Where could I get washable ones?? That sounds like a good plan.... As for the pen...we're pretty much sold on that option...agreed it's a better option than a crate. | |

| I use a crib mattress pad (waterproof) on the floor, and I put white cloth baby diapers on top for potty pads. My boys go outside and use potty pads because I'm gone for work sometimes 9 hours. So they don't use them very often, meaning I only change them once every other day. I wash the soiled pads once a week, they do not smell very bad, but I keep them in a trash can with a lid until wash day. They cost about 7.00 I think for 12 diapers. I'm on a tight budget and this has worked out better for me financially than when I used the blue disposable chux pads. You can also look on valethics.com for some larger washable pads.

| And I still think you should rehome Tanner. From what you've told us I don't think you have the lifestyle OR the heart for a puppy. I'm sure someone on YT could give this baby a warm, loving home. Although you may provide food and shelter for him, he seems more of a nuisance to you than a joy. And puppies need a lot more than just food and shelter.

| A lot of us are getting these washable pads - though I dont have mine yet, but others say they are great: http://www.valethics.com/buy-recl-pads.htm I have a male maltese who could not be trained either. Although, I never tried keeping him in his crate for very long. Though it didn't matter, when I returned he'd have urine and feces everywhere! I know its frustrating! So-the crate didn't work for him. I had to keep him literally by my side in the house (he would also lift his leg!) and frequently take him outside. At night, I had to put his leash on him, in his bed, right beside my side of the bed, in order to "trust" he would not get up and be naughty! I am hoping you have better luck with an xpen, if you decide to try that - however my dog would climb over mine So you may have to find one that he can't climb.....

| I have the washable one too. They are great, BUT, since Tanner is left caged up for 10 to 20 hours, I DO NOT suggest the washable ones, simply b/c they don't dry and you will be back to him lying around it wet pee for those 10 to 20 hours. I would honestly set up a e-pen in the kitchen or get baby gates to keep him locked in the kitchen. Then get good absorbant wee wee pads (I gave you a link from e-bay, trust me, they are good). Then go to Petco or Petsmart and get the "Doggie Litter Box" and put the wee wee pad inside the box and put it in the kitchen with him, this way he learns that he must step into the box to go potty. This method helps with the peeing half on the pad and half off. Being that you are gone for 10+ hours a day, he needs to have some sort of potty training that makes sense. |
