| Worried about my baby? Any advice...PLEASE I am absolutely 100% in love with my new baby..he is great...he gets so excited to see me when he wakes up or I walk into the room. He is doing great on his potty pads..mostly...but I am back and forth on worrying about him..here is the deal! He is about 8.5 weeks old, weighs 1 lb and scares me to death! We have had one hypoglicemic episode on the second day of his arrival to me...I took him to the vet on the first day for a check up, everything was fine..the next day couldn't get him to eat so I gave him honey to keep his blood sugar normal but w/o food it's a battle...he started acting strange so I gave him more honey (it had been a few hours since the previous 1/4 cc I gave him) as an emergency to get him alert...I rushed him to the vet and by then he was more alert and nosey with the other dogs but still wouldn't eat..vet said he must eat even if you have to syringe it every couple of hours and continue to give him honey to keep his bloodsugar ok...well, we got home and he ate his dry food (he hates anything mushy or wet, picky boy!) for over an hour..had a great night with him..woke up in the middle of the night to syringe his food still... next day..he wouldn't eat during the day again so I fed him myself every 2 hours..got home around 8 he ate like a champ again on and off for like 2 hours...then the following morning wasn't wanting to eat... sorry this is so long... MY Question is: Anyone had a problem with a puppy who only eats at night on his own...I feel bad force feeding him but god forbid anything happen so I will continue till things level out with his habits.. I am syringing him moist food (obviously) but does ANYONE know if there is a very fatty moist food to give him to kinda fatten him up...I have read Cesar Canine..is that a good one? Any help please thanks! I will do ANYTHING for my new little love!! lauren..new furmother who has tons of questions!! |

| Lauren, Is your breeder local? Have you spoken with them? I would ask that they take the pup back for a couple more weeks until he has put on some weight and is a little older. Good luck!

| That is exactly what I thought about and discussed with my fiance but I am terrified that she wouldn't be able to give him as much time as I am..do you think his mommy was still nursing him occassionally? I mean he has been alright for 8 weeks prior to us having him so I assume it had something to do with his mother...I am just so worried that something could go wrong and I would be crushed...and not that the breeder wasn't great but what if she sold him and told me he didn't make it or something..not that any amount of money is worth his health but some people aren't as honest and kind as others...I am so confused and don't know what to do. How can I be so happy and so sad at the same time...? HMMMM... Exhausted and confused, Lauren |

| He is small but alot of us on here had one his size when we brought them home. Chachi was a l lb and Jewels was 12 oz. The most important thing is to get him to eat. Lil Caesars is a good food because alot of picky eaters will eat it. They also have alot of varieties of it so you can keep them from getting bored with it. I dont know if it is more fatting. I know some people on here say it is but mine eat it everyday and it has not been fattening to them. The vet would have a high calorie food Prescription PD. You can also try feeding him Gerber babyfood meat sticks. Also give him Nutical three times a day to revent low blood sugar. My vet told me once they get to 2 lbs they are not so fragile. Good luck they are so sweet when they are little like that. I was looking at pictures of mine when they were young like that yesterday and I am ready for another puppie just looking at them

| My breeder gave me Neutra Cal when I got Venus. Its a good thing too, cause I had no idea about blood sugars and stuff! When she wouldn't eat, I'd put a dab of neurta cal on my finger and she'd lick it off. I did this 4 or more times a day. And each time I did this, she'd eat her food! Seems that stimulated her appetite. Then again, when I got Venus she was 10 weeks old. Most (good, reputable) breeders don't let the dogs go to their forever homes till at Least 10 weeks or older. Also your dog may have never learned how to eat from a bowl, or whatever your using. I had that problem with Venus too, and also the water too. As much as the breeder said she "ate kibble" I found this out not to be as true. I even had to teach her how to eat food and drink water at 10 weeks old. Yours is a lot younger than Venus was when I first got her. I'd let her lick food from my fingers, and each time, moving my fingers lower toward food or water. Last time, I had my fingers right IN the food or water just barely getting enough on my fingers and her tongue for her to find it. Took a few days, but she started eating from a saucier. Yours is mighty young, and may not have many teeth at all. I know Venus didn't have that many when I got her. When I introduced her to the kibble the breeder gave me, I had to mix it with her wet food, or put water on it to soften it up, or both. Good luck with this, and please get some Neutra-Cal. That can be picked up at any pet store, and really isn't that much. It can save you babies life!! Neutra-Cal is SO much better for them than honey. |

