Staying away from sugar??

Good tip about the nuts, seeds and fruits. I don't have a problem w/ candy though....as the only chocolate I eat is the dark chocolate and even then, it is the highest in cocoa that I can find...and I don't drink "soda", except there for awhile, I wanted something sweet and got hooked on caffeine free root beer (which is loaded w/ sugar)....but I haven't had one in awhile....I am just needing to control my intake of sugar...and since I am not getting the sugar from sweets, etc....I started looking at labels for everything else I eat/drink and almost everything has sugar in it!!!

Also...would you mind to share some of your "no sugar added" cookbook names, so I can find some good recipes? THANKS!

Soooo true.....I just couldn't believe how many foods contain sugar...I just honestly had no idea!

I have used the raw sugar...and it is okay....I use it in my DH's sweet tea and it dissolves good. The only other thing I used it for was when making DH a strawberry cheesecake for his birthday...used it in the crust and it didn't dissolve...he said it was like having pieces of "rock" candy in his crust...maybe I did something wrong?? I don't know...

Cindy...do you use less of the raw sugar, than what you would normally use of granulated sugar?

the one i mentioned above is my favourite sugar free cookbook. the dr.mercols total health program is a good one also. those are the only two i use at the moment. i find the nourishing traditions one very helpful because she also goes into detail about different foods and the health benefits or harm that they can cause. once you get familiar with all of the substitutes you can use for harmful foods, you can adapt almost any recipe to be sugar free! for example, if a recipe calls for breadcrumbs as a crust or coating, i will use crushed walnuts or almonds instead. instead of flour in gravies, i use arrowroot or almond flour. i usually now download any recipe i want off of the internet and can adapt it to my lifstyle!

Wow! Thanks for that :hug-1 It will be a timely process, but a good one once I learn all the tips/tricks and substitutions.

no problem! any questions you have, dont hesitate to ask. i really like when people decide to take control of their health i was going to go back to school to study wholistic nutrition before i ended up starting my own business. i think i would really enjoy it..maybe i will think about going back now that i sold my business!

Well, I do have some good news (already)....
The one holistic doctor in my area (who is 1 1/2 hours away and not taking patients).....well....I can be seen..........
Here is the email I received:

I would be happy to see you. I have an office adn mentor with Dr. Shipman. I am in the process of getting my Naturopathic Doctorite and Certification for Natural Health Professionals. Dr. Shipman says I am ready to start seeing people. I am trained in Iridology and nutritional/herb counseling.

What do you think? Should I go for it???

no harm in meeting, right? it can hurt the pocketbook a littlebit, but can you really put a price on your health??

now, is this just a wholistic dr or a nutritionist also??

I believe a nutrionist as well....I know that several people have went to home regarding food allergies and he has put them on "diets" to correct those and have given them information on wheat free/gluten free diets...as well as what supplements to help with various things, etc. So.....I am HOPING that he would cover BOTH areas!

I had asked about finding alternatives ways to help with my "depression" and thinking that if I could find the natural energy and healthier eating lifestyle that would help w/ various other areas of concern.

Well, now I am concerned....well, kind of....I tried to go to their website but it is no longer up...so I emailed a friend and told her that I had just heard from the doctor (well, not the actual doctor) today and they said they would be happy to see me. I asked her about them and she said that they do just about everything, but are more about herbs and which ones to take to help your problems. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

it sounds like they are more of a naturopathic doctor than a nutritionist. still no harm in going to see, but if you are looking for advice just about diet, it might not be the best place to look. BUT natoropathic doctors can help you out in a lot of different aspects of you life as well as some diet. i see my naturopath every 3 - 4 weeks. she has helped me with everything from building my immune system, depression, emotional issues and everything in between. you usually do not have to see a naturopath as much as i do, but i went to her initially to help my immune system and prepare my body for a healthy recovery from cancer so i see her a lot more often than most. i see her instead of a regular doctor and only go to a conventional dr for blood tests when needed.
