| Am I wrong? I need feedback asap! I am in NJ right now helping my boyfriend move from his other apartment. Anyway.. his roommate over here has a Lhasa Apso. Very sweet boy. But I am not sure if she takes care of him as much.. Then at the same time, I do a little bit more than others when I dog sit. Anyway.. let me start.. So.. I guess the owner leaves the house over 12 hrs a day evey day. She doesn't seem to be here on the weekend. Her roommate is usually out for 10 hours during the day and usually plays with the dog. Anyway I should get to the point. When nobody is in the apartment, they put him in a small kennel, crate.. I just came back from lunch and he was in this tiny crate and his drool was all over the floor. I felt so bad!! I know people do crate training..... I need to learn more about that. I just feel that it is really tiny space.. and I will never put him in the small place. Maybe if it were larger.. and if she can walk around.. but not like the one that he might just be cable to turn around.. without bed.. Hmm.. maybe.. this is normal.. I just felt bad to the dog.. I was gonna head to city.. but might wait for someone else to come home. Let me know.. what you guys think!! Do you leave your dog in the crate ?

YT 5000 Club Member | Well, I use to leave Gidget in her crate all night when trying to get her potty trained!!! I would let her out when I got up to go to the bathroom and then put her back in! But in my opinion if you think there is something the dog could hurt itself with I would probably leave it in a crate till the owner came home!

| Exactly how long is he in his crate during a 24 hour period? Also how long is he in his crate for one stretch? |

| I think she needs to get a bigger crate. I know some people have to leave their babies so they can work. But they need space to play. I would take her out and play with her till someone comes home. Give her some YT loving!

| Hmmmm.. maybe I am just over reacting.. He is in there when nobody is at home. So during the week.. it is like 10 hours. Maybe it is normal.. I am glad to hear from others... I just feel like jail.. but then at the same time.. I guess dog could damage the house.. I just have never seen anyone put the dog in crate for long time..so I just got surprised...

| I think it is terrible - leaving a dog in a crate that much of the time. I have even heard of little animals that have not developed properly because they were confined tp such small spaces for so much of the time. I think it is abuse. You mentioned the dog's being crated from 10 to 12 hours and no one there sometimes over the weekend. Again, I think this is abuse. I attempted crate training my first puppy, but had him out a lot of the time. The only time he was in the crate was when I couldn't be right there to watch him or if I was gone. Then, I quickly felt guilty leaving him home alone in a crate, so I bought a puppy gate and left him in a large kitchen with a bed, toys, and a pad. And, with neighbors who came over to visit and even occasionally taking him to their houses to play. I am not a big fan of crate training if puppies end up spending most of their time in a crate. I don't think it's healthy - physically or emotionally. Look at all the energy that puppies and even some grown dogs have. They need to stretch their legs and play and interact with people and other pets. This is how they develop and grow. I don't think a person should have a dog, if what you described is the way it is going to live. I certainly share your concern over this dog's care. It will be interesting to see what others think. | Thank you, Carol. I am glad that someone agrees with me. I am leaving today and of course, the owner has left for a day already. So I might write her a note. Good thing is that one of the roommates seems to be home most of the time during the weekend so that the dog doesn't have to be in the crate. I have a couple more concerns, and I hate to leave him. He is adorable and affectionate. He has been following me around and playing with me. I haven't taken him out because I didn't even get to ask the owner if it is okay since she is never home. But I ran around and played with him in the apartment.. pretty big living room. He is having a blast! He chooses to stay with me at night too instead of going to the owner... The owner is very nice, but she needs to give this dog much more attention than she does.

| This is just my opinion, I am a stay at home mom, when I have to leave for 15 min up to a few hrs, I have all my dogs in their crates, but they have plenty of room in there. I was thinking of getting a job, where I would have to leave my dogs alone for longer periods, up to 4 hrs at a time.... I would then put up their xpen, with food, water, and pee pad and plenty of toys. I do know that dogs generally sleep when their owners are gone, but for 10hrs I am not so sure. I don't think it is healthy for them, to be left crated for 10 hrs, but that is just my opinion, and it isnt' something i would do personally. |

| Other thing is.. I don't think she leaves him water and food in crate.. because it is kinda small... I have a lot of questions to her. I think if the crate was big and comfortable, safe place for pup.. I wouldn't have been this concerned!

| Dogs definitely sleep while their owners are gone. My dogs even come to the door when I get home -- still yawning -- I can tell they are just waking up. Also I have two neighbors that drop in on my new puppy (at least once a day) and they said that most of the time, he is sound asleep in his bed. He doesn't even hear them when they first come in. Also - think about it. What else can a dog do when they are home alone? They have to be bored I'm sure they sleep a lot. MIne do even when I'm home. Carol Jean |

| IMO, that is way too long to leave a puppy/dog in a small crate. And, without food or water. To me, that borders on neglect...I have no idea about that dog's size but IMO the crate should be at least 3-4 times larger than he is. I prefer an Xpen too, but some dogs are climbers. Maybe your friend does not know dogs are social and inquisitive creatures who need room to move around in if left alone for that long..they need stimulation and exercise... Maybe she needs to be educated about the care of a companion animal....I hope she re-considers the care of her baby.. |

| Before I left, I left a note, but I ended up talking with her about her dog. She recently moved to this new apartment a few months ago. She says that she used to leave him in the apartment not in crate. Then when she moved to the new place, the dog started scratching a lot of places and damaging the property. So she asked her vet for some ideas, so that is what he suggested her. She listened to my concerns and going to consider some of my suggestions. x pen is something that I suggested and some food and water. Some comfortable bed to sleep on. She saw me playing with the dog.. and she thought I worked with dogs for living.... I hope the dog is going to be treated better soon.

| This is so sad...I know that when you are training it is ok...but for 12 hours or more...that to me is wrong...especially when it is too small.....how sad!
