| Gidget is hiding from me Right now, Gidget is hiding under the bed. She hates to be messed with for any grooming, etc. That's why I take her to the groomer when something needs to be done. I take her every 3 months for complete groming session but as needed for her nails to be cut and to cut out the goobers from drainage from her eyes. Last night, I decided to try to get rid of them myself. Got the Vaseline out and rubbed it on either side of her nose and she fought me the whole time. When I picked up the Vaseline to put it in the closet, she saw me pick it up and ran under the bed. This morning, I got a warm soft washcloth to remove them. Well, the fought me the whole time but finally did get some removed. When she got down from my lap, she immediately ran under the bed. Around lunch time, we left to pick up some dry cleaning and then to Food Lion to pick up some ingredients for party mix. She was just fine. When we got home, walked in the front door, she immediately headed for under the bed. When she comes out at her choosing, the will not get even close to me. I picked her up and she squirmed so much I had to let her down and she immediately got as far from me as she could get. What should I do? Any help will be greatly appreciated! |

| Tried that. No luck. She wouldn't come to me for the treat. I left it on the floor and she took it AFTER I left the room. |

| You might have to block the bed to start with so she can't go under it. Slowly begin making positive associations with the things she has been programmed to run away from. Jackson used to run when he saw me getting the toothbrush out. I began by sitting on the floor with him in a spot where he was sort of "cornered" (not in a bad way. Just no escaping). I would do tricks with him etc and things that he got treats for. Then I'd bring the toothbrush with me the next time. I'd do the tricks again and give treats and then show him the toothbrush and give another treat. Then I'd hold the toothbrush up near his face, give treat. Then I'd lift his lip up, give treat. Now it's to the point where I've basically re-programmed him into thinking going to that spot is a fun and good place to be. He willingly goes there even though he KNOWS he's going to get his teeth brushed which he hates, but he knows some good things are going to happen too.

| Awww.... Assuming you think it's safe under the bed, perhaps leave her there to enjoy some alone time. Would it send the wrong signal to put some water and a treat on a tray and place all so that she has access to it? |

| I wonder if it's the Vaseline she found aversive? To clean Bella's eye boogers, we use saline solution to soften them for 2 or 3 minutes, and either comb them out, or pick them out with our fingers. Maybe the Vaseline smells bad? Then again, we've been bathing Bella since she was a puppy, so maybe she's used to it.

| Gidget has never liked anything done around her face. I can brush her back, sides and tummy but don't dare get the brush anywhere near her face. The groomer is less than 1/2 mile so sometimes I can just drop in and have her nails cut. She doesn't seem to have any trouble with the groomer doing these things so maybe I'll just keep on letting her do it for me. Less stress on me and Gidget. |

| I had a girl if I raised my voice to her she would get insulted and go under the bed and pout. No amount of me begging, treats, fav. toy would coax her out. I gave up and ignored her, kinda turned the tables so to say. Dogs are forgiving, she will come to you in her time, she will forgive you. If it were me, I would just ignore her, no fussing, no coaxing. She will eat and drink water when she's hungry and thirsty, dogs will not starve them selves. I use cotton balls with warm water to soak the goobers, then comb them out. Gidget sounds like a lil sweetie pie, sometimes we just gotta be tough on ourselves and stay strong but firm for their own sake.

| Hi think girls can hold the longest grudges, Callie does with me not to that extent though.

| Gidget pouted all day yesterday. My son came to see me around 6:00 and she was all over him--wanting to be petted, etc. Would have nothing to do with me. Went to bed around 10:30 and she cuddled right up and went to sleep like nothing had happened. Will try the cotton ball soaking next time and see if that works. When I put the Vaseline on, she paced the floors for about an hour. Had never seen her do that but she absolutely walked the floors. Her anxiety level was sky high. Don't know if I want to put her through that again. Still have the option of letting the groomer do it for me. I'm not there so she doesn't associate the experience with me. Can't stand it when she won't have anything to do with me. Had never experienced it to that degree before now . |

| Me, too. Can't stand it when she's all out of sorts. When Gidget ain't happy, Mama ain't happy. |
