I tend to get passionate LOL and this post is correct

I do not like working with intact males. in fact most of my bite marks on my arms come from intact males (the rest are from cat claws). They also constantly have schmegma coming from their penis which then happens to get on my hands/arms/clothes while working on them. totally not a fan....

Healthwise, neutering reduces the risk of testicular cancer, prostate cancer, and other prostate related problems. vet's do not tell you think because they want to make more money by roping in another surgery, these are facts, not opinions.
an example of aggression in intact males:
A little story about what happened today at work. We had an Italian Greyhound come in with a bite wound that it got from the "family" Labrador. BOTH dogs are intact and they had a dominance/territory issue which the Iggy lost....big time. The lab grabbed it by its head and neck and would not let go. The owner had to hit the lab on the head to get it to release the iggy, and then the lab turned on him. the iggy was bit so bad that it had a torn trachea and esophagus, and serious trauma. he was not doing well and died on the table.

the owners, instead of asking if they could get their lab neutered, asked if we could remove its k-9's instead so it couldn't bite anyone else. senseless....

My point is even the smallest intact male can go into the red zone and have an aggressive/dominant moment. why risk it?

buddy's neutered and his personality didn't change one bit, he's still protective, he still marks when outside on his walk but never indoors. the good thing was it stopped his constant humping that was so embarrasing, the kids soft toys were his main target we had friends bring their 2 yr old spaniel here last week he's not neutered he went upstairs and peed all over Buddys bed and up my hall wall Ive had to tell them they just can't bring him anymore plus if they open their front door he's off! but they won't have him neutered because the man thinks its cruel to a male and not 'macho'
I think its worse to have instincts screaming at you to go mate and then always be told NO!

We just went through exact same thing with our 10 yr old dog. She's not spayed and she's never been pregnant. She had huge lump full of pus that had to be removed. She also had a hysterectomy. Vet said this could have been prevented if she would have been spayed

Unfortunately, not everyone was responsible with their pets and now we have a huge pet overpopulation problem which results in millions of dogs and cats being euthanized every year. It is hard to watch your pets every minute and even the most responsible person can make a mistake, and then there are those who don't care and let their dog mate with anything.

So I understand why someone might think they will just be really careful, but can you really be with your dog every single second?[/QUOTE]

I think I have a diferent perspective. Living in NYC, in an apartment, you do not ever take your dog out without a leash. When we used to go to the off leash dog park in the 70's, nobody sat down. You ran around with your dog. The park was surrounded by heavily trafficked roads. It's just a different way of life. I never even had a yard to let my dog run around in.

I do feel that a dog who can be allowed to go loose for awhile (lucky dog!)
must be neutered unless you're breeding. Then, I think you have to take complete responsibility and watch your dog every second.

.....you seem to have a nice balance of passion and open mindedness...I applaud anyone who does their research then makes a decision w their heart....I'm sure whatever you decide will be the best decision for you.....

skoshi doesnt hump, doesnt mark in the house, or any of that he is 10months! Yes i know this could happen but if you read other threads about marking some peoples males still marked after neutering so you cant say all pups will stop. Some wont. but yes i think it will be hard to have intact male when females are in heat.

I still dont know what i want to do. I see points from both sides but i dont agree with all. this is JMO!!

I dont want skoshi to change at all! He is hyper oh well that is his personality and i love it! I dont care if he changes for the better and becomes all sweet and loving. I love his personality now.

To neuter or not is really a touchy subject. I still haven't decide to neuter mine yet and I am taking full responsibility of watching him 24/7 to make sure he does not contribute to the pet population and I am okay with it. I do understand about the pet overpopulation problem and I never take any chances with my dog. He doesn't hump, doesn't mark and I know that if I decide to neuter him, his personality will not change because that is his personality. I am just not convinced that it is the best for them because yes you may eliminate some types of cancers because the parts are not there to begin with but you may also increase the chances of other types of cancers because I believe functions in the body are inter-linked in some ways and until the day there is a full research done on it with a result that says so, I will wait. I guess it is easier said for people who only owns one dog. It would be different if you have more than one. I do not want to step on anyone's toes here, just sharing what I think.

i am really torn on this subject, My Toby is not neutard but i don't thibk I coyld bring myself to do it to him. Just like people if it come to that, then we'll face the procedure and cancer when it arrives. I got lucky I guess because everyone is encouraged to avoid marking but I trained Toby well and thankfully he doesn't lift his leg to anything in our house.

I am still on the fence about this also, Wicket is 8 mos old and I still haven't decided either way, I also have a jack russell thats a female, she humps, and marks she been spayed, we also have a black lab male thats was neuter at 6mos and he also marks everthing, he is an outside dog.
My first yorkie was neuter at 6mos he became over weight and a diabetic when he was 3yrs old. I don't know if any of this has to do with him being neuter or do. but I am having second and thirds thought about doing it to Wicket, also he only weighs 3lbs 12ozs I am not sure about putting him under
anesthesia.

A dog's metabolism does slightly slow down some because of the lack of hormones, but a dog does not become overweight because of being neutered. A dog becomes overweight because it is being overfed and not getting enough exercise.
