| ? about Nascar & Redneck?? I don't understand? Okay, this is VERY Off-Topic, but I am curious! How is it and why, do people associate Nascar (or any other auto sport) to be considered a Redneck sport? Here's the deal: My husband received a free trip to a Nascar race (everything paid). We had never been to one (and definitely wouldn't have spent that kind of money on going - very expensive) so we thought why not! Well, as we mentioned this to several people, they would joke that we were rednecks or going to watch a redneck sport....What???!! I don't understand. Even one of my daughters friends father said to her...."so, you're into those redneck sports??" I couldn't believe it! Course, she said, "Mom, he spends all day on the couch watching golf or golf videos" - okay, we are not golf fans and know there are people not racing fans either - to each his own, right. Okay, the trip was fun, lots to see at a race (wow, really amazed at what all there is to do at a race and how big it is), but we will probably not go to another - I found that I didn't like sitting there for several hours w/ nothing too exciting happening (plus, it was alittle too expensive for me, just that I could have found tons of other things to spend money on). Luckily, it was a free trip and something that you might only do once in your life. It seems to be better to watch on tv on your comfy couch - and even then, I couldn't sit through the whole thing....caught the beginning and ending. Okay, drifting off topic here! The crowd was a diverse group of people - I didn't see anyone that I would call Rednecks - there were several rowdy college age boys, some with beer hats on, but in general most looked like the normal every day person and several were even very upperclass and business like. Of course, there were TONS cheering for their favorite driver - hey, that is what you do with any sport. I just don't get it.........do people realize that it takes a lot of time and money to attend one of these things and how many people from all over (different backgrounds, etc) come to these things? I know that the racing teams have lots of money and put lots of money and hard work into their cars, teams, etc. The owners are all pretty much multi-millionaires and to most this just isn't a job, it is their passion and hobby. The crews and drivers have to be well trained, physically fit and well educated at what they do - just like any other sport. Would this mean that my dad is a "Redneck" too?? My dad and some buddies finished their college/votech learning and started their own restoration company (restoring old cars) and soon starting building and selling race cars and drag cars. This wasn't because they were rednecks, just that there was a growing interest/demand for them and then it soon became a hobby - with many of them (including my dad) racing on dirt tracks and on drag strips in the area. Now, these were young, well educated, respectable men (all from good families, good upbringing, well dressed, well mannered, etc). They no longer race (age thing, I guess, hee, hee), but some still own their old cars that someone else races now AND many of them are still involved with classic cars and like to watch an occassional race. But then again, when my dad and several business buddies got into Harley's, they were all considered "rough" and in a motorcycle gang! Yeah, I can see my dad and his buddies with their graying hair and polite manners causing trouble on their "bikes". Again, I don't think people realize that we all have different hobbies and that these are really expensive hobbies! Not to say there isn't any rough biker gangs out there, but still...........these guys were older business men that spent lots of time and money on something they loved. Why do we judge??? I just truly do not understand where and why a car race is considered a redneck sport? Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks for allowing me to ramble on...........

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Because years ago, it was not all corporate sponsors and such. It was "good ol' boys who built the cars one piece at a time, if an engine blew, then they were out of the race cause there wasn't any back up engine. Rickie Rudd was the last owner/driver on the circuit. He was respected by fans just for that fact.....those days are long gone. Multiple owners owning multiple cars....aint' just for good old farm boys any more. PS. Personally Dale Earnhardt Jr sounds like he didn't complete 8th grade, though by the time he was born, dad could've gotten him an entire private education....obviously Jr. had dad's money and didn't need it.

| with the risk of being eaten alive, I'll be honest... Yes, I consider it a "redneck" sport, though I the word "redneck" is not in my vocabulary. I know no one in Chicago who watches Nascar. Seriously. I don't believe that it is popular in any urban area. I am not exposed to it at all. I don't understand why men would put their lives on the line racing cars for other people's entertainment. Seems a little stupid to me. Same goes for pro boxing - not my style. oh and hunting, too. Sickening. edited to say that I mean no offense - just giving my honest evaluation of the sport.

| Again, sticking my neck out there, but if it's really expensive to go to the race, there probably wouldn't be many so-called rednecks there as I would imagine that they wouldn't have the money or means to travel there and attend. Oh, and I guess I'll also add that I've been to a race. I was doing marketing there for a company I used to work for. Anyway, I coudln't stand the buzzing cars and I couldn't wear the ear plugs since I had to meet with our clients! |

