| X-pen Height After buying everything imaginable (or so it seems) for our new yorkie puppy, I'm ready to buy a metal exercise pen today through Petco. Since reading so many posts about these little escape artists, I'm not sure which height pen to buy--Petco has a 24" high and also a 30" high. It could be a real problem if the dog, which will eventually be about 5-6 pounds, should escape. The dog will be in my daughter's college room that also serves as her workroom--she's an art student. Do you think I should buy the 30" one just to be sure or is the 24" one more than sufficient? I would appreciate your thoughts. |

| I just bought one yesterday for my babies to play outside in while I do my yardwork. I checked the petstores first and then I went to a store called "Tractor Supply" and they were 10.00 cheaper. I bought the 36" one (it was the smallest they had) and it is plenty tall enough for even a bigger dog. Thank goodness it is only for the out doors, it is big. I saw the smaller ones set up at the pet store (they were sold out though), and I think you would do just fine with the 24" one, especially since the baby will stay small. If in doubt , go for the 30" one........good luck. |

| This I can give solid advice on! Pixie was 2pounds and 4 ozs when I brought her home. I had a 24 inch Precision Black Powdercoat X-Pen. it was nice. Matched the room and everything! Well, my sweet little Pixie learned how to climb out of it in a matter of 4 days! I was stunned to come home and find her running free! Free to chew the powercords! Free to eat the plants! Free to get into God only knows what dangers my house contains. I was freaked out! I thought it was a fluke... so I put her back in and sure enough, I watched with my own eyes! She climbed right up and over! So I took it back and exchanged it for the 36 inch. That took a few days... but little miss moutian climber mastered that one too! I was so embarresed when I showed up back at the pet store with my TINY DOG and my HUGE GATE for yet another return. The manager laughed and said that he had to give her credit! She was some dog! I ended up going with a Precision crate. The BIG one, you know the kind you get for Mastiffs and Great Danes. That is her play yard now. It has a top! And a nice thick plastic pan that I can wash off, it saves the carpet! And I never have to worry about her getting out ever again! It has two doors so it is easy to clean out! It also folds down and is portable like the gate was, It even has a handle. And if you compare the amount of play space... the crate has 1 square foot less than the pen did.... a fair trade for the peace of mind I'd say! And it was like 90 bucks online at petco.com with free shipping. Her Yorkie sized crate fits right inside it! And her pee pad and food and water and toys. Am I saying you have to get a crate? NO.... but I am saying... Dont underestimate your Yorkie! Go for the bigger one!

| Thank you all for your opinions. Kathryn, your story scares the heck out of me because the dog could easily get into my daughter's art stuff if it escaped--something we have to avoid at all costs. Unfortunately, she doesn't have the physical space for such a large crate. A while ago, I think someone posted something about placing a top on the x-pen to keep their little rascal in place. Now I'll research that. I'll keep you posted on what we eventually decide to do. I think I've spent more time researching paraphernalia for this little puppy than when I had my first child! | Some come with a door (gate) to open and some do not. The first one we bought was 36" and no door. I could not reach over to pick Mia up. We took it back and traded for a 30" and a door. I am so thank full we got the door. When she isn't in there I leave the door open with a puppy pad inside and she goes in for her potty time. Took to it right away. I would go for the middle height, 30". Depending on how big the puppy gets there is a chance with the 24" that he or she will master jumping out. Believe me I have two yorkies and they love to jump and can do it well. Telea Zoe' and Mia |

| yup, some yorkies learn how to climb and no amount of height will keep them in. The 30 " one worked for us but you may want to go for one of those large metal crate if the pup will be in a life threatening situation if it gets out. They are more of a pain, not as easy to fold up and transport but will keep the pup safe. I had a friend who put two gates (one on top of the other) to keep her 3lb. Yorkie in a room. She still got out sometimes!!!!!!!!!! |

| Thanks everyone for your advice. I've just ordered the 30" high exercise pen from JB Wholesale with a door. As it turned out, they had the best price, and I'll have it next week. Because we have deer in our area, I often wrap a heavy nylon mesh around some of our shrubs. I think I will secure that on top of the pen with ties. Hopefully, the pen will be escape proof--the mesh fabric keeps deer out; let's hope it keeps puppy in. Thanks again for all your help. Last edited by Madison Avenue; 03-10-2006 at 02:37 PM. |

| ok.... your going to laugh and I wish I had gotton a picture of it.... My husband thought that he was going to outsmart this little beast. He got a refridge box and cut it to fit the top of the 36 inch X-Pen. He poked holes every six inches and used cable ties to attach it to the top of the pen. He stood back and looked at his work and grinned like the coyote from that cartoon... the one with the road runner. Well he thought for sure that he would come home that afternoon for lunch and find a defeated Pixie sulking in her X-Pen..... Instead, he walked in the front door and looked up the stairs only to see Pixies smug little mug shaking with excitment! It was like.... Daddy's home!!!!!! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Didn't Work!!!!!!! So put those ties close together! lol I'm not trying to scare you..... But honestly, Pixie gave us heart attacks everyday for two weeks straight! One bite into a powercord and she would have been toast! I can't even stand the thought! She is worse than having my human children... she gets into so much more...

| If you ordered your Ex pen from JB you can also order a top that goes right on top of it. It was $50.00 I think and left me with alot of peace of mind.........

| I would definitely get at least 36". Lucy can clear that one too! I used it at my parents house & we took a quilt & zip tied it to the top as a cover! haha!

| Wow! jumping over 24" and even 30" ? I have a 30" one and honestly its way too tall! Mine will do fine with even something that's 18" tall. The problem is not jumping for mine but sliding the bottom latch until he opens it! So now I put those plastic ties that can only come off if you cut them off. Have you seen your dog actually jump the 30" I'm still in shock lol Genie,Cookie & Lola |

| Reading about all your escape artists makes me smile. We haven't picked up the puppy yet. We are expecting to do that this Thursday night. I'll keep you informed about his behaviors or misbehaviors, as the case may be. I know it will be fun! Thanks again for all your good advice. |

| Our Little Houdini After Ruby escaped via our puppy gate, we thought a 36" height ex-pen would do the trick. Not so. She escaped the first day! I came home the second day to see that my husband had wrigged up the video camera to catch her in the act. She jumped about half way up and climbed the rest of her way out. We ended up buying a tarp and small bungies to put over the top. She hasn't escaped since. Good thing -- we thought we were going to have to change her name to Houdini! |
