| I live in a predominately Caucasian community. We moved here 3 years ago and it was strange to have only one race around. I'd say Effingham is 99.8% Caucasian. The kids I taught here one year were soooooo prejudiced! I was teaching them Current Events. Hopefully after having me as a teacher, they are more broadminded about people's differences. Local government is of course, all white due to the population here.

| Brandi, Here are my repsonses.. i did the best as I could as i really don't follow my local news, politics, etc.. I hope i helped.. Good luck with your paper and let us know how you do. 1. Are there large amount of minority groups in your local community? YES 2. Do you feel there are problems with stereotyping, discrimination and racism that affect the community in which you live? No... My town is very diverse and it seems that there really isn't too much discrimination and racism (i mean I am sure there is some but none to my knowledge) 3. Do you feel that minority group interest such as politics, jobs and healthcare are represented fairly in your community? I honestly can't answer this question due to my lack of knowledge 4. Are there issues relative to gender in your community? Not that I am aware of.. I have noticed lately, there seems to be alot of business owners in my town who are female! 5. Do you feel women are treated as equally as men in your community? Yes... As i stated in the previous question.. We also have women town counselors, etc 6. Does the local media represent people like you, and the prominent minority groups? (Do they look like you?) Not sure I follow this question.. The stories in our papers always seem to talk about anything that is going around in town whether its minority groups, majority groups, etc 7. How do leaders in your community treat people like you? How do they treat others? Is there and apparent lack of interest from one group to the next? Once again, I think its pretty fair but i am not familiar with things like that.. i know they have cheaper camps for minority kids during the summer (in fact I used to work at one) 8. How does the community treat you, or people of your race and gender? How do they treat others of different race and or gender? Seems to be fair and equal although i am sure there are issues i am not awesome of 9. If you could solve any inequities in your community, what would you change, how and why wow, this is a tough question... i need to think about this one for a while and i'll get back to you Overall, I have been so lucky to have grown up in my town because of how diverse it is... There are towns in the surrounding areas that have NO minority population or very few.. It has done wonders for me and made into the person i am today

| Brandi, it sounds like you are doing some very interesting research and I would love to help you. But first I must say that in no way am I trying to be controversial by answering this thread, I am merely speaking of my personal experiences in my community. Also, I apologize up front in case someone is offended by my responses because that is certainly not my intention at all. 1. Are there large amount of minority roups in your local community? Hispanic -- Yes. African American, Indian, Asian -- No. 2. Do you feel there are problems with sterotyping, discrimination and racism that effect the community in which you live? Very much so. This is one of the most racially divided communities I have ever lived in. There seems to be particular problems with all 3 of those things. 3. Do you feel that minority group intrest such as politics, jobs and heathcare are represented fairly in your community? The hispanic reprsentaion is on the rise and may be almost at a level you would call fair. However, the representation of other minority groups most certainly is not. 4.Are there issues relitive to gender in your community? Yes there are. Women are discriminated against while in pursuit of their education as well as while working in legal and scientific fields. I am sure it exist in other areas as well, but I am personally familiar with those. 5. Do you feel women are treated as equally as men in your community? Absolutely not. 6. Does the locoal media represent people like you, and the prominant mintorty groups? (do they look like you? ) Yes, people like me are reprsented (I am Caucasian) and I would say the Hispanic group is also represented. Other minority groups are not. 7. How do leaders in your community treat people like you? How do they treat others? Is there and appartent lack of intrest from one grup to the next? Leaders in my community treat people like me fine. They do not treat other minorities well. There is definately a lack of interest between leaders of the different ethnic groups. In fact there is even disinterest between leaders of minority groups. 8. How does the community treat you, or people of your race and gender? How do they treat others of diffrent race and or gender? People of my race (Caucasian) are treated well. My gender (female) is discriminated against by my community. Others of a different race and gender are also treated unfairly and discriminated against. I must also add that the minority groups also discriminate against Caucasians and each other in my community -- each group treats the others unfairly. I personally am treated different by my community because my husband is African American and our children are multi-racial. 9. If you could solve any inequites in your community, what would you change, how and why? I would work to change how people look at each other -- how they see color (race) rather than the person. That to me is the problem. If we continue to talk in colors, we can never truly come together as a community. We must be seen as one race, the human race, and then we can work on breaking down walls and building coalitions that will empower everyone in our community. After all, most of us have the same goals -- economic and social development, equality, etc. By the way, I feel I should also add that my city was recently proclamied the 2nd most conservative city in the Nation. __________________

| wow, some great reponses already, and I really appriecaiate it. I also wanted to let people know I was not starting this tread to upset or hurt feeling. This is all for a paper that I am doing for school. (fun I know)But I also feel that we need to be aware of what our comminities are like becasue only as active participants can we help tp foster a change for the better. While doing this paper I found in my community is very biased and racist. It really bothers me becasue I was brought up not to see the color of ones skin, or care about what their beliefs were, people are good people no matter what they believe or look like, if the heart is bad, so is the person. I just wish all people were brough up this way. Anyways, I really really appriecate the imput, I really need it, becasue to look at only one area (my own) is diffrent than getting oppinions from everywhere. Thanks so much again!!!

| Marlee - I just wrote a similar paper for my similarly titled class last semester. I'll try to help: 1. Are there large amount of minority groups in your local community? Yes, more than half. We also have a lot of cops and firemen and other public service people in my 'hood. Mostly Latino. I'm talking about my neighborhood - not Chicago as a whole. 2. Do you feel there are problems with stereotyping, discrimination and racism that affect the community in which you live? No. Not at all. If a black person is on one of our buses, I am a little surprised to see them - just because there aren't many in my neighborhood. 3. Do you feel that minority group interest such as politics, jobs and healthcare are represented fairly in your community? Yes, definitely. 4. Are there issues relative to gender in your community? No, not at all. 5. Do you feel women are treated as equally as men in your community? Yes, they'd better be or there would be major lawsuits and uproar. 6. Does the local media represent people like you, and the prominent minority groups? (Do they look like you?) The media is stupid. I also wrote a paper about this. The local news does a good job, but entertainment television sucks. Stereotypes run rampant. 7. How do leaders in your community treat people like you? How do they treat others? Is there and apparent lack of interest from one group to the next? They treat me very well. They treat others well (as far as I can see). No lack of interest. Many are Latinos themselves and if they're, not, they want Latinos to vote for them. 8. How does the community treat you, or people of your race and gender? How do they treat others of different race and or gender? Every answer would be "well". or "like they want to be treated". Racism isn't alive here at all. 9. If you could solve any inequities in your community, what would you change, how and why? More women in the Chicago City Council. Just to equal it up.
