| Question about Yorkie personality I really want a Yorkie and I have been searching for a breeder and I think I may have found one. One problem, I've never been around a Yorkie. Are they hyper dogs? Do they act anything like a Westie since they are both terriers? |

| I wouldn't call them "hyper" the way a Jack Russell would be hyper, but they do have a lot of energy in those cute little bodies! |

| Ive had yorkies for many years and have never had an hyper one, Chanel is only 8 weeks so i cant count her in yet, Chelsey is 5 months and very layed back, shes lazy lol... she plays when she feels like it, but is definatly not hyper, she loves to cuddle and will sit with me or hang on my shoulder for hours, my friend has a yorkie of the same age as Chelsey ( 5 months ) and thats a hyper active child she runs from one end of the house to the other, all day long and will find anything distructive to do, she never seems to get tired, when my friend puts her to bed at night she runs the marathon first around her pen till my friend tells her to go to SLEEP hardly eats anything so where she gets her energy from is very puzzling to us!!

YT Addict | I have a Yorkie and my boyfriends parents have a Westie. My Alex is nothing like their Westie. Alex is not hyper and never was. He could a stinker when he was a pup, but even then he was more laid back. He is almost 5 years old now, but he is more like a cat than a dog.

| I have two Yorkies and one would be considered hyper while the other is pretty calm. |

| I have two Westies, they're sisters and 5 years old this month; I've had them since they were 9 weeks old. I also have 2 Yorkies...Harry is 18 weeks; Paris is 17 weeks. Paris is hyper; Harry is more relaxed. I do not remember my Westies being as hyper as Paris when they were pups; so, in my opinion, it all depends on the terrier's personality.

| I really think it depends on the dog itself. There are some that are very hyper and then there are some that are really calm. You have to look at the parents and the puppy when you choose so you can determine its temperment. |

| I also have a westie and 2 yorkies. Hefner is hyper when we go to the park or playgroup. He loves to sleep however and sometimes doesn't really wake up until 10 am and he goes to sleep at 9pm and he naps during the day. He's a little pudgy. My westie was never really hyper but loved to play and learn tricks. She is very smart and loves to perform. Hefner is almost too hyper to learn tricks. Both are single minded if after a "mouse, rat or bunny which is what they are instinctually programmed to do! Terriers are notoriously stubborn and I would have to agree with that for both westies and yorkies. |

| Thanks! I had a Westie several years ago and that little dog was insane She was like a tornado going through the house, she would rip curtains off the windows, she pulled up half a room of carpet while I was taking a shower one day, she chewed the legs of my diningroom table until the table was ruined...I can't remember how many dog beds she chewed up We tried to crate her at night she would jump in the crate until she would tip in on its side, we bought a puppy playpen for her (four foot high) I knew she was too small to jump out of it yet she always managed to get out, so I faked a nap on the couch so I could figure out how she was getting out, she was climbing it. LOL she was hilarious as a puppy but the most destructive dog I have ever seen. When she got older she decided she did not like kids, she would snap at my sons if they got anywhere near her so I gave her to a friend of mine with no children. Even now, she is 5 years old, my friend has to put her in a different room if company comes over because she is so aggressive. That is the only dog (other than a rescue Boxer, but she was 7 or 8 years old and had been abused so I can understand that) that we have had that we really couldn't train. |

| Yorkies are really smart & easy to train (with the exception of housebreaking in my experience!!). Biddy is pretty hyper, but not destructive & Tucker is the laziest dog I have ever seen.

| My yorkie amazes people with her energy. "Hyper" sounds a little negative though. My husband and I prefer "spirited" or "extremely playful" to describe Lucky. We adopted her a few months ago, just before her second birthday. At first, her energy was a bit overwhelming, especially compared to the golden's, labs, and poodles that my friends and neighbors had. Now we adore her. She is very curious. When we are being lazy, she usually will lie around too, but as soon as she hears us getting up, she has to check out what we are doing and see if she can get us to play. Sometimes she will run as fast as possible around the house for no reason at all. Visitors who are used to laid back dogs usually think she is crazy, but people who enjoy an animated, energetic dog can't get enough of her. |

| I do think it is funny that Yorkies (and any small dog) for that matter, have gotten the reputation for being "hyper" or "yappers". I think it really depends on the dog itself, how it has been raised, the family environment, etc. My Honey has her moments of high energy but I think that is true for any dog. She spends just as much time lazing around like a total bum! We have to spend a lot of time "defending" her to people who have never been around Yorkies and just think they are ankle-biters and barking at every little thing all day long. One thing is for sure, I have had all different kids of dogs my whole life and you will never have another dog that will infuriate the crap out of you and have you wrapped around their little paw at the same time as much as you will with a Yorkie. They have such a personality, it really is like having another person in the house! Some dogs are pets, Yorkies are part of the family. |

| They ARE all different. I wouldn't say Simon is hyper, but curious. Anywhere I am I can catch him peeking after me, even if it's from a distance, he just cannot help but follow me - not even for attention, but for the simple sake of being a curious boy who can't miss out on anything! Best example is this photo... I was in the snow playing with Delilah...... it took someone else pointing out to me "Hey is that your little dogs head there in the background?" Lol.... it sure is. http://dmorgan.diaryland.com/images/100_0197.jpg Last edited by DMorgan; 05-10-2005 at 01:26 PM. |
