The standard is your guide. You try to reproduce a dog as close to it as possible. If you are looking at a puppy..first you have to trust the breeder. There is a big difference between a show potential and show quality. A potential is just that, it looks good for the age it is and has the potential to be a show dog. Show quality means IT IS show quality..ring ready, usually a bit older then a potential. There are no 8 or 12 wk show quality Yorkies, only potentials..at 6 months it can be called show quality..adult teeth are in, etc.
AND..looks are not everything..they can be a gorgeous potential or ring ready dog and not have the temperment or personality to be a show dog...you might as well pack it in and get something else.
