| XCountry by car. Tips? We will be going from PA to AZ this Jan-Feb with "Angel" who will be 8 mo. She has done well in a crate to CT with potty stops every 1-2 hours. I have reserved 4 motels at 500 mile increments who allow pets. We have 2 portable xpens and Angel is potty trained to use indoor pads primarily and grass secondarily. I'm concerned about meals, and tentatively plan on eating takeouts since I'm not sure about leaving her alone in the car or motel for the 30+ minutes needed to eat. Since this is our first multi-day trip for Angel, any suggestions would be appreciated. Mort |

| Before you leave, try feeding her in the car while you're parked at home. At this time you'll be eating your take-outs and want her getting used to eating in the car. We had to do that when we took our round trip to Florida 2800 miles and it worked out fine. Just watch out at some rest area stops, people do not clean up after their dogs so we parked away from the pet area and our 2 girls used their puppy pads. It worked ok for them. They slept most of the way mostly. Be sure to bring a jug of fresh water from home and her favorite foods, toys and/or blanket. Don't under any circumstances leave them alone in the car at ANYTIME. Planning ahead helps and it seems like you've got it together ok. Just make sure her harness and leash are secured at all times so she don't get away and get lost. Have her tags secured to her harness also. Don't forget to bring copies of her health records and if she's microchipped, that information also, just in case. Good luck with your trip ! |

| Take bottled water, different waters can make the little ones sick, have a great tirp, I have found traveling with my pups works out just fine.

| I have a Sherpa bag that I put Adonis in for going in places to eat while traveling. Its airline approved, and has a shoulder strap on it. Its square, and has a lot of venting for air, and even a zipper on top where they can put their heads out of it. I've put Adonis in this many times to go in eating when I didn't want to leave him in the car. Being single and traveling, I've even put him in it to pay for gas, since one time the attendant hollered at me, moved "everyone aside so that lady with the dog could pay and get out, cause dogs weren't allowed in the store." I had him in my arms. I've found traveling some people aren't very pet freindly. Since I've been putting him in the Sherpa, nobody has every said a thing about him being in stores or restaurants with me. I got my Sherpa at Petsmart. I forgot how much it cost, but has been more than worth what I paid. I'm sure it was under 50 bucks. Also since he travels in a car set, I put plenty of food in it for him. Now water is another story, and they do get thristy on trips. I have a small bowl with an airtight lid I use to let him drink from. Our first few 10 hour trips to TX, we'd stop bout every 2-3 hours. Now that he's 5, we've made it fine with one stop, the last 3 times we traveled. |

| We travel extensively with our boyz in our pickup, pulling a fifth wheel travel trailer. We mostly do picnics so that we can all eat together. But since we are on the road for so much in the summer, you can only stand sandwiches for so long. We do go inside to eat sometimes, but ONLY when we can park the pickup where we can see it at all times while we are seated in the restaurant. This makes for some false starts - when we go in and can't sit where we can see the pickup, we have to find another place. Also, since we travel in the summer, the heat is sometimes a consideration. But most of our traveling is in the mountains so the heat is not so much of a problem - except when we get near home (Texas). Good luck, you are smart to plan ahead.

| Excellent suggestions! Thanks for the tips. Angel usually sleeps in the crate and does not get car sick. I'm not clear about the feeding. Do you suggest feeding her before we leave and then each time we eat? We usually "demand" feed her and when she eats is really quite random. It averages out to about 1/2 cup per day. I do not think she will eat at the times we give hetr the bowel. Is it ok to attach a inside the crate and let her eat as desired? Then I could offer her water each time we stop for a potty break (about every 1-2 hours). We do have a Sherpa-like bag and I'm trying to get her introduced to it by throwing kiblets and/or cheerios inside. If she eventually cooperates and allows me to carry her in the bag, how do you keep her quiet in the fast food / chinese/ motel rest.? |
