| Was I lied to? Today after work I stopped in a pet supply store that I don't normally go into. As soon as I walked in I saw a very long row of PUPPY CAGES!! I went over and looked at the dogs and asked the man working there where they get the dogs from and he said from BREEDERS... I asked him why on earth any breeder would sell their puppies to a pet store and he said it was because they couldn't sell them otherwise. I then asked if I were to buy a dog from the store if they had all of the contact info of the breeders and the appropriate paperwork and he said yes. Was this a boldface lie?? Any respectable breeder I've come across would just as soon keep a puppy in their household for its entire life before selling it to a pet store. What are your thoughts? Was this man lying to me? P.S. Thankfully there were no yorkies there, otherwise I might have whipped out the American Express card and immediately taken them away from there!

| There are plenty of "breeders" or puppy mills that sell to pet stores and I'm certain that some probably sell ONLY to pet stores. They FARM dogs in other words. As far as you being able to contact the "breeder" I suppose there may be a few pet stores that have local breeders, but I doubt there are many.

| The breeder I got Rosie from said that she will sell her dogs to a pet store if she can't sell them. She said that she really didn't want to but did not have any other choice if she can't sell them. This was not a puppy mill. She gave me the AKC paperwork for my dog and was a very reliable breeder. I have not had any problems and got two other people to buy her dogs. They too have not had a problem. That said, I still would not buy my dog from a pet store, but the store owner MIGHT not have been lying. |

| I bought a purebred Himalayan cat from a pet store. He came with registration papers, complete with the "breeder" info. He was malnourished, and was taken from his mom way too soon. This kind of puppy mill breeder we can all do without!

| Btw, the breeder that I bought my dog from was not going to breed anymore. She just wanted her dog to give birth once or twice. i Selling them to the pet store was her last resort. Last edited by cheeselover8481; 08-17-2006 at 07:04 PM. |

Once you have taken the responibility to breed regardless if it is 'just one litter or two' , those pups are the breeders responsibility until suitable homes are found even if the pup gets to be 6 months old or more. Moreover, a reputable breeder will always take a puppy back at any time in its lifetime if the original purchaser cannot keep it regardless of the reason. My contract stipulates that clause that will not allow third party sales and none of my puppies can be given to other members of family other than a spouse. If all breeders took responsibility for what they are doing we wouldn't need SPCA's and rescues. If a breeder can't or won't be responsible for their pups, simply don't breed. | |

| Rather than sell to a pet store, why not try dropping the price? We bought a lab/blue tick mix years ago from a reputable breeder. I don't know what her prices were originally, but when we saw her ad, she was selling them for $35. When we went to look at the puppies, she only had two left. She said that she had dropped her price to sell them because she would never sell to a pet store like some do. She originally had 6. Her main concern was finding them good, loving homes. |

| I got my Yorkie from a small family owned pet store that has been in business for more than 50 years where I live. The store I purchased my pup from said that they were personal friends of the woman who had bred the two little Yorkies that they had for sale. A few weeks after I purchased my pup, the papers to register it came to me in the mail. The breeder's name was on the papers - and I contacted her. She said that "yes" -- she was a personal friend of the man who owned the pet store and that he had helped her sell puppies previously. She lives in Montana ----way out in the country and has always had trouble getting people to go that far out (and not get lost) to see the puppies she has for sale. She says that she can usually sell one or two of them, but usually needed help to sell the final one or two. So - she literally drove more than 300 miles to bring them to her friend's pet store so that he could help her find homes for them. She and I have E-mailed one another many times. I have learned about my pup's parents and the fact that this was the 4th and last litter they will be having. I know their weights, colors, personalities, and she has even E-mailed me pictures. So - what can I say. The store I got my pup from was telling the truth. But, again -- this is a small family owned pet store that has been in business for more than 50 years and has a very good reputation -- It isn't one of the larger chain-type pet stores. So - remember - even though you may not believe everyone -- sometimes - people are honest and are telling the truth! Carol Jean |

| pusp I know I am hard nosed about his subject. I have breeder friends who live in remote areas, but none resort to a pet shop..the reason is..there is not enough money on the face of this earth to see our babies sitting in a cage waiting for a buyer to come along. Do the pups stay in the store at night, all alone? What if there is a burglery or fire..this could happen in my home also, BUT at least I am here to do my best to protect them..and another biggy in my book, the store owner is legally bound to sell to anyone, no matter they may have 6 children under 6 yrs, 50 other dogs, live in their car and many other deal killers.. I am too dogmatic, but Yorkies are worth being insane about... Why would a system of referrals not work? A pet shop owner could have a list of breeders, they could refer a buyer to one, the buyer actually goes to the breeder, pet shop owner gets a percentage, no pups in pet shops... JOIN a Yorkie club, they have referral lists for anyone with pups..but they do not charge. No one in a club has to be concerned about not placing pups, members help each other. |

| All I know is that she seem to have cared since she did not sell the smallest dog because she was not sure if the dog would have gotten sick. If she really didn't care she would have sold that dog too. She could have probably gotten more money for that dog because he was so small. She was selling her dogs for $600, so that was pretty cheap for a yorkie. I don't know her whole story, but I don't think she not a good breeder because she was thinking about doing this. I guess she figured that if she can't sell them by Christmas then she probably won't be able to sell them later. I think she did sell all of them though. She had 6 that she was selling and I know she sold 4 of them. |
