| Did your little boy gain weight after THE operation? Hello all of you that have Yorkie boys! My little furbaby will be neutered soon, and people have been telling me horror stories of how dogs(not Yorkies) have doubled in size! Has your baby gained weight? Any recommendations to prevent the weight gain? How about personality change. What should we expect? Background: He is just about 8 months, weighs 8lbs and very, very energetic! We take two long walks a day and he eats the same amount of food everyday with no weight gain. Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

| my bunjee was nearly 5 lbs when he was neutered. now he's 9 lbs! but the weight gain was not due to the neutering. he was only 4 months old when he was neutered and still a growing boy. bunjee's parents were between 7 to 9 lbs themselves. so bunjee is "bigger" but not by much. bubba was neutered sometime in his adult life and still weighs 6.5 lbs right now. from what i've read, neutering earlier can result in a higher adult weight because testostrone is what tells the body it's reached adult weight. but the weight gain is negligible. neutering will not effect weight in older puppies/adult dogs. |

| We had a cocker spaniel that gained a lot of weight after she was fixed. This is one reason I don't want to get Diesel fixed.

| I heard such stories too, I read that there are hormones regulating the feeling of satiation in the parts that are removed during the procedure. That's why dogs start to overeat. Pepper was neutered over 3 weeks ago and I don't see any change, he actually eats less now, but he's still growing a little, I guess. I'll increase his walk/exercise time if that happens.

| Most dogs that gain weight after spaying or neutering is cause by lack of exercise and wrong diet . |

| When I had Gabby fixed years ago (she's almost 10), she weighed about 9 pounds - she now weighs 16!! Not sure how much of the gain is attributed to the procedure or her just being "lazy". She is not over-fed, only eats once a day, and doesn't get an overabundance of treats. Vet says she's healthy though. With Gage, when he was altered, he weighed 6 1/2 pounds, maybe closer to 7 pounds. He now weighs 9 pounds so he only gained a couple of pounds. Since I had never planned on breeding any of the yorkies I've owned (and after experiencing one heat cycle with my first one - knew it was NOT for me), it was a "no-brainer" for me to have them "fixed". Best of luck to your little one.

| Are you asking if they get chubby or hit a growth spurt and grow bigger? Bentley was neutered at 5 months old and was still growing now he is on the thin side at 7 pounds, he's tall and thin. Cha Cha (my rescued chihuahua) was neutered at 2 years old and she's normal weight at 4 pounds. Sherman was neutered at 12 weeks of age and now he's 8 months old and still has that puppy chubbiness weighing 3 3/4 lbs and he loves to eat! So I may have to watch that he doesn't get too chubby. As for personality changes, Bentley did calm down since he was a pretty hyper puppy, but he's a still a very active 3 year old today. ChaCha didn't change at all but she was over a year old when she came to us so I don't know how she was as a puppy. Sherman is active but not hyperactive. I hope this helps!

| Well it's only been a month, but so far I haven't noticed any change in Jackson. He is just as active, eats the same amount, and although I'm sure he's gained a little weight (since he is only 7 months and still growing), I can't see any real difference.

| lillybelle was spayed in October, at 1yr of age. She weighed 4lbs. I do believe she has gained wt. She's not bigger in height or size, just rounded and firmer, more solid and it makes her slightly heavier-Im not sure of her weight now..probably 5lbs. I dont feed her anymore than I did previously. |

| I'm sure you'll get replies on both sides of this one but I agree with Diego...if a dog gains weight after being spayed or neutered it's because their owners allow them to get lazy or they need a diet change. Jo was neutered at about a year old (he's now 2) and he maintained the same weight until recently...he's gained about 12 ounces in the last few months. However, we've been changing foods to try to find out what he may be alergic to so the calorie count in some were higher than others and also, it's winter and he doesn't like to go out to play in the cold so the activity level is lower right now! Riley was neutered around 6 months I think and he hasn't changed an ounce...he's now a little over 1 1/2 years old. |

| I've read that if you exercise them then they shouldn't. But who knows, it might be like people, where after a certain age you gain weight easier But for a dog to double in size...If that IS true, it was probably just an owner who didn't give there dog any exercise

| I noticed some people are talking that the dogs 'calm down' after the procedure... How long after the spay/neuter does it happen?

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Lex is being neutered tomorrow morning so I will let you know how his weight goes. He is now 9 1/2 lbs but you won't know it to look at him. The vet says it's his bones. Who knows. My dad and husband both said that neutering will put a bit of weight on them and change their disposition. I know getting my tubes tied I put on a few pounds . Anyways....last year we had April spayed and she did put on some weight even though she eats the same amount of food but her personality stayed the same. My old male cat Tyrant gained weight when we had him neutered but his personality stayed the same...he remained like a playful kitty down until the end.

| Thanks all! You guys really know your Yorkies! Thanks for the help! We will love our little boy no matter how big he is! But we just want him to be healthy, and not get too heavy. But thanks to you all we aren't as worried as we were! Regardless he is scheduled for the surgery this coming Tuesday! Any more comments are appreciated! P.s. His name, "Chibimaru", means small and round, but here in Japan it's pretty funny because we introduce him all the time to Yorkies half his size!
