| HE WONT SLEEP AT NIGHT- help My yorkie is 9 months, he has been sleeping through the night in his bed, which is inside his crate. Usually around 6 am he wakes up and whines to be let out to go potty. After he goes potty outside I bring him into bed with my husband and I for about half and hour, while we wake up, watch the news, play with him etc... I recently took him to visit my sister. Since we flew, I did not bring a bed and since it was just me, I had him sleep with me in my bed. Now, back in town with the "Our bed, your crate" arrangement he is not happy! Whines and whines and whines- I know he wants to get into bed with us! I would, but our bed is really high off the ground and my husband is a sleeping tosser and turner. I have had to put him in the other room so I can sleep... but now he pees and poops in the middle of the night and I feel bad because I want him to feel close to us during the night instead of in the back room by himself Help! What do I do to get us back to the old arrangement!

| It's difficult isn't it! these little ones can easily become 'spoiled' I would just persevere and eventually he should realise that he is not going to get his own way..they are like human babies really..they need routine..break that routine and you are back to square one again!...I would LOVE my pixie to sleep with me..but its just not safe for her..she's tiny...she could fall off the bed in the night..or my over six foot hubby could roll on her in the night! the first night she came home with us i put her in her crate and i have stuck with it...if i cannot watch her..especially if i'm vacuuming the house etc..she goes in her crate..for her own safety...she rarely makes a fuss now because she's used to it...but i know if i didn't stick with it all my training would be a waste of time and she would probably be screeching everytime i put her in there! Good luck with this and let us know how you get on..others may have better advice than i am able to give!

| You need to get him back on a schedule.. Keep him in your room so that he can see you but in his crate.. Even if he whines you have to ignore him.. Its goign to be hard but he has to get back to a schedule. |

| They do get spoiled easily. Can you get him stairs to get up and down off your bed, or would you rather him sleep in his crate?

| ROFL....so easy, buddybramble, great advice! But on the serious side...how about covering the crate with a towel, blanket, so he doesnt see you. He may get bored, and just decide to lay down and not whine. Continue to be persistant, and patient...he will catch on. Be the boss of him-good luck!

| Thanks for the replies! Yes, I agree.... I messed with the schedule, and now I am paying the consequences! I have tried to ignore him in our room, but the hours of whining and "snarfing" have made for a couple of sleepless nights, not to mention the many times I have taken him outside in the middle of the night, just in case he really did have to go potty and was not trying to weasel his way into our bed! I would get stairs, but he crawls around while sleeping. He fell off the bed when we were visiting my sister, but luckily it was a super low platform bed, so no harm done. I would really like to get him to sleep in his own bed without the crate... I have always had big dogs in the past and they just naturally want to sleep next to you in their own bed- any advice for that next step?

| They do get into new habits so quickly, we went on holiday when buddy was 5 months and he stayed with my hubbys family. They let him sleep on the bed and when we got back he was no way gonna go back to sleeping on his bed next to our one. I must admit after one night of him whining we gave up and he's pretty much been on our bed ever since. He is a big boy tho so we don't have the squashing falling off the bed worries. I think just stick with it and hopefully he'll get the idea again, i think i'd bring him back into your room again tho, if he's got used to snuggling up to you at night, in a room alone is probably upsetting him more. good luck !

| Ok..Im not trying to talk you into letting him sleep on your bed..just giving you an idea of our way.. My husband and I share the bed with 2 Yorkies and a Boykin Spaniel, a Himalayan and a Ragdoll cat..I am a terrible deep sleep and hubby is a toss and turner our dogs quickly realized how to get out of the way before its too late and both actually liked to be squished a bit and will push theirselves right under me if they can..Reece is 5 pounds and Soleil is 18 weeks and about 3 pounds and both have been in our bed since they were 8 weeks old..I did have a sleepless night the first time but believe me they are smart enough to move out of the way if need be..then they sleep on my pillow or at the foot of the bed...I dont have stairs but I also dont have a tall bed either..so if this ever becomes and option for you...I just wanted you to know that they can be easily trained to stay in bed safely with you...also...it was great for housebreaking at night...no one wanted to pee in our nice warm bed lol.. Good luck!! Dawn |

| Going through the same thing! UGH! Having had another sleepless night last night, I can completely empathize with you. We have been letting our dog sleep with us first thing in the morning after she goes potty. In hindsight, we should have never allowed this! Historically, (she's about 1/ 1/2 years now) she has slept in her crate next to my bed with no problems. Now, she whines and whines to be let out. I cannot take it! I had to move her to the basement which is finished and she barked the entire night. We didn't want her to get her way.....I think we are confusing her with allowing her to sleep on the bed in the morning. She doesn't know why she can't do that throughout the night. I'm at a complete loss as to how to break this. We didn't let her out last night despite the repeated whining....I hope she learns but I have a funny feeling this 4 pound yorkie will be in our bed shortly! Let me know if you have a great solution. I would have thought a night alone would have helped her but apparently, she's not catching on! |
