I am not JUDGING, I have lied to get medicle care just want to make sure were talking about the same thing.
Everybody lies occasionally and we all judge whether we realize it or not. But we all do lie or enhance the truth, especially when terrified our little one is hurting badly - or we ourselves are, (as you said you did for whatever reason),maybe seriously ill/injured but the tech or intake nurse or receptionist might not be qualified enough to triage all waiting dogs professionally enough to put my dog whom I'm convinced is very injured or ill first.

In a true emergency at the hospital E.R., it's not first come, first served, first served is based on those professionally assessed by triage to be in extremis, the sickest, most severely injured.

I'd do the same thing Joan did if that's what it took to get my dog that was acting like Cody was immediate help! Its up to US to speak up for our dogs, who can't cry for help, and if those others didn't speak up for their babies because they weren't as fearful or worried, so be it.

What if Cody were bleeding internally, blood pressure rapidly dropping, badly in need of emergency surgery to save his life and sweet Joan quietly waited in line and little Cody died in her arms while waiting in line in his proper mommie's arms? For all Joan knew, that was the case and receptionist/techs rarely have the skill set/training to properly assess that situation. A mom will do ANYTHING to get her little one urgent care - whatever it takes, ask for forgiveness later, if necessary. I'm with Joan on this one!!!

I think at some point we have all exaggerated a little to get care. I told the vets office that Penny was eating her paws when she needed an appointment which obviously she wasn’t eating her paws but it got the point across that it was a big issue. Vet techs and vet assistants are different then receptionists and we are taught what is an emergency and what isn’t but we were also taught if the owner feels it an emergency then you consider it an emergency. I’m going to guess that one tech was just trying to be on the lazy side and didn’t want to do the work. Sadly there are those kind of people in the field. I remember Callie’s first trip to the ER vet at 2am because she would not put any weight on her front leg and the vet was so rude and acted like we woke him up.

Exaggerations or lies, call it what you will, I call if lying if we aren't 100% truthful & I'll blatantly lie if I think it gets my possibly grievously ill/injured family member, be they skin or fur, seen immediately for a quick professional triage and physical eval. But I believe God & society forgives a lie told once, twice in a lifetime under these circumstances by a very scared & worried caregiver whose motives are pure.

I applaud your vet tech teacher for teaching you the rule that if the owner thinks their pet has an emergency, you must consider it one, too!

Less experienced techs or receptionists w/o much intake experience just don't have the years of training, experience to properly assess an excited owner's often piecemeal, hurried history of their often excited or lethargic dog's present condition as to whether that dog is at risk of losing life or limb, whatever unknown poison he's swallowed rapidly working or his bronchitis quickly becoming double pneumonia, etc., compared to a receptionist, inexperienced vet tech with a few months of vet tech/assistant training.

And sometimes even dogs in the gravest of conditions can briefly rally, perk up due to adrenaline rush by feeling ill/injured, scooped up & hurried to the vet by an overly-excited owner w/ all of the scents, sounds, sights, energy of a vet's office, thinking the dog is fully oriented and alert, thus can't be dealing with an emergent issue. Of course I realize crying wolf too often will cause unwanted repercussions but thankfully most dog caregivers don't have to face this type of terrifying situation once, twice in a lifetime.

That’s what happened with Callie. She started walking fine in the ER office but I pushed for X-rays and nothing was found but as soon as we got home she was limping again. We went to our vet the next day who actually examined her and found a spot that hurt her and made her cry. Ended up being a soft tissue injury that required a specialist. Her front shoulder was over extending when she landed from a jump. Luckily that office was bought out by a different company and got better vets by the time Joey and Ollie had their ER visits.

Ya gotta do what it takes to make 'decision-makers' understand your concerns and worries and seriousness of situation. No one knows our animals like we do and if we believe there is an urgency happening, trust us! We need to do what it takes to get our pups help when WE know they need it! As always, cuz she is soo dang smart and insightful, I am 100% with Matese.

Matese - I am so glad Cody is doing well. I would have done the same thing you did about getting an appointment. I have done it myself for my own health issues because I needed to be seen right away. We do what we have to for our babies.

Just a question - is your vet an emergency vet or just open 24/7 365? My emergency vet you can just go to without an appointment and be seen? I was wondering if the appointment thing was new for Covid? However, my first choice would always to go to my current vet as they know my babies and have all their medical records.

I hope Cody continues to improve it is so hard when our babies are sick. Sometimes I think it is harder on us mentally than them

Thank you for the well wishes.

My vet is a 24/7 365 clinic, guess you can say just opened 24/7 365. For client ER my vet asks that you call before coming so they get a heads up of what's wrong, of course if my dog breaks a leg or if it's life threatening no call is necessary, they don't give you an appt. for emergency, they just tell you to come in. My vet is the only 24/7 fully staffed / equipped ER with-in 150 miles, so they are always busy. There are many walk in's, it's basically the clients that call first, now with this pandemic I don't know how they are handling walk in's.

Hope your babies are doing well. And yes, I agree, sometimes it is harder on us then them.

