| Yorkie Attacked: It was awful, but he survived I took my Yorkie to a dog event in the park yesterday. At the end of the event he wandered away from me which I didn't notice to where some large dogs were sitting. My Maxwell was on a leash which is required here in KY, but am not sure about her dog(s). While he wandered while on a leash, a huge dog started attaching him and it looked like he was or did try to bit him. I was in shock and didn't know what to do I pulled on the leash trying to get him away and somehow I did get him away. I am still in shock over this whole ordeal It was difficult to get him away from the large dog too. Everyone gathered around me, even the owner of the dog, which she called a "rot". After I got him away from the "rot", the owner of the "rot" held Maxwell so tightly and kept apologizing saying, "he was playing". It didn't look like, but I was in shock and agreed that everything was okay. They had a Vet there to look at him, and she said, "he was okay", but it sure look like he took some bite or hair of the little fella After I got him back, he wouldn't move from my arms. Usually he climbs onto my shoulder. I got him some cold bottled water and he wouldn't drink, so I was really worried. Then someone came up to me from "Paws" (organization that does pet therapy for humans) told me that "the dog wasn't playing" and my little Maxwell was in shock. He wouldn't move too much after this whole ordeal and his ears were back and tail was down. She said "that is a sign of stress" for a dog. I should check his pupils later. He doesn't like the light in his eyes, so that is difficult to do. Even tho the Vet there checked him for bleeding and how he moved around on the ground, he checked out okay. Shouldn't I still take him to my Vet to see if he's okay~? He is running around normal, and peeing normal (lifting the right leg up). But he won't lift the left leg up to pee. I think he favors his right side more than his left anyways. Any suggustions are appreciated. |

| How scarey for you and especially for your little guy. I'm glad he's ok. I agree with Jeri, he's probably just sore. Just keep a close eye on him. I hope, if he is terrified of other dogs now, the fear goes away soon. He's a lucky little guy.

| See if the vet will give you some pain killers... wait make him. Mine got slammed by a big dog once and was stiff for a few days. The meds made it easier on to move and on me too. Ok how are you? have you taken a moment to have a good long cry yet.. if not do so let it out. It is very scary for these thing to happen and in time you will move on. Notice I did not say get over it. You have to let go of the guilt you will pack and yes you do have it even if it deep and your not showing it now.... you did not a thing wrong worth being guilty over. So you know it took me a long time to get over the would have, coUld have, should have, after mine was nailed on leash with me right there hold the leash and well it took time. It happened fast and no matter how you relive it in your head not a thing you could have done once it got going to get it stopped. Second get back out there walking as soon and you can in quiet places to build you confidence up and your little ones...oh and yes it is ok to carry a cane without cause you want to beat the stuffing out of the next dog that comes at yours. That is a normal feeling. Just do not do it. I carried a bear banger with me for a long time... sounds like a gun going off when you fire it never had to use it but it made me feel better. Hugs to both of you and hang in and take it one day at a time... Oh did I say this is not your fault. JL

| you are living my nightmare!! Keep a close eye on Maxwell. It sounds like there is a good chance everything will be fine. I know that dog parks are good for socialization, but I cannot bring myself to go to them for this very reason. Also, I am a little nervous about illnesses, even though my dogs are vaccinated for just about everything. If I had larger dogs, I would probably be a regular at the dog parks. Oh, I agree with the poster above--this is NOT your fault. Last edited by alisonJ; 09-21-2008 at 08:57 AM. Reason: incomplete |

| What a close call. I would have gotten her phone # and name and taken my dog to a Vet. for a good check. You just never know. This happen to my Azrael once when walking right here in my own neighborhood. A very mean JR attacked her by her throat. She was wearing a rolled leather collar and a vest harness which helped save her neck. She did cough some but was ok. It didn't make her afraid of dogs thank goodness.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | How scary!!! SO glad he is okay! From what you're describing, it sounds like he's sore, tired, but probably okay. What a godsend that a vet was there to look him over! During a fight/attack like that - you can imagine that adrenaline was flying through his little body and that every muscle was tight/prepped in his body, so this would place his entire body under stress and also easily cause a muscle pull/strain during the fight - so soreness would be quite normal. Plus, if the dog's teeth caused any brusing, that would hurt too. So, maybe keep a close eye on him and bring him in to the vet if he seems to increasingly favor a limb. And, of course - just give him some of that extra-good Mama lovin'.

| I am glad Max is ok ... This is very upsettinig. I would keep A very close eye on him and watch for any signs that he is hurt worse . If he yelps when you pick him up, or having A hard time walking, take him to your vet just to make sure.

Now I don't feel paraniod about snatching my girls up when I see other dogs on our walks ...I normally wouldn't think a JR would do that... but it shows that these little guys can be attacked by pretty much any breed ... What a great collar and vest ! You must have freaked and I'm so glad she was wearing her body armor | |
