| help with toilet training please Hi, Could any1 help me with toilet training my little male, 5 months called Wilson.. .Hes generally good and goes to the toilet outside when i open door and let him out. However whenever he is left on own and can't get out he will go anywhere. We keep him in large kitchen and he hasn't got a favourite spot, seems to go in a different place evertime. How can i get him to go in one place or on his litter tray when we are not there to let him outside..He is very lively and energetic so don't want to confine him to a crate or a smaller room... Thanks for help Laura |

| Have you tried crating him when you're not home? Put him in a crate that's only big enough for him to turn around and lie down. The theory is that he won't pee in the crate if he has to sit in it and it'll teach him to hold it until you get home. I know you said you don't want to confine him, but it seems to me the only way he is going to learn. You're the boss here and you have to let him know it!!

| I agree. He sleeps the whole time you are gone anyway. Even though he is lively and energetic, it will not hurt him the least bit to be confined in a crate while you are gone. I'm afraid this is the only way you can prevent him from going potty inside while you aren't home. Make sure the crate is only big enough for him to stand up, turn around, and lay down. |

| We finally figured out that Susan made almost all her mistakes between 3:00 and 5:00 in the morning. We just make sure she's crated at that time of night OR sometimes I put her leash on her harness and attach the loop end of her leash to the front of my nightgown and let her sleep on the bed. She can't get away and doesn't try. Now that she's used to not making mistakes, when she's desperate to go out during the day time, instead of just looking for a place in the house, she makes sure she lets us know she wants out. For some reason this 3-5 a.m. trouble spot was really holding back her training. Once we got that licked, the rest of it fell into place. |

| We crate I crate Molly when we are gone and at night. She is so used to it that when we put our shoes on she goes and gets in by herself. When my human kids bug her she so in. I tell them to leave her alone. that is her quiet safe place. She just turned 6 months. I left her for 5 hours yesterday and she didn't have an acciedent. That is the longest I have kept her in except at night. I know it sounds mean but it is the only way I have been able to get her not to go everywhere. Give it a go. You will be amazed.

| Monica.... I would close the door on the kennel at night or else he may go out to go potty on your floor. I keep mine closed as well and Cooper has not ever had an accident in his kennel....thats how they learn to hold it as they dont want to soil where they sleep.....it really works. Good luck. |

Crate training like the others suggest is good. But if you want to train to the pee pad. here is how I did it. I confined them to the kitchen, and put a pad in the various spots where they choose to go. When they were consistently using the pee pads, I started moving them all towards one spot. If they went back to where the pad was befoe I moved it, I sat a bed or toybox over that spot. Eventually I had them down to one pad, and I put that one inside a shallow under the bed storage box. then I installed a doggie door. so now they mainly go outside, but if it is raining, they use the box. | |
