| Pity Party... need advice I am having a really hard time with deciding what to do. Not everyone knows the whole story, so I'll start at the beginning... I found a little girl with a breeder who is here on YT. I really liked her (the breeder) and the little girl was just what I wanted... I had some personal stuff come up, and thought I wasn't going to be able to get my little princess... so like any normal full grown woman, I called my mom & cried about it. The next day, my mom found a yorkie in the paper, and got it for me. This little girl (Annabelle) seemed to be just what I was looking for... age wise, size wise, and sweet as can be. She's even silky, and had papers. The woman knocked her price down because this pup has a hernia, and might require surgery. So I brought her to the vet yesterday. She does have a hernia; she also has almost a full set of baby teeth still (double row of teeth at almost 10m). She also has tapeworms. She also has stage 3 LP. I emailed the woman to let her know, because she has the parents and it's my understanding that LP is genetic... those dogs should not be bred again... right? She said that almost all 'toy' dogs have LP, and that she's had dogs since the 70's who've had it with no surgeries or problems. she said that the dog had her shots and was wormed, but it's not a one time thing (which I know, but you can't kill tapeworms with OTC wormers). She basically said that she paid a lot of money for Annabelle's mom, and I got a great deal, and if I wasn't happy, I can bring the dog back. I am at a loss. I need some thoughts and feedback... I have really started to bond with Annabelle. She loves me, and I really don't want her to go anywhere, but I don't have all that money right now. I am so upset, I apologize about how long this is, I just really needed to get it out. I don't know if I should just get done what I can, when I can, or find her a home that can do all the needed things at once... I love her, but want what's best for her... |

| Hmm.. it would be so hard to give up a puppy even after having it for only a few minutes! I guess you really need to follow your gut instincts on this. I can't understand why a breeder would not have taken care of those puppy teeth a lot sooner - that can be painful if left. It is true that a lot of 'toy' breeds have LP, but not all - and it's quite ridiculous of her to think this is ok. A responsible breeder would be trying to better the breed - by breeding traits like this OUT, not continuing to breed them. I dont know what advice to offer you - just do what you feel best doing. I would be calling my mom and crying, haha. Good luck in your decision

I get attached very easily too...(this is one of the reasons I don't breed...I'd have to buy another house just for my furbabies!) I probably wouldn't be able to bring her back to the breeder...Do you think she may give you some money back where the pup is going to need surgery? The worms you will be able to treat and get rid of, the teeth can be pulled (maybe the same time the hernia is taken care of) and as far as the LP...I realize this is common in small dogs but, I have NEVER heard that most small breeds that it. I would talk to you vet and see what he thinks about it and if he recommends surgery or not. (I don't know alot about LP)...Good luck in your decision...It's going to be a hard one.

| I so sorry you have to go through this. I don't have any advice. This is one of those times when only you can make the decision. You're the only one who knows how attached you are to her and she to you. I'll be saying a prayer for your decision no matter what it is...just that you have peace in making it.

| Oh Jessica, I feel for you. I really don't have any advice, it's like jumping into one fire and jumping right into another. If it was my Tika (I've had her since July) - I would do anything for her, I'm too bonded with her and she's like a daughter to me. I'm a believer of "things happen for a reason" and "things will work itself out - just keep the hope and faith". Can you ask your vet if he/she can put you on some sort of payment plan to pay for the surgery if she needs it? If you explain your situation, your vet may help you out. Best of luck to you and Annabelle - keep us posted.

| I am sorry you are having so many issues with your little girl. Did you have any kind of contract? Anything in writing? |

| The vet did reccomend surgery... said I could wait until it is causing her trouble, but if it got taken care of now than it would cause less trouble. Quote:

| cccc did she give a price reduction to make up for the surgery cost? My little guy had his teeth pulled while he was being fixed. It didn't cost much at all. Good luck with your decision. |

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | If you are going to have her spayed regardless, I would think you should repair the hernia and pull the teeth at the same time. Then your little cutie pie would only have to endure one surgery. Give her some hard chew toys like bully sticks so maybe her teeth will fall out. My Jack had double canines when we got him already neutered. He needed to have them removed because his breath was soooo bad. Had planned on the surgery and double checked his mouth and they had fallen out. What a hard decisiion you have to make. I am a softie so I would probably not be able to return her. You came here with your story so we will give you lots of suggestions to make it work for you.

| I am so very sorry you are facing these trials and tribulations with your new Yorkie daughter. I don't have any advice, other than gather all the information you can about what you are dealing with then let your brain talk to your heart. Only you can make the decisions you must face. Although the tapeworm issue is just another "strike against" the breeder, tapeworms can be resolved fairly easily ..... I agree with Margaret, the baby teeth can be removed, she can be spayed and the hernia can be fixed at the same time --- I don't have much experience with lp -- some vets want to jump right in and do expensive surgery -- other vets take a more conservative approach and do surgery when the lp interferes with the dog's mobility and quality of life. Good luck, sweetheart, in my heart of hearts I wish you well.... |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I don't know if this is your first yorkie, but yorkies make many trips to the vet and if you make a commitment it is going to be from the beginning. Personally, I would take the dog to the breeder/seller and ask for some of my money back--10 months is late on puppy teeth and spaying--imho--and fixing the hernia sooner rather than later. If the seller is willing to work with you--maybe her vet will give you and her a better price and you can split the vet bill--or I would return the puppy now. Sounds mean but never get a puppy without a contract--what about a health warranty? LP is heriditary and this lady should stop breeding this line. JMHO. |
