| Just got Raisin spayed Hi everyone... I don't post too often, but I think my nerves are a little bit on edge. I got Raisin spayed today... and I've been nervous about it since I made the appointment. I know she's not the first dog to be spayed, but this is the first dog I've ever had, and she is like my baby. There are a few questions I have... I had thought that her vet would give her pain medicine, but they just did the injection and that was it... is that enough?? I asked about more and they said it was unnecessary. But, when we got home she was whimpering, it made me feel so bad to know she was hurting. Now, she seems to be doing better, not whimpering. I think that was the hardest part for me (not raisin) is that I was unable to warn her and she didn't even know what was going to happen... just a bad surprise for the puppies. Another question is that now she seems to be doing a little better, but I've gotten a look at her stitches and they seem awfully big and lumpy, not as flat as i thought it would be... is that normal? Just looks like it will leave a big scar. Don't get me wrong... I am glad that she has come out of everything okay so far, but I just want to make sure that they did everything right. Right now she is so sleepy. Tonight I don't know if it would be better to just let her sleep in her crate or if i should sleep on the floor with her... probably her crate is more safe. Luckily she hasn't tried licking or biting at her stitches, so that is really nice. heh, thanks for listening the ramblings of a worrywart, think I'll go check on my baby now |

| I know exactly how you feel....I felt the same way from the time I made Hobbs' appointment to get neutered until he was 100% well. In my opinion, how she is acting is perfectly normal. The vet told me that it was fine for them to lick their wound, but to watch it to see if it turns red. The vet told me that if the insicion site turned red, to put some Neosporin on it. I think that she would feel more comfortable and safe in her crate. The vet even recommended that we keep Hobbs in his crate until he was well. This prevents them from getting rambunctious and injuring themselves. She is probably still very groggy from the anesthesia. If she is not better by tomorrow, maybe you could just call the vet. Or if she is worse tomorrow than she is today, I would definately take her into the vet. Better safe than sorry, you know? But it sounds to me like everything is normal. Good luck, and keep us posted on how little Raisin is doing! Hope she feels better real soon! |

| It is scary the first time but everything sounds normal to me. None of mine had any pain medicine as they are still very dopey from the surgery. She maybe will eat a little and drink a little water then she will probably sleep the night through. I think she would be happy in her crate (if she is used to one) and you can put it by your bed so if she makes any noises in the night you can hear her. The lumpy, bumpy is the first set of stitches and then the vets close them with either super glue (seriously) or a second set of stitches or staples. Most vets now use the super glue. You just want to watch so it doesn't become to red down there. What works well is newborn onies so she can't lick down there rather than the cone - which scares these little ones. Tomorrow morning she will almost be back to normal but don't let her jump off of the couch or chairs. Let us know how she is doing in the morning.

| Holly and I will be watching your posts with interests,as she gets spayed on Monday. i can relate to how you feel-I have felt terrible since I made the appointment.I'm sure the vet nurse thinks i am a real fruitcase, with all my questions. My friend,'s foxy was spayed about 8 weeks ago.It all went well and her scar now is barely visable! The hardest thing was to stop her jumping about too much while everything healed! Hope it continues to go well-let us know.

| i think just like people all dogs have a different tolerance to pain. my mom's maltese was just spayed and had puppy teeth removed at the same time my little boy had his puppy teeth removed. we were both sent home with pain medicine. her maltese had a tough time and my yorkie acted like nothing had happened. we ended up giving the maltese the yorkies pain medicine (it was the same dosage and everything) so she could stay on it longer. if she's in pain tomorrow i would call the vet and request some pain medication. |

| When Rosi was spayed they put a painpatch on her legg that lasted 4 days, it cost a little more but was worth it, no wimpering plus she had internal stiches.

| Poor little Raisin. According to my vet, many vets do not use pain medication of any kind (other than the general anesthesia). Vets that do pre-operative blood work and provide pain meds following the procedures are more expensive, but definitely worth the extra TLC. Imagine having a hysterectomy and not getting any pain meds following the surgery. Humans would never stand for that and our pets shouldn't have to suffer either!! No one can tell me they hurt any less than we would. Better vets will also keep little ones overnight for observation due to their extra-small size. They do bounce back very quickly so you should see normal activities resume quickly. If she continues to wimper today, I would call the vet immediately and ask for pain medication. The incision may be lumpy, but as it heals should smooth out. Watch for any redness or swelling. Good luck to you both.

