I didn't mean to be SO strong in my post but when a puppy is that small - they really need a qualified vet in case of complications etc....We didn't almost lose Chanel to the coccidia - it was dehydration and what would have followed would have been shock.....I apologise for getting heated - I couldn't edit ...it's just very close to my heart. | |

| I have never experienced coccidia, but it sounds awful. I read up on it after this thread. I consider myself lucky to have never gone through you went through. I am just wondering if there are some tips or something that people can give Figment

I do have tips for anyone who is experienceing this or WILL in their future - Any diarraah in a small puppy is usually normal - clear or blood in the stool is not normal. Coccidia causes dehydration and lethargy...which can easily lead to convulsions which is WHY I posted how important a vet visit is. Any small puppy with diarreah should get LOTS of fluids ...Pedialite is better. If they won't drink - use an eye dropper. Signs of lethargy means a trip to the vet as far as I'm concerned. If I had taken Chanel when this first showed - she would have been fine instead of close to shock. Breeders can be a wealth of information but when a sick puppy is in question - The VET is the person who needs to be treating a puppy - they can administer fluids or help prevent shock from setting in - Puppies can go DOWN FAST.... I was told Chanel only had HOURS left to live - course it was the weekend and we had NO CLUE to this ailment. She would act better - then worse - then better - and she had it 4 days only before we rushed her to the ER...chances are she had it longer but the symptoms were bad for 4 days...we just didn't know any better then - and her BREEDER was no help at all - I resent her so much for not speaking up when she knew she had problems with coccidia.

| You were lucky Villette, severe diahrrea can kill a very small pup in less time than 4 days!! Thank heavens, I cannot imagine a world where there was no Chanel I think the bottom line here is if your baby is sick take it to the vet,if you do not agree with your vet you can always exercise a second opinion with a different vet. |

| Most of us are used to seeing our babies full grown - as they are now. Think back to when your baby was tiny. Carter was 2.1# when I got him at 24 weeks; Cooper was 1.1# at 10 weeks. Any loss of hydration to a lil' pup like that can be devastating! If an owner is going to spend hundreds of dollars purchasing a pup that he/she expects to be a part of their family for 10-15 years, the cost of a vet visit should not be a consideration. Also . . . he/she should find a vet that they can be comfortable with and trust. Just as humans go to doctors even though we never expect to get sick, dogs are the same and need the care of someone that has learned and been tested in the proper care of dogs. If you think a young pup has an illness - vomitting, bloody or watery stools, etc. -- seek a professional for treatment and diagnosis.
