| Kids and Dentists.... We just moved to Florida and are in the process of getting the kids Dr's and dentists taken care of--my question is, how many of you took/take your kids to a dentist where you can't go back with them?? They've been going to the dentist since they were about 3, but I've never been to one where they say you can't go back with them. My daughter is 6 and can be apprehensive, she has had no cavities or anything, my son--he has a mouth of cavities(all are fixed), but he still has no idea that they put a needle to numb it, lol. I am being an over protective Mommy?? |

| Absolutly not. Find a new dentist if they won't let you go back. I would never let them go in by themselves. You are not being overprotective one bit.

| I was a bit surprised when I took my oldest to her first dentist appt. when she was 2 or 3. It's a pediatric dentist and no, they do not let the parents go back with them. I know they will if they absolutely can't get the kid to cooperate but believe me, the ONE time I went back - to make sure they were able to give her the "sleepy juice" when she was getting several crowns put on - it was a nightmare. I really think she acted up more with me there. They have admitted to me that they were a bit nervous going back by themselves at first but that the ladies that work there are just awesome about making them feel comfy and not scared. Mine are now 15 and 13 years old and have no dentist fears. They were even shocked when a couple years ago I told them that the dentist gives them a shot to numb their mouth. He was so good at distracting them, that they never noticed. Honestly, if you trust the dentist, I don't see any reason to refuse to see this dentist just because of this preference of their's. But of course, it's your choice.

| My kids dentist told them if they did not behave he would make me leave the room. They didn't want that so they were fine in there. I said it before and I say it again I would never let them go in alone. Call me overprotective that's ok but these are my kids. I wouldn't let them get a shot without me being there. Especially at 2,3, or 4 years old. I wouldn't let them see any doctor by themselves. It's funny because my 19 almost 20 year old son wasn't feeling well yesterday. It has been so humid here and his asthma has been acting up anyway he wouldn't go to the doctor without me. I had to get dressed and go with him. too funny they still need me

| Well, I decided to go with the pediatric dentist--they will let me go back for the first visit and then after that, they go back alone. The receptionist made me feel alot better at this place then the other places I called, if the kids fight going back and/or complain alot--we will go elsewhere. Thanks for the feedback. |

| Yes, they let us go back the first time also - mostly just to introduce themselves and let us look around. After the dentist is through with a child, they send them to the playroom where they have stuff for all ages to play with - small kid toys, video games, the works - and then they call the parent into a conference room where they show you x-rays and talk about everything they've done or need to do. It's a lot easier to concentrate on what they are telling you when you don't have a kid hanging on you. Seriously, if you trust your dentist, it's not a bad deal. I mean really, we all know how most kids act up more with a parent around. Just ask any day care worker.... a crying kid is usually just fine as soon as the parent leaves. We are in a smaller town and pretty much everyone knows everyone. That makes a bit of a difference also. Good luck with your dentist! Wanted to say also.... I'm glad you went with a pediatric dentist. That was the best decision we made too. Our's is also an orthodontist so he was able to do a lot of "prep work" in their early years that led up to getting into braces easily.

| I am just a little to old now to go to the pediatric dentist, but the one that I went to didnt allow the parents to go back until the end. But really when me and my sister were back there we were to busy with the toys and video games to worry about where our mom was. Up until I was like 17 and my mom told me...I never knew I was being given a shot to numb my mouth, I always thought it was just the gel they rubed on my gums. We had a great Dentist!!!! But now I expect the shot with the "grown Up" dentists!

| It seems to be the usual practice of pediatric dentists to not allow the parents into the back. Most kids are MORE anxious with their parents there. I was hesitant about it with my daughter, at first, but it really worked at her dentist's practice. The kids all came out smiling, even those that had major work done. It's also good in that the kids don't associate any pain with their parents, enabling the comfort they get from Mom and Dad to be much more effective. We had a great pediatrician that would have a nurse hold our infant daughter while she got shots, and she explained to me WHY they did it that way. Plus the kids/babies feed off of our anxiety, making their pain level that much higher.