| Roxy is in pain! I am so glad to read your post! I thought I was the only one who was freaking out over Roxy getting spayed. She was done yesterday, and she is still in pain. She also got a tumor removed off of her lip, so she has stitches in her lip too. The vet did give her pain meds. We don't use a crate, but we have one in the living room with the door open. I decided to use it at bedtime because I was worried she would jump off of our bed and get hurt! She cried in the crate, so we kept her in bed with us all night. We have been lifting her up on the couch and lifting her off when she wants to get down. I know we sound crazy, but this operation really was a major thing! Her stitches look just like you described Raisins, Bumpy LONG incision, about 3 1/2 inches. It is red around the glue stitches. I hope that is normal. She has a soft cone and doesn't like it. Someone said to use onesies. What about when they have to "go" I guess take it off. Roxy uses a litter box, so I guess the onesie idea won't work?? Roxy is not feeling well today, poor little girl! I can't stand it! I hope Raisin feels better than Roxy does. Roxy's mom, Maria |

| Thanks everyone for the advice and sharing similar stories! That always helps ease my mind a lot. And thanks for explaining how the stitches are done. That makes it appear more normal. Raisin did have the bloodwork done, but still no pain medicine, but hopefully she is just sleeping all that pain away. I read somewhere online that one of the reasons some vets may not give pain meds is that for animals, if they are in pain they know they have to keep themselves still and try to recuperate, and if they have medicine, they can't feel the pain and try more to do normal activities. That makes sense, but it it still hard thinking that the poor babies are hurting. Raisin is doing much better today. Woohoo! She is still very sleepy and still looks a tad uncomfortable, but she's not walking with an arched back like she was yesterday. It was actually a little bit hard to contain some of her energy earlier... but thank goodness for the onesies. My sister ran out to get some this morning for me (she explained it to my mom that she was buying her niece some onesies lol). Raisin is not too used to wearing clothes so they are like kryptonite for her. She stays pretty still when she is wearing it, so she's able to get more rest that way. Last night, I tried to put Raisin in the crate to go to sleep, but she wasn't having that, so we fell asleep on the floor and then I put her in the crate and she was fine. But this morning it seemed like her stitches were bothering her - either hurting or itching, she would lick it and then try to hop away from the pain I think. I didn't want the licking to lead to nibbling so the onesies have worked out very well. Now, she seems fine, and the stitches look good I think. Although they got a little pink earlier when she didn't have the onesie on and was trying to hop up at my legs. But I wonder, does she need to stay pretty inactive (mostly in crate) for the next 9 or 10 days till the stitches come out, or can I let her roam about more freely. We've got stairs and I don't know if that would be too strenuous for her. I'm think thinking it would be. Beachitmom: I hope that Roxy is healing well!! Poor baby having to get spayed plus another surgery on top of that Can she eat okay? Hopefully that will heal as fast as they say the spay does. Although I don't think I'll feel Raisin is healed until she no longer has stitches and can run and jump and play. Initially, I didn't think I'd be that nervous about getting her spayed, but when I had to actually make the appointment and realize what was going to happen, I almost backed out, but I do think it is what I needed to do for her. It is amazing the amount of energy she had and how she wanted to go back to normal today. I hope Roxy bounces back in no time too Please let us all know how she is doing! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Glad to hear she's doing well. I used the onesies on Cali after her surgery until the stitches came out and I didn't comb her because I was afraid of hurting her and she got real matted so I would try and comb her gently. Cali ws very tired for 3-4 days.

| My baby is having surgery Thanks to all of your threads, I feel more comfortable with the hysterectomy that today was recomended by Bonnie's vet. The surgery is on August 7th. I'm very worried because she only weights 4.3 pounds. She sleeps in my bed with my husband and I and I'm sure that there is no other way for her to sleep. Her brother Clyde sleeps with us either. I don't know how to manage that situation during her recovery but still thinking. |

| My little Holly--3 1/2lbs-sleeps with me too and a large cat! When she was spayed, I carefully lifted her up on the bed on her blanket and she slept well. She usually cries in the morning when she needs out,so I just carried her outside and didn't expect her to get up and down on the bed by herself for a few days. During the day she slept in her basket or on my knee as usual. She recovered really well, but expect a couple of sleepy days.Get organised with a collar incase she tries to bite the stitches. Good luck.

| Poopy just got neutered about a week ago too. the vet was good...i'm surprise they didnt give any pain medicine for your baby. poopy's vet gave pain medicine to take home just in case he's in pain later. we did pay extra for blood work and all that stuff... at first i was wondering if that's normal but after hearing about your lil one, i'm so glad that we paid extra. i think that it's worth it to pay a bit more for a better vet visit... when i went to pick him up, he got along with everyone at the vet's office that he barely got excited to see me... i think poopy also has a high tolerance for pain though. he was up and about by that evening. we actually had to try to get him to rest so he wouldnt hurt his wound... as for the scars...poopy's was puffy and big for a while, but now it went down and looks almost normal. hope your baby is feeling better now. poor lil thing. |
