| Scooter has patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) Update on Scooter: He saw the cardiologist and had an echo today. It turns out that his "murmur" is actually a PDA. The good news is that he has no other heart disease at this time (no congestive heart failure) and should do well with a surgical repair. He is too little to have the surgery where they insert a coil into the hole to plug it, so he will have to have the open heart surgery instead. We are starting him on a low-dose of lasix (diuretic) to help decrease any fluid load on his heart. OK, that's gonna really help in potty training And we need to keep his activity level down, so we had to take away his water bottle because he will chase it around for long periods. The cardiologist has faxed in a referral to a surgeon who deals mostly with the heart. I will call him tomorrow and see about setting up the surgery as soon as possible. I will keep all update on this thread. Thank you to tghose who have sent Scooter and me prayers and good thoughts. You all are the best!!! If anybody has experience with PDA repair or if they know of anyone, could you please PM me. TIA

| Thank you all so much for your kind words. His heart surgery is scheduled for either April 27 or 28. That Monday we meet with the surgeon and then they will do all bloodwork and a radiograph to determine exactly how big his heart is and to better locate exactly where the PDA is. He should stay there for 1-2 nights post-op.. I know he won't live long without this surgery but it breaks MY heart to know he has to go through all of this. One good thing: the breeder is refunding the full cost of Scooter towards the female that we will be getting soon. And if he doesn't make it through this she will also replace him for us (even though he is not replaceable in our heart). He is the best little man ever. Thanks again for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. Now I'm on my way to work to deal with human hearts. Have a great weekend.

| I just saw your thread. I'm sorry about little Scooter but glad there is something they can do to help him. Best wishes with the future surgery and I hope he will behave himself until the drs. can get him fixed. Thot's for you too during this stressful time. Be kind to yourself. |

| Wow, I've never heard of a dog having open heart surgery. I hope things go well for you and Scooter. That sounds pretty stressful to me. At least your breeder will stand behind her dogs. That is one good thing - even though it wouldn't "replace" Scooter. My breeder would not make good on her health guarantee - Sure glad yours is more ethical. | Thank you all so much for your kind words and prayers. You have really touched my heart. YT people are the best!!!! Omega~I must stand corrected. I'm sorry. It isn't actually "open heart" surgery. They do cut into the chest and tie/clamp off the open connection between the aorta and the pulmonary artery at the top of the heart but they don't cut into the heart.
