| New guy with a new Yorkie Hi all. I've loved Yorkie's for year's, ever since I bought my girlfriend one, but have never owned one myself. To make a long story short, a friend recently found one in the wood's. It was very cold and raining, and the poor little guy was near death. He put an ad in the paper's lost and found. Well no one claimed him, so he gave him to me. He was in really bad shape. He's really submissive and is affraid of everything. When ever you go to pet him, he flinches. I think he's been beat. So I take him to the vet, and it turn's out he had a chip in him. The original owner didn't want him back, and said he was missing for a week. I found out he's been passed around alot. Now I know why. He refuses to go potty outside. That probly explains the beating. I'm being really paitent with him, but so far no luck. I'm going to try the crate method next. I sure hope it works. Here's a few pic's of Quincy, and he's not too happy with me at the time. I just made him go outside in the rain and he didn't like it. He did perk up a little when I asked him where the cat was. This is the most cat hating dog I've ever seen. He really viciously attack's them. My cat has been hid since he came into the house. What's really funny is the cat used to slap the heck out of our Rot that we just recently lost. I guess the cat can tell this dog really hate's her, and the Rot was a push over,,,lol. | awwwwwwwwwwww............ hes a cutie, and you are a great person to take him in..... I swear by the crate method my toby hated it at first, but now it is his "safe place" , i think it will work particularly well in your case because of the dogs history, if he was beaten then a "safe place" is probably the best thing he could have..... as far as house training, what method are you using??? i am currently trying to housebreak toby (he is about 16 weeks) and i am using pee pee pads, these are great if you dont want to take the dog out in the middle of the night, or if its cold...... the important thign with housetraining is to be patient (but i think youve got a good handle on his feelings and what hes goign through) and also to start out in a small space, DO NOT make the same mistake i did if you are using the pads.... i let toby have the run of teh house (BIG MISTAKE), now when he is not with me, he is in his crate.... this is a great forum, you will find no lack of help here congrats on youre new baby |

| Heck you guy's are some fast poster's. I wasn't finished editing,,,,lol. So far I've been trying the treat method to get him outside, and then one when he comes back in. He just doesn't want to go outside for anything. I guess if I was in the wood's freezing for a week, I might want to stay in too. Next thing I did was set up a "bathroom" for him in the garage. It's a big box that he can get into. I set it where he can feel like he's sneeking since that seems to be his thing, and have some shelter like he was inside. Of course I put pad's in there. Unfortunatly he want's no part of it. Next thing I'm going to try is the crate(as soon as I buy one). I'm going to feed him some can food, then put his little butt in there along with his bed that he love's. We'll see what happen's then. Here's a pic of him with my ex-girlfriend's dog. I sure miss that dog,,,,lol. Fritz and Quincy. "The Boy's". Last edited by Cal; 01-06-2005 at 08:34 PM. |

| He is a cutie! Hopefully things will get better as he gets more used to you and realizes you are full on love. It's so sad that people can treat dogs that way. I'm glad he's with you now! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I will take a lot of patients with him, but older dogs can learn. You might try a belly pad on him. You hook it around them and if they pee it goes on the pad. On unitedyorkierescue.org in the yorkie shop you can buy one or see what they look like. The people on the rescue sight use then alot on older dogs they are trying to house break. If you lived closer I have a crate boxed up, I failed with both my yorkies on crate training lol. Good luck and rescue dogs once they understand you will love them no matter what make the best pets...................Cindy |

| Welcome Cal & Quincy!! What a little sweetheart he is! His eyes look so sad ... I'll bet they will look happy in no time at all! Congratulations ... what a lucky boy to have been so fortunate and found someone with such a big heart. Once he "gets it" that there are great people who won't mistreat him, I'll bet you will never have a more loyal friend! We found that patience and consistency was the key for training Toto ... she has never been mistreated, she just has that stubborn Yorkie personality! We used the reward method for training to the wee wee pad which takes a lot of attention but was certainly "rewarding" for us once she got the idea! She is over 17 months now and still occasionally has an "accident" but it's always due to something being "amiss" in her little world so we try to be very forgiving! The first thing we did was to teach her the word "no" ... doesn't have to be loud nor do you have to scream or hit!! Just needs to be firm and they are so very anxious to please their "human" that once they understand, all you have to do is tell him "no" in a conversational tone and he will understand! At least, it works for Toto!! Good luck and keep us posted!

| Cal - I think it's great that you have taken Quincy in. He looks like a cutey! I use the crate for training my little guy, he's 4 months. I think it's the best thing if you can't be with them 24-7. Like everyone has said, patience is key. And just try to reward him as much as possible when he does go in the right place. Since he seems so scared of going outside, using the pee pad might be the best method for him, at least for now. Good luck! Brandi & Hercules |

| Poor lil' guy Poor lil' guy. At least he's got a new owner now...YOU! It sounds like you'll be good for him. If he doesn't like to go outside, just paper train him. Put him in a crate when you can't watch him, and take him out every couple of hours or after he eats, and place him on the paper. Just keep putting him on the paper until he goes, and then praise him A LOT! Give him a treat, too. They always go after they eat, and after they wake up. The good thing about Yorkies, is that if they do have an accident, it's only a tiny puddle! Good luck to you. Have patience and kindness and I'm sure you'll do fine. |

| Not outside! And please don't leave in all by himself in the cold garage. Yorkies like to be right with you. Especially since he was so mistreated. |

| Quincy was what I had picked out for Buckeye because we got him in Quincy, Ill. But my husband would not name him that because the little girl next door has the same name. needless to say I like the name. It breaks my heart to know that there are millions of pets in this world being kicked and mistreated all because the owner could not handle a higher intelligence. Thank you for being his rescue angel. Just think if he were human and be treated that way he could end up a criminal or murderer. I don't think a little pee and poop in the house is all that bad considering.

| Aww, cute little guy! Just take care of him and have some patience, it will be a bit hard since he may have been abused before. But with some love and caring, he'll turn around! |