Default Update on Cody's vet follow up

Cody had his follow up this past Friday, 9/4. It has been down hill since then with medications. The herb meds Cervical and Double P II was originally prescribed for onecapsule twice a day, 2 days on all the meds he had bad diarrhea with a small amount of blood. I called my vet, she reduced the Cervical and Double P II to Cervical once in the morning and the Double P II once in the evening, and gave me Metronidazole to stop the diarrhea. That was working out, stool had form, no more blood but was sticky.
The Metronidazole was finished on 9/1, on 9/2 diarrhea started, 9/3 diarrhea was worse. 9/4 his follow up appt. was for 5:30 PM. I had written a note to my vet about the diarrhea returning so I was given a 2-week supply of Metronidazole again. When the tech bought him back to the car, she tells me if he is not in pain I can stop the Rimadyl as that causes loose stool and may help cut down on the diarrhea. Cody was on it for 11 days, I decided to stop giving it to him since he appeared to be in no pain while he was on it.
The nx day Sat. the 5th I gave no Rimadyl, gave him Metronidazole, Cervical and Double P II as prescribed, his evening poop was diarrhea. Sun, the 6th, diarrhea was getting worse, Mon. The 7th really loose diarrhea by evening. Mon. the 7th diarrhea same very loose at least no blood in it. Last night I feed him, he gets a canine Dermal support ¼ tsp sprinkled over his food, been getting this 6 years, it’s a supplement. He refuses it, now for my dog to not eat, there is something wrong. So I give him a bowl without the supplement, he is hesitant and walks away. 30 minutes later he eats it, but I can see he’s not happy with it but he was hungry.
This morning his poop was liquid and he would not eat. His food was down 4 hours and he still had not eaten.
My vet is not coming in this week until Friday (there are two other vets there one I know for years and I don’t like her at all and do not trust her in diagnosing, many years ago she changed one of my girls meds which caused my baby to have a seizure, I was working, I don’t know if she had seizure’s while I was working. As soon as the seizure was over I called the vets office, told them what just happened, told them I didn’t know if it was her first one or if she more while I was at work, the tech told me that vet should not have changed the meds. to Prednisone, he said bring her in right away. In a snow storm at 7:30PM with white knuckles I am rushing her in for ER where she was kept overnight for observation. For this reason I don’t want to ever use that vet again, the 2nd vet is a new one, because of the pandemic I have not seen this vet, again, I would prefer to not use him.) So at 9AM I send my vet an email about this, also wrote I was not going to give Cody any of the meds until I heard back from her. Cody was crying to eat yet he wouldn’t touch his kibble, he took one out of the dish and left it in the living room floor. This is a new bag I opened last night when he wouldn’t eat the kibble with the supplement on it, exp. Date is 2021 so it’s a fresh bag.
I boiled a chicken cutlet, made rice and offered him that, he gobbled it up, I put 2 tbsp of broth in his water because he has not been drinking his regular amount of water, he drank ½ his bowl.
When I sent the email to my vet I was extremely upset and scared, if my dog refuses to eat there is something wrong with him.
I gave him no meds this morning. About 1PM I took him out to the deck, he makes a small amount of poop, diarrhea but the end part appeared to be starting to take form, I will know better when he poops again. I left his bowl of kibble down, he ate the chicken and rice about 10AM, from 10 to 1PM he picked at the kibble, he had a lot of chicken and rice so he couldn’t have been very hungry but at least he was picking and eating a kibble or two. I am not as scared and worried now as I was before he ate the chic / rice. The vet has not replied to my email so far, it was her birthday 9/4 the day of his follow up, she may be out of town for BD and holiday mini vaca IDK. What I do know is, he is staying on the chic/rice, I am not giving him meds. If I have not heard from my vet by Friday I will call the office and tell them what went on and what I have been doing.
Cody’s spirits have lifted since he ate, maybe it’s also from holding back on the meds. I am now concerned about not giving him the Cervical and Double P II, the tech was adamant about keeping him on it until the next follow up which is on 9/18. I pray I am not doing him more harm but, I cannot let this diarrhea continue.

Poor Cody. If they are herbs they are not real medicine just like support medicine so he should be fine without those. Those probably upset his system. I hope he gets better. I read this an although from 2017 I don’t thing I would give those herbs again but that’s just my opinion https://www.veterinarypracticenews.c...chinese-herbs/

My vet is big on these Chinese Herbs, she's been using them for years, I have confidence in her choices. She would never put an animals life at risk. Ya know, when the tech brings your dog back to your car, there is much excitement, dog is going nuts. The tech adamant about keeping him on the two herbs, I can't remember her exact words because Cody was crazy wild climbing on my chest, shoulders, in my face. I was trying to control him while the tech was telling me why the herbs were so important to continue.
I fed Cody chic/rice last night, again he licked his bowl clean, throughout the day the nibbled at his kibble, by end of night he ate about 1/4 cup of it.
This morning I gave him his kibble, he ate it with no hesitation, good sign that his stomach is feeling better, at 9 I'll give him some chicken and rice. I am now waiting for him to make his first poop so I can see if the diarrhea is improving.

I am now concerned with holding back on those herbs did I take 10 steps back on his neck and back recovery. Eliminating that diarrhea was my primary concern.
Thanks for that link.

Again, Cody and Piper and big appetites! I would definitely stop the meds; maybe just give the little Codiak Bear and nature a chance to work at this time. He has to eat to heal and in needs to process what he eats in order for it to help.

I am so very sorry you're going through this, nothing worse. But he's a tough little guy and his eating is a really good sign and sometimes they know better than we what works for them.

My comments are based strictly on my feelings and nothin' more than that!

So sorry to hear that sweet Cody is still not fully on the mend! Tyrone's repeated colitis attacks when he was younger were severe, and there were times when we were unable to give him even his meds to treat the nausea. For whatever reason, his stomach is not nearly as sensitive now, but we are VERY careful not to introduce new foods/treats...even on an "only this once" basis. It simply is not worth the potential days of problems which may follow. There were times that he would not eat for prolonged periods when he was not feeling well, chicken and rice included, and it was scary!

Hopefully you will get a chance to get your regular vet's advice on how to progress today. You trust her, and she knows little Cody. Hang in there, and let us know how you both are doing after she gets back to you. You are in my thoughts! (((hugs)