| I will def get some of the Neutra-Cal...the honey made me skeptical cause if all I had in my tummy was honey I think I'd feel ill... You know it's the strangest thing because he will eat out of a bowl..and won't touch moistened food...hates it. He chews well...slow but well and has pretty good bowel movements...problem is he only wants to eat at night..then he will be at the bowl for an hour..then lay down then want back down to much a few more kibbles. Has lots of energy, plays with the toys etc!! Just can't talk him into eating during the afternoon hours..he will even occassionally eat around 8 am (very little though on his own) before I leave for work...I am going to try a little concoction I found on here and see if I can get him a bit more of an apetite...I don't know what to do...anyone know about how long there little baby slept during the day? I know they sleep alot, but boy seems like that is all he does till around 7 or so... |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | When my Chanel was tiny like that I mixed a little cottage cheese in moistened WARMED kibble - she loved it - There's lots of information in the HEALTH Section and a search function you can type in search words - there's alot of really good information about feeding small puppies and especially hypoglycemia - for that, Nutrical is a must have - I got some the day before I brought mine home |

| When they are young like that it is normal for them to sleep almost all day with short bursts where they eat and play. If he id not eat or play a little then you would proably have something to worry about

| If nobody is home with your baby, he might be board all day alone. Try giving him some toys or a kong. For a cheap toy, try tying a knot in one of your old sock and giving it to him. |

| Try to give him the Ceasers warmed up a bit....or mix the Ceasers with hard food and warm it up a bit. He might like it better warmed up instead of cold. And I wouldn't do honey...I would do the NutriCal 3 times a day at least until he is 2 lbs or 12 weeks. |

| Good luck with your baby, he is adorable! I can't help with the weight or feeding issues because my Yorkie is a teapot. She is 5 months and 5 pounds and eats like a champ and always has. She will eat her food, Jazzy's food and the cats' food, if you don't watch her. She gets moist food once a day and kibble is always available. I can help with the sleeping question. Mickey (my 5 month old Yorkie) sleeps a great deal during the day. She has her very active play times but also takes naps throughout the day. She always has a super active period right after dinner, then pretty much settles down and sleeps through the night. You will have to post pictures of your baby as he grows, he is a real cutie!!! |

| You guys are great..he isn't home alone..I have actually brought him to work everyday to make sure his bloodsugar is ok and he is eating..even if it's force feeding (which has been soley forced during the day since his arrival)...today my fiance gave me a break and I have talked to him on the hour...he has never been with him all day alone and finally sees what I have been telling him about Stoli not eating and just laying around...he only sees the baby after I get off and he is great then, playing and eating etc.. BTW my work environment is an office setting..I have a very quiet warm place for him and he has room to roam and play if he wants...so I don't think it is the scenery (too much activity or stress etc) that makes him not wanna eat and just literally sleep all day...I feel like a crazy person when I check his gums constantly and give him his food on a schedule (not that I shouldn't do these things) but he seems so irritated with me..he looks up at me like, gosh mom, let me sleep!! I do let him sleep but I wake him to eat and pee and play if he has it in him... I cannot wait to get to the 12 week mark...I constantly pray that I can do everything possible to make sure he gets there with us... |

| Maizee was about the same size your baby is when I brought her home. She had a little problem eating as well and just wanted to sleep all day. She was so lethargic! But, I fed her some soft food mixed with her dry and she seemed to like that okay. She started eating more, and in a couple of weeks was bouncing off the walls. Personally, I think 8 weeks (that's when I got Maizee) is way to young for a baby to leave his/her mother, especially when they are so teeny. Just give him extra care and love, which sounds like what you are doing, and he will be just fine |
