and it never was...that and the trash was taken out Sunday, so if he had somehow managed to get neatly into the can and get the candy, it's been 48 hours and he probably would've been a lot sicker. He is on a medication for vomiting, another to coat his stomach and some over-the-counter Pepcid (1/4 of a 10mlg tablet). He is also on a "bland diet" with some special soft food where he gets 1/2 a can over a period of a day for four days. He has to stop his Enalapril (heart medicine) and Previcox (arthritis medicine) and another antibiotic (he had a bladder infection not too long ago) until he is on these meds for a while, and no longer vomitting. It's so upsetting. I have never EVER seen him look so sad. He looked up at me with these huge, tired, eyes and his ears were down and back. After they gave him fluid and a shot, he moved around a little and his ears perked up (guessing it was the fluids or he somehow got onto some adrenaline kick). He can't eat anything until noon tomorrow then we start with the canned food. No hard food or table food. Has anyone ever had a dog sick like this? Or with pancreatitis? When the vet mentioned that I got worried because I always thought that that was a death sentence for dogs. Not sure why. My mom is to call the vet tomorrow to get the results from that test. She has one doctor's appointment tomorrow she can't miss (she is recovering with a broken wrist that needed a plate inserted into it...if she could miss a dr's appointment to stay with him, she said she would...but she just can't miss this one) so she asked the lady to stay with him till she got back. Nobody understands. A few do but others think I'm blowing it out of proportion...I mean I was crying when I called them and they were like "ooook..." I know everyone on here would understand just how terrifying this is for me

| Im so sorry your baby is sick. I don't have any advice because I dont know anything about pancreatitis. I just wanted to tell you I understand how upsetting it can be when your dog is sick. You are not over reacting. I hope you get good news with the test results. Keep us updated.

I am so sorry about your furbaby...Poor baby I have worked in a vet hospital and I have seen several dogs with Pancreatitis. With treatment I have seen dogs do well with it. Even older dogs. So just do some research on the web...Try to just wait and see what they vet says...and go from there. In the mean time just pamper your furbaby, give him lots of love!!! When ever peanut is sick thats what I do ( not like they are already spoiled) just give him xtra love and hugs!!! I wish you both luck I hope it is not as bad as it sounds and he gets better!! You both will be in my thoughts

| I am sooo sorry your Yorkie is so sick! It is very scary! We love our dogs so much and when they are ill it hurts Very much to see them unwell and not feeling good . I am glad you took him to the vet and he is getting treated. He has other medical issues too , I can imangine that this is extra hard on you . Suzi has been pretty sick once and I broke down and cried, right in front of the vet. She was not as sick as yours , however had the exact same symtoms. I never did find out exactly what caused it. She was treated with anti biotics and something to settle her tummy with. YT'ers understand how you feel! It is very heartbreaking, and a helpless feeling when our babies are ill! Those eyes looking at you, pleading to help them feel better! I have seen that look and it nearly killed me! you are not alone , and i do hope your boy feels better with the medication.

| You aren't blowing it out of proportion and pancreatitis can be very serious. How much does he weigh? Was a blood panel done in addition to the cPL?

| he had bloodwork a few days ago and then a couple weeks before that...first it was because he was peeing blood and it turned out to be a bladder infection...and then a few weeks later he kept drinking more water constantly so they wanted him back in to do some further bloodwork but everything came back okay except his "cushings" (some syndrome that deals with steroids or something like that) was a 17 and a high number is 20. So they said that since his blood tests results were OK a few days ago, there wasn't much more they could do except for the one for pancreatitis. Right now it's a matter of treating symptoms until those results come back sometime tomorrow

| oh and he weighs 11.4 pounds (as of today). He's a big yorkie though (not fat...just big all around...he was actually born big which was why my parents chose him when we had the choice of the litter)

| Why was Previcox chosen for pain? It should not be given to dogs under 12.5 pounds: FAQ | About Previcox | Dogs | Previcox® (firocoxib) NSAIDs aren't the safest drugs in the world and should be used carefully. Is the vet sure that the urination and drinking issues were only from infection and cushings? Did they check for stones?

| he takes 1/2 a pill of previcox a day for pain...he's had no issue for it as he has been on it for a while now. Not sure if they checked for stones. All I know is that they took blood to check for pancreatitis. He never appeared to be in any pain (no yelping when I picked him up, and no yelping when the vet felt his belly and everything)...you could just tell my poor doggie was miserable though

| Blood results came back...it is official: Tyke has a pancreatitis Has anyone ever had a dog that was sick with this? We ask the vet if he'll be ok and all she will say is that you just treat the symptoms and that it would 7-10 days. She won 't give us a direct yes or no answer and now my family is beside themselves with worry. Today: threw up in the morning but he hadn't eaten anything and sometimes if he's hungry, he does. Diarrhea this morning, too. Mom took him into the vet where he did need more fluids. However, when he pooped tonight, there was some blood, but it was solid The little blood is a good sign because my mom said before when he pooped it was nothing but dark red. Also, some guy came to deliver my mom flowers (she is getting over wrist surgery) and he was barking at the door. I brought home my yorkie (Bubba) from the apartment and he was up with his tail wagging saying hi. He still looks so tired, though. He has to go to vet again at 4pm Friday to check for dehydration one more time before the weekend. My mom might take him tomorrow...because she took him today and he needed fluids after he had gotten some yesterday. They asked if we'd like to keep him overnight, but the problem is nobody stays with them after certain hours...here at least he would always have someone around. Has anyone ever had a dog with this, and please tell me they survived and were ok because right now I don't think we can take any more bad news

| My dog has had it but it was pretty mild. The vet can't give you an answer because there is no way to be sure that everything will be okay. The right treatment protocol is very important. If he is still vomiting, he shouldn't be getting anything by mouth. He should be in the hospital on IVs. Did your vet say something about this? If he is getting over it, it may be safe to give food by mouth but the pancreas has to be rested in most cases (no food or water by mouth for at least 24 hours). I'm a bit confused why the vet prescribed Previcox when the company says very clearly that it shouldn't be used in a dog his size. What food did the vet put him on after this was diagnosed?

| I am so sorry about your baby. Pancreatis is scary. You have to be so careful with what they eat. My male schnauzer passed away from pancreatis in 2007. But, he had diabetes and was on 2 shots of insulin a day. He had the diabetes for a couple of years before he really got sick. Just be real careful about what foods he eat is the only advice I can tell you and keep a close watch on him. They usually start to throw up or at least ours did when he would go into pancreatis. Hope he feels better soon. I know its so hard. You hate to see them sick so much. |

She had to stay at our vets for 4 days and then she was fed a bland diet til her levels came back normal. The thing is Maggie never got table food. She got it from her own food. Sometimes the fat content is high in their foods and their treats and we really don't pay it much attention because we are more concerned with the ingredients. I can tell you this though after she was completely better I started paying more attention to the fat content in the food and treats. She has been pancreatitis free ever since.

| My 12 year old male yorkie who was always healthy and weighed 14lbs got really sick had blood work done and found that Chip had pancreatitis. He recovered but never was back a 100%. Then he got a bladder infection that he wasn't getting 100% better after taking an antibiotic. Had x-rays done and found he had bladder stones. Chip had surgery for the stones and the vet found an unusual thickening of the bladder wall. A biopsy was done and we found out that Chip had bladder cancer. We had to let him go 5 weeks later. He went from a healthy senior dog to very very sick dog in a matter of a few months. Everything just seemed to happen so fast.