Btw, my brother sells Hoosier racing tires....every customer I've ever spoken with has said...."I need to get sum ty-ires". No kidding pronounced just that way. A set of four ty-ires cost you around $500.00 a WEEK. Next week you need another set. Yep, they may be a redneck but they've got money....or a charge card at least at local tracks

| I have always considered Nascar a "redneck" sport and I have an uncle who is obssessed with it! He has 2 rooms dedicated to all things NASCAR, a memorabilia collection that spans years and a ton of money invested in this stuff! He holds season tickets to Bristol Raceway (in TN) and goes to Daytona every year. While I was staying with them 2 summers ago he took me with him to the Bristol speedway for the Sharpie 500 and I have to tell you, I had the best time! We stayed in the bazillion dollar motor home, tail-gated in the parking lot and I LOVED it! It has grown so much and he explained the history to me and the growing industry, etc. There is such a stigma and stereotype surrounding it as a "sport" and I question it as well, but I have yet to meet a crowd that large full of NICE people! |

| NASCAR evolved from the South, and there was a negative association with it, as in people from the south (who they stereotyped as 'rednecks') were big-time fans. Now, NASCAR is a billion dollar industry and there's big money to be made everywhere. There are big races in lots of major cities now, like Chicago and Las Vegas, and it's quite popular everywhere. I would guess more fans are 'blue-collar', not that there is anything bad with it. I think the term 'redneck racing' just comes from NASCAR's roots, which I think has a negative connotation and still lingers to this day. That said, I'm not much of a fan of NASCAR, I'd much rather watch Formula 1, where they actually do something besides turn left. |

1. Chicago doesn't even have a racetrack and will never have one, so there is no way that we can have races. 2. blue collar and redneck, to me, are NOT the same. No where near the same. Rednecks don't have jobs; they're on welfare. Blue collars are union workers or other factory workers aka "working class" or "lower middle class".

| I think we all disagree on what a redneck is, so there's no way to figure out if/why Nascar is considered a "redneck" sport.

| This is from Urban Dictionary Mildly offensive term for a lower class white person from the southeastern states of the USA. Derives from someone who spent a lot of time on manual labour outside and so received a "red neck" from the sun. & You would be a redneck if: You need one more hole punched in your card to get a freebie at the House of Tattoos. You need an estimate from your barber before you get a haircut. The biggest fashion risk you take is which plaid you'll wear to the 4-H Fair. You have flowers planted in a bathroom appliance in your front yard. Your wife weighs more then your refrigerator. You move your refrigerator and the grass underneath it has turned yellow. You mow your lawn and find a car. You can spit without opening your mouth. Going to the bathroom in the middle of the night involves putting on shoes and a jacket and grabbing a flashlight. You go Christmas shopping for your mom, sister, and girlfriend, and you only need to buy one gift. Taking a dip has nothing to do with water. There are more than ten lawsuits currently pending against your dog. You take a fishing pole to Sea World. The hood and one door are a different color from the rest of your car. You've ever filled your deer tag on the golf course. You've ever shot somebody over a mall parking space. Santa Claus refuses to let your kids sit in his lap. Your toilet paper has page numbers on it. You think mud rasslin' should be an Olympic sport. The receptionist checks the rat traps at your place of business. More than one living relative is named after a Southern Civil War general. You think the stock market has a fence around it. You think the O.J. trial was the big Sunkist and Minutemaid taste test. You've ever lost a loved one to kudzu. Your boat has not left the driveway in 15 years. Your front porch collapses and kills more than three dogs. Your coffee table used to be a telephone cable spool. You keep a can of Raid on the kitchen table. You've ever used a toilet seat as a picture frame. Your home has more miles on it than your car. Your Christmas tree is still up in February. You've ever been arrested for loitering. You think that potted meat on a saltine is an hors d'ouvre. There is a stuffed possum anywhere in your house. You hammer bottle caps into the frame of your front door to make it look nice. You've ever shot anyone for looking at you. You own a homemade fur coat. Your wife can climb a tree faster than your cat. Your momma has "ammo" on her Christmas list. You've totaled every car you've ever owned. |
