| A couple of questions about our 8 month-old Yorkie Jasmine (our Yorkie) is very hostile toward strangers and other dogs. Is this typical? By the way, I'm actually glad that she is this way with strangers as I know there are some lowlifes out there that would steal her, if they could. When we bought her we were told that she was a "Yorkshire Terrier". It seems that she is some derivative called a "Silky Terrier". We don't really care, one way or the other, but her coat does seem nice. How trainable are they in terms of them being off-leash and recalling when commanded to do so? I get the impression that it's "not very". Ha ha. Anyway, Sammy (a rescue) and Jasmine say Happy Thanksgiving. Our other GSD, Fiona, was too grouchy to be in the picture. She's 11 and "tolerance" and "inclusion" really isn't her thing. |

| I don’t think it’s typical. Mine love love love other people and they like other dogs. Penny will drive you nuts she loves people so much lol. Silky and and Yorkies are different due to other issues not coats but she looks like a yorkie. Most dogs honestly should never be off leash if not in a fenced in area but especially not a terrier. They are very trainable. My oldest boy is a trick dog with several titles and my puppy is an AKC star puppy. Two right now have their Canine Good Citizen. Smart dogs just a bit stubborn.

| Mine are very friendly to people once they have time to get to know them. They are never aggressive or unfriendly, just sometimes shy at first. Once they know you...lol you will have to fight them off! They will jump onto laps and kiss unless told not to. They do not interact with many dogs (unless we are travelling with them they stay on our property), but they enjoy play dates on our lanai with the maltipoo next door. When they do see other dogs (e.g. at the vet office) they never growl or act unfriendly. All three of my dogs love to run free in the pool screen, and they will come when called, but I would NEVER allow them off leash outside.

| I would not say a hostile yorkie is typical for the breed. I feel it's about the socialization they had when they are puppies. Every puppy I ever had yorkies and other breeds as soon as they had their last vaccine I had them out meeting ppl and dogs. My girls loved all animals and ppl.I now have a rescue yorkie, got him when he was 2.5 yo,he's now 7.5 yo,he is not dog friendly because he was not socialized around dogs when he was a puppy but, he loves ppl. Having a dog that is not dog or ppl friendly can be an issue. Your baby looks like a yorkie to me. And they are very trainable, my kid know lots of commands and several tricks that I taught when he was 2.5 yo. With terriers training sessions can only be 5 to 7 minutes long, after that they loose interest, so teach one command at a time, no more then 7 minutes through out the day and reward with lots of praise and a treat when he gets it right. I would never leave a yorkie off leash, all terriers have a high prey drive, if they see a squirrel, chipmunk, bird they will be chasing it down. Unless you have a very well trained yorkie that is not distracted by what's going around him and comes on recall I would not let him off leash you may never get him back. Your baby is still a puppy, obedience classes can work wonders with unfriendly pups.

| NEVER ever let a Yorkie off leash. Gidget will chase anything that moves--a leaf, a piece of paper caught up in a breeze, a blade of grass that she sees moving. |

| I agree with the socialization. I carried Bon Bon out with me to meet as many people as safely possible starting as soon as I brought him home from the breeder. He has no trouble meeting new people. He exercises caution meeting new dogs. When he is out in public, he is always leashed. Always. |

Never let your yorkie off leash, either others will see her as prey, (once saw a fox chasing a yorkie, but didn't catch it and the owner was able to grab the yorkie) or your yorkie will see those cute little woodland creatures as prey and try to hunt them. Even if they are well trained, I just wouldn't risk it. | |
