OK, now I'm MAD!!! So I take Miss Mackenzie to the vet this morning...after her ordeal of flying in yesterday. I was really concerned about her, as she seemed somewhat depressed and lethargic to me. Of course, my previous two yorkies were much older when I got them...4 months for Maggie, and 5 months for Molly, because they came from the same VERY RESPONSIBLE breeder. Therefore, I didn't know if what I was seeing was normal tiny puppy behavior. Also recall that this is the pup who was "rejected" by it's supposed-to-be mom a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't know but what she'd been kept in a crate for the past two weeks. In fact I suspect strongly she was, and unlike the large spacious crates I have for my pups (crates that say on the box they're designed for dogs up to 25 pounds...so they're pretty roomy for a pup thats only a couple of pounds), this was one that would fit under an airline seat...very small, very cramped, very dark. A puppy dungeon!!!!!!!!!! OK...so I was mad to begin with about the rejection of this puppy by its family (although, truth be told, that was the reason I got her, so it wasn't all bad), and I was very angry about the fact that instead of driving her down here as planned, they put her in a crate and shipped her on a plane for 9 freaking hours in 90 degree heat!!!!!!!!!! So, this morning it was off to the vet. They agreed with my assessment of "depression". Her gums and tongue were somewhat pale and her body temperature was about a degree to a degree and a half less than what it should be. Mackenzie not only has worms, she has Coccidia!!!!!!!!! I know that internal parasites are a fact of life with little puppies. (I don't know why this is true, I just know that it happens). What makes me mad about the whole situation is that this puppy went for at least two weeks untreated while she laid about in her small, dark crate waiting to come to Ohio. So, it's a week or so of antibiotics (Albon)...and I suppose I have to keep her away from the other dogs (which isn't going to help a bit with her socialization, or them getting used to her. I'm really glad to have her. And I'll do whatever is necessary to get her healthy and make her happy to be here. I am just in total dispair over the fact that this little girl's breeder (not to even mention my friend's family) would have let her go a couple of weeks being sick. Oh, and the vet states she questions the records that came with her. She believes based on her teeth that she is even younger than 12 weeks! Poor little pumpkin. Pray for her! (OK...I've vented now. I feel ever so much better! I'm sorry you had to hear all of that. I suppose I really should call and yell at the friend who sent her to me. However, in the great scheme of things Mackenzie is probably ever so much better off being here than any of a number of other places she could be...places where they'd not particularly care if they were taking really good care of her!) |
Hi How old does the vet think she is? I think its great that you are taking such good care of her. Who are these horrible people you got her from? |
aww poor puppy |
Oh that's terriable that they did that! Its so sweet of you to take her in and take care of her. she will be in my thoughts and prayers. she's in the best home possiable right now good luck! |
When I got my pup he had Coccidia and Giardia. he was on antibiotics for a ewek and a half. Poor little guy. Hope Mackenzie gets to feeling better soon she is in my thoughts and prayers. Bless your heart you are doing a great thing here by taking her in. P.S. how old did they tell you she was? |
Poor poor baby! Is she eating well? Coccidia usually lies dormant in puppies and is "activated" so to speak by stress. I doubt she had it when she left the breeder and it probably developed when she was moved from one place to another so many times. Sounds like you caught it before it affected ther o the point of missed meals and low blood suger thank goodness. What did she weigh? Who was her breeder? Have you talked to the breeder? My daughter's puppy developed coccidia and then wouldn't eat and we had to syringe feed him for about a week but he is healthy and fine now! A great little happy guy! Anyway, was she healthy otherwise, knees, no open fontanels, hernias, ear mites, etc.? Do you have the vet records from when yiur friend took her to the vet? Is she current on her shots? |
Oh that poor baby! What a horrible start to life! I am very interested in her and how she is doing so please keep posting about her. |
Oh poor little Mackenzie, we will keep her in our thoughts and prayers. It's a good thing you saved her and are giving her a happy loving home!! |
The poor little baby! I feel awful..I'm sure she will be just fine, Besides, shes got a great name ;) hehehe |
God works in mysterious ways and sent Mackenzie (cute name) to someone who will finally take good care of her!! |
Awww poor MacKenzie! She is so lucky to have you! We will be praying that she feels better soon and will be frisky and playing with your other babies! Kisses from us.... |
Poor puppy! I felt so sad reading it, but I feel better now because I know she is in a better place with a family who will care for her. My pup was on Albon too for a week. The breeder knew that one puppy had it so he put all the puppies on it. The vet said TJ probably didn't have it. I can't believe that breeder was so cruel. I can't imagine ever treating a puppy or dog of mine that way. How old does the vet think little Mackenzie is? I agree with lilliput about God working in mysterious ways. Good luck with her. We all know you will give Mackenzie (such a cute name) a great home and spoil her!! I will be praying for her. By the way, where in Ohio do you live? I live near Cleveland. Keep us updated on little Mackenzie! A Message from TJ and Riley: Quote:
