Dogs definitely sleep while their owners are gone. My dogs even come to the door when I get home -- still yawning -- I can tell they are just waking up.
Also I have two neighbors that drop in on my new puppy (at least once a day) and they said that most of the time, he is sound asleep in his bed. He doesn't even hear them when they first come in.
Also - think about it. What else can a dog do when they are home alone? They have to be bored I'm sure they sleep a lot. MIne do even when I'm home.
