I wonder if it's the Vaseline she found aversive? To clean Bella's eye boogers, we use saline solution to soften them for 2 or 3 minutes, and either comb them out, or pick them out with our fingers. Maybe the Vaseline smells bad? Then again, we've been bathing Bella since she was a puppy, so maybe she's used to it.
