Are you opposed to crate training because it is pretty common on here? I do not crate train mine but I used a playpen when they were little and I use an xpen now.

Changing the subject a bit I know your babies are services dogs. How did you get them certified. How long did it take and where do they need to be taken. I know you had mentioned how to go about this during our Katrina threads. I am now wondering about doing this.

the only time these poor babies come out is before and after work.

I really think that instead of enphasizing of how much money she spent to make this kennel visually atractive she should have taken that money sold her house and bought one with bigger square footage to accomadate her dogs on a daily basis. In a more humane way.

There's a HUGE difference in Crate TRAINING and LIVING in a CRATE/Cage.....

I'm not commenting on the conditions.... but I don't think Crate Training is what they're doing in that Kennel.

Stacked cages, no matter how large or small -- presents the appearance of a puppy mill. The only facts that I can be sure of is that the folks here have a whole bunch of stacked cages. I would have to "trust" that any words they speak are true and honest and not just advertising hype and I am simply not that tusting. In order to convince me that all is well, I would visit the kennel multiple times unannounced and see how I am greeted and if I am allowed to visit the furkids.

With all those cages stacked on top of one another it looks like a puppymill to me also.

Thats terrible there being treated like rabbits a hamster has a bigger cage than that its just terrible they should be reported them poor yorkies it a puppymill

i am completely AGAINST all crates in general. But also, i am overreacting a little, i know sometimes you have to. I feel bad putting my little girl in a 4'x4' pen while im out and she has PLENTY of room in that!!!!

I was at first a bit upset with the conditions of this kennel, thinking Oh gosh these poor dogs live in kennels, but then I needed to rethink this. The kennel is beautifu, Are the dogs just there during the 8 hours that she works?? Unless we know how she handles this, we need to keep our angry low key. I have bred and will breed more in the future, My three dogs have the whole house to roam around except when I'm at work and my mother is not home (which is 1-2 days a week) They (the 2 younger ones) sleep in a CAGE, Yes a cage! (you can call it what you will, but in reality its a cage. The only reason why they are in there is because of chewing and potty training, and in the future when Petey is mature to stop unwanted breeding. I don't feel its cruel, I just asked my dogs "who wants to go into their ROOM and take a picture, and all three (even Bell who is never in the cage) climbed in.. SO in my opinion I'm not sure if I think nice big cages are cruel!??! If they are in there for just a few hours a day, it becomes home and not a punishment..

This is this womans business - plain and simple. At least (it appears in the pictures) that she keeps her "stock" in better conditions then alot of mass breeders do. If you look close at the pictures you are going to see more breeds than Yorkies. I see some type of outside purebred hound dogs, pom and a peke.

I agree ..she has to cage them this way to keep them safe.
It you let this many dogs run loose while you are not at home..you may come home to dead or injured dogs.
Not all dog get along..
You could not keep up with who fathered who. If you just let everyone run together.
I'm sure she is working to pay off her kennel and the amount of dogs she has. The crates she uses looks like the large crates, and she has a large outside run.
Everything look nice and clean.
I would not call this a puppymill place.
In fact
I think she has a very nice set up.
From My understanding if she is USDA she can not house dogs in her house.
Here is a pic of my dogs room .This is a room off my living room.
It is a 13x12 room ..3 pens 4x6 foot ea. and 7x12 play area.
My outside run is about 12x30 foot.
My dog are in this room if I am going to be gone for several hours, if I have to clean..etc

I do the same thing with my puppy, because when I am at school and nobody is home to take her out, she goes in her 'bedroom' (cage).

I'm not saying anything about the conditions because it looks clean, but I will say that I don't agree with this. They don't live in her home...I agree with Stewiesmom, if they're being kept in a different building, they're probably USDA licensed which means that they're not allowed in the home. My questions is this, How do they get any socialization with people if they're in cages? How do they get love from the people?

The only way I've ever seen a dog really housebroken is by crate training. They are dogs, they will adapt! I leave mine in his crate except for when we are playing or when he is eating. I do not let him run around the house when I'm not watching. You should be able to crate train a dog within a month if you are consistant. There will always be accidents, but your dog should have it down pretty solid.

As for the whining and barking, yeah, they will. I always say NO loudly when he starts, and if he continues I ignore him or hit the top of the kennel. He gets the hint, and if not, I ignore. They wear themselves out.

Also, with kennel trainning, you have to make sure they only have enough room to turn around and lay down, or they'll go in one end and lay on the other.

Their crate is a place where they can learn to relax and sleep and be calm. A lot of pet owners don't like leaving their dogs crated, but it doesn't hurt them, and it actually does them a lot of good. It produces well-trained, calm dogs.

Like I said this is not how I do things with my dogs but I don't think it is considered abusive or wrong.
