I am undecided.
I have a 3 1/2 lb female bred to a 2 1/2 lb male.
She is due in less then two weeks. She seems happy and content.
If it was cruel I will let you know.

Thank you for posting about your experience with your little one so we can all learn. Is this her first litter? Did you have her checked by a reproductive specialist before you bred her? What is her bady shape like? Is the compact and wide or long and narrow? Why did you decide to breed her? Has the stud had other litters? Were all the pups small?

Sorry so many questions, but I am really curious because so many seem to be so against it but I know so many breeders who do it with no problems and the females are wonderful mothers with no adverse consequences.

I would guess it comes down to making sure the female is healthy and not weak or compromised in some other manner no matter what her size.

I do not think that anyone would breed a health compromised female regardless of her weight. There are plenty or perfectly healthy 3 and 4 lb females who have never had a health issue their entire lives. I think these are the dogs we are discussing.

There are certainly SOME tinies who are not healthy but "smaller yorkies" do not all have more health issues as you assert. Most live long happy healthy lives from birth.

Personally I would never breed a 3 lb. female.. I perfer my females to be 5 lbs or more if I decide to breed them.. I have had 5-6 lb females that their pelvics were not large enough to whelp all the puppies, think how small the pelvic opening is on a 3 lb. yorkie.. I worry about my 6 lb. girls whelping, I would drive myself insane waiting for a 3 lb female to whelp! JMO..

First of all I really hope that everything ends up okay with the mother and her puppies. But can I ask why you decided to go against the norm? Many breeders say that is too small and it is very risky for her. I am also wondering how you would be able to cope with yourself if anything did happen to her? Again, I hope she does have a healthy pregnancy.

well..it just goes to show how dumb ppl are and im sorry but if anybody justifies that or breeding a female under 3 pounds . YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR DOGS TAKEN AWAY!!!!!!!!! You obviously dont care about what can happen to her....and for the person that bred there 3 pound female to a 8 pound male ......Need to get some smarts up there in the head instead of air!!!

From what the reproductive specialists say, a good body shape for e breeding female is wide and compact not long and narrow. It makes sense if you think about it. The wider the hips the easier it is for the pups to get throught the birth canal.

At this point in time I also feel it is too great a risk to any female to breed it (I respect the opinion of those who think otherwise of course) and I have no intention of breeding any of mine even if they get to 6 or 7 lbs.

I am not offering this bit of internet info for any reason other than information for those who may think it is not scientifically possible for a small dog to be bred to a larger dog and have healthy puppies.

I AM NOT SAYING BY POSTING THIS THAT I THINK IT IS OKAY TO BREED SMALLER FEMALES AT ALL SO PLEASE DO NOT THINK THAT.

Dogs are plenty driven by urges to breed or be bred regardless of their mismatched sizes so artificial insemination might not even be necessary."

Once the female is pregnant, the puppies will grow to the size available to them, so even though it seems counterintuitive, a small female dog can carry pups from a giant breed male dog. Even where there is no size mismatch, says Kustritz, if a female dog has only one pup, it will grow to fill the space, thus becoming larger and more likely to cause dystocia (difficulty whelping) than would pups from a large litter.

I think that when some people say breeding a 3 lb or under female is cruel, they dont always mean that the puppies are unhealthy. For me, I think that breeding a small mother like that is very cruel because there are sooo many more risks for her and the puppies. The puppies can be too big and become squished inside of her because she is so small. She might have trouble actually giving birth without a C-section if the puppies are bigger than expected. There are many more risks also. As I said before, IMO breeding a female that is 3 lb or under is animal cruelty. JMHO
