Brandi, it sounds like you are doing some very interesting research and I would love to help you. But first I must say that in no way am I trying to be controversial by answering this thread, I am merely speaking of my personal experiences in my community. Also, I apologize up front in case someone is offended by my responses because that is certainly not my intention at all.

1. Are there large amount of minority roups in your local community?

Hispanic -- Yes. African American, Indian, Asian -- No.

2. Do you feel there are problems with sterotyping, discrimination and racism that effect the community in which you live?

Very much so. This is one of the most racially divided communities I have ever lived in. There seems to be particular problems with all 3 of those things.

3. Do you feel that minority group intrest such as politics, jobs and heathcare are represented fairly in your community?

The hispanic reprsentaion is on the rise and may be almost at a level you would call fair. However, the representation of other minority groups most certainly is not.

4.Are there issues relitive to gender in your community?

Yes there are. Women are discriminated against while in pursuit of their education as well as while working in legal and scientific fields. I am sure it exist in other areas as well, but I am personally familiar with those.

5. Do you feel women are treated as equally as men in your community?

Absolutely not.

6. Does the locoal media represent people like you, and the prominant mintorty groups? (do they look like you? )

Yes, people like me are reprsented (I am Caucasian) and I would say the Hispanic group is also represented. Other minority groups are not.

7. How do leaders in your community treat people like you? How do they treat others? Is there and appartent lack of intrest from one grup to the next?

Leaders in my community treat people like me fine. They do not treat other minorities well. There is definately a lack of interest between leaders of the different ethnic groups. In fact there is even disinterest between leaders of minority groups.

8. How does the community treat you, or people of your race and gender? How do they treat others of diffrent race and or gender?

People of my race (Caucasian) are treated well. My gender (female) is discriminated against by my community. Others of a different race and gender are also treated unfairly and discriminated against. I must also add that the minority groups also discriminate against Caucasians and each other in my community -- each group treats the others unfairly. I personally am treated different by my community because my husband is African American and our children are multi-racial.

9. If you could solve any inequites in your community, what would you change, how and why?

I would work to change how people look at each other -- how they see color (race) rather than the person. That to me is the problem. If we continue to talk in colors, we can never truly come together as a community. We must be seen as one race, the human race, and then we can work on breaking down walls and building coalitions that will empower everyone in our community. After all, most of us have the same goals -- economic and social development, equality, etc.

By the way, I feel I should also add that my city was recently proclamied the 2nd most conservative city in the Nation.
