| cough in puppy that won't go away My 12 week old yorkie has a cough that will not go away. I took her to the vet and they said it was an upper respiratory infection. They put her on amoxillin and children's cough syrup. She only has one dose left on her medicine, and she is not any better; in fact, she may actually be worse. She did seem to get better at first, but last night she coughed all night long. I called the vet and they said not to bring her back in until she had completely finished her meds. I am really worried. Is this normal? It seems like it should be getting better by now. She is eating fine, and playing lilke normal, but no one is getting much sleep around here. Please tell me this is normal,, and I am worrying entirely too much. |

| The meds are almost gone and she till is not doing better... Yes, I would be worried too. This is A young puppy. If she is not showing any other signs of illness , I am wondering if it is kennel cough. Or the meds just were not the right kind to have worked. Definately take her back ! I would not want her to get any sicker . Something is going on , and that needs to be addressed .

| If it is kennel cough it can take a while to get rid of and meds dont help it go away they just keep the dog from getting pneumonia

| They specifically told me that it was not kennel cough, it was an upper respiratory infection. Are those too things similar enough that they could have gotten the wrong diagnosis? |

| Yes they are. It is just like a cold for humans and just takes time for it to work out of their systems

| Upper respiratory 'crud' My 18 week old yorkie also had an upper respiratory infection/crud at 12 weeks. I took her to an emergency vet (Sat- she started coughing on a Fri night) who gave her amoxillen and cough syrup. The following Monday I took her to my vet who said that he would have given a different antibiotic-- but since she was already on it, he didn't change it but did add a steroid (prednisone?). It took about 10 days, but she did get well. The steroid helped quite a bit--- G. |

| If you're not seeing any improvement I'd call you vet.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | When I got Cali she had kennel cough (URI) and gave it to my older pom. It took 3 months to get rid of it in both of them.

| It might not be kennel cough! If its not getting better, have the vet do chest xrays, could be a heart condition. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | As others have said, it can weeks and months to get rid of kennel cough. Did the vet give a vaccine called Bordatella? If so, that *is* kennel cough and the vaccine can actually result in kennel cough itself. The biggest concern is whether this is progressing to pneumonia. If it seems to be worsening, you might want to go back in so they can listen to the lungs.

| You can give them something cold for coughs, it tends to help quite a bit. They do make ice cream for doggies, or little pieces of ice, etc. My old vet used to say a little whiskey and I think it was honey also, but, not sure on how much, he swore by that |

| IMO it sounds like kennel cough but I'm definitely no vet lol. Ask your vet about it especially if it seems like your little one isn't getting better with the meds. I hope she gets better soon! |

YT 1000 Club Member | I went through this with Roxie when we first got her. It took forever for the cough to leave. She had it so bad I think it scarred her vocal chords because to this day her bark sounds like a squeak or like her voice is horse. Have you tried running a hot steamy shower and just sitting on the bathroom floor with her letting her breath the steam? Also with your index and middle fingers tap her sides gently but firmly around her ribcage about where her lungs are. Do one side a few times then the other and do that several times a day. It helps loosen anything up that might be in there. If you have a hot steam vaporizor you could run that too. Keep in touch with your vet to keep them informed. Hope it goes away soon I know how frustrating it can be. |
