It seems to be the usual practice of pediatric dentists to not allow the parents into the back. Most kids are MORE anxious with their parents there. I was hesitant about it with my daughter, at first, but it really worked at her dentist's practice. The kids all came out smiling, even those that had major work done.

It's also good in that the kids don't associate any pain with their parents, enabling the comfort they get from Mom and Dad to be much more effective. We had a great pediatrician that would have a nurse hold our infant daughter while she got shots, and she explained to me WHY they did it that way. Plus the kids/babies feed off of our anxiety, making their pain level that much higher.
