| Leg Perthesis Has anyone had to deal with this? The whole procedure sounds painful. Having to cut off the head of the bone. /cringe They'd better make sure it's necessary!! What's the recovery time like? What are the do's and don'ts for recovery? The big question, how much should it cost? Not that it matters. It's gonna get done if it turns out he needs it. TIA /hugs

| My smallest little girl had the surgery when she was 7 mos. old. She is 1-1/2 now. She did just fine with it. She had pain meds for a few days and of course slept a little more. They wanted her to start walking on it right away, so no cast or anything. I just had to keep her from jumping and running - but that was not even a problem for us. I had a specialist do the surgery and I think it cost around $1200 total. I hope things go well for you. |

| So sorry to hear this, it is a degenerative disease so if he is limping then he is in pain and it will only get worse without correction. I would definitely get the surgery. Good luck and hoping for a speedy recovery. |

| Thanks for the replies. I've gone ahead and gotten a few referals for the surgery. I also picked up the xrays so I can take them with me. A friend is checking into her vet for us. Hopefully we can get this done soon and it ends up solving his problem. /crosses fingers I wasn't sure if there'd be a cast. Thanks for the info. Unfort. for us, the jumping this is a problem. /sigh guess we'll have to break out the ol' x-pen again. Thanks again for the info and thoughts. /hugs

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | the surgery that your baby needs is called a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO). The surgeons i work for do this surgery quite often. It sounds more painful then it really is. They recovery quickly. The recovery time is actually less then a knee surgery. There is no cast because you can't cast a hip, the incision is too high up. Legg Perthese disease is quite painful if nothing is done about it. the bone just deteriorates and there is alot of grinding going on between the femur and the pelvis.

| Sorry to hear Brody is having pain with this. My Tinkerbelle has the same disease and had a FHO 1 1/2 yrs ago now. You'd never know there was anything done because her gait was normal and she could run like crazy. Just had to keep her from jumping which as you've already stated will be a challenge. If you got your baby from a breeder please let them know because Brodies siblings could have this also and they certainly won't want to breed the parents again. Good luck little Brody! |

| I know several dogs that have had an FHO and they've all done quite well.... The recovery is usually a lot easier than dealing with the painful disease the rest of his life. |

| Did you get a health guarantee with Brody? Legg Perthes is genetic in Yorkies so your breeder should be responsible for at least some of the cost of the surgery. |

| It's starting to sound like the surgery sounds more scary than it actually is. That's good to know. I have to call for an appointment at the Hope Center for my referal appointment. Then we'll get a definiate answer to all this. Thanks again for all the info. I sure does make me feel better to know it's not the end of the world for lil' Brody. /hugs
