The difference between Pet Quality & Show Quality May I should have put this under the Breeder's section.....but I thught it would get over looked? Can some one out there put in plain english, "What the difference is between "Pet Quality" and "Show/Breeding Quality" is? I am aware of the importance of AKC. Registration, Bloodline and Pedigree's. I am just wondering if any one else knows? The actual differences? As far as physical traits etc.?

What I've been taught is that no yorkie is 'perfect breed standard.' But to show you have to come as close as possible. 'Pet quality' is a dog with show faults, over/under bite, wrong colors, wrong coat quality, too big/small, incorrect top line, ect... All I know about 'breed quallity' is that it's a dog that isn't quite 'show quality' but can be used to better the breed and compliments your line. I'm sure someone can explain it better

| Just remember that you can get a beautiful "pet" quality yorkie. Just because they are not show quality does not mean they are not good examples of the breed. Bentley is a pet quality maltese and Mia is a pet quality yorkie, I think both of them are very nice examples of their breeds.

question The standard is your guide. You try to reproduce a dog as close to it as possible. If you are looking at a puppy..first you have to trust the breeder. There is a big difference between a show potential and show quality. A potential is just that, it looks good for the age it is and has the potential to be a show dog. Show quality means IT IS show quality..ring ready, usually a bit older then a potential. There are no 8 or 12 wk show quality Yorkies, only potentials..at 6 months it can be called show quality..adult teeth are in, etc. AND..looks are not everything..they can be a gorgeous potential or ring ready dog and not have the temperment or personality to be a show dog...you might as well pack it in and get something else.

I can't really add to that. Those are wonderful descriptions from some very competent experts. Great question! Pat and Summer: For you, is Show Quality and Breeding Quality the same? I know that's a "loaded question" but I am just curious what you think. I think most show breeders would say they are synonymous because your goal is to strive to "better the breed" but some non show breeders may not agree and will argue that, as long as there are no health issues, the physical traits as defined by the standard are not as important. For example, they may still breed an 8 lb female (bigger than the standard allows) or a male with recessive piebald color genes for example, where a "serious" show breeder may not. Am I right?

question Breed or show quality is in the eye of the beholder. The standard is so plain..like color...but go to a show and you will see a line of various shades of blue, silver, black...ask the exhabitor if they think their Yorkie is blue and most will say, yes. I am harder on a stud..he can produce 100"s of pups, so he needs to be the best. A bitch can be of lesser quality in my opinion. A cobby, square bitch is not always made for breeding, but a long bodied one will not give you the type you want either. All show breeders have bitches who would never get one point in the ring let alone 15. You know what keeps most Yorkies out of the ring? The desire to show and be a showoff...so many lovely Yorks have no animation..they look like a cardboard cut out. JMO..and you are so nice to take the time to listen to my ramblings..but do you know why Yorkies never make the group cut at Westminster? They do not have that terrier spirit like they once did..watch the other breeds of terriers..they are little packages of TNT...ready to show off...that is what I look for, temperment first.

Where did the terrier "spirit" yorkies once had go? Has it been bred out in favor of perfect conformation by some bad breeders? I know that wouldn't make sense because the temperament is so crucial but where did it go?

How does the judge even know if the dog is a male or a female? Do they examine them when they lift their tail? I don't understand unless they know that the male will make someone more money over the long run why they would be prejudiced against females? What do judges and show breeders say is th rational explanation for this subjective and unfair result?
