| Microchip Removal After months of varied diagnostics and treatments, we along with the vet have come to the conclusion that a bald spot and spreading hair loss is a reaction to our 2.5 year old, 4 lb 5 oz female yorkie's ID microchip. She will have it removed this next Friday. If you have had this done or have any wisdom or advice about pre-care, post-care, etc. I'd love to hear it. (The debate about cause is over and the decision has been made, so please no debate about the chip! It has to go.) |

| That seems so rare but I guess that kind of stuff happens ocassionally. Had the chip migrated? I'm guessing it will require stitches or adhesive stuff they use so keeping her from scratching it is pretty important. I will be interested in you keeping us updated on this. I wasn't a huge fan of chips for my first yorkie who is now 10 but decided to get them for my younger two. I had never heard of issues like this. Luckily it didn't happen to my two.

Her chip did migrate from between her shoulder blades down her side right above her leg. The reactions are not always reported and are not as rare as I thought once I started doing research, but you are right the majority of dogs do not have a definitive reaction. She had some generalized hair thinning that we think was due to a seasonal winter thing or laying on the heater vent (she loves warmth) and triggering shedding. Melatonin cured that quickly. And then she also had a definitive bald spot about the size of a silver dollar. Scrappings, blood tests, ointments, antibiotics and temaril-p were all tried, including a 30 day course to rule out resistant infection. But when the temaril-p was stopped, each time the hair around the chip fell out in clumps. The corticosteroid and antihistamine were just enough to suppress the reaction. We tried everything to save the chip! But constant steroids isn't a good choice. So, here we goooo................

| Progress report Our pup did get her chip removed last Friday. The procedure was quick and only required one stitch. They did have to shave a spot, which is too bad because now we have even more hair to grow back! The vet put her on a short course of antibiotic to prevent infection. On Saturday we had to take her into the on-call clinic because the area had become quite red. The vet said there was no issue, the stitch had just pulled a bit and the redness was likely due to her sensitive skin reacting to the razor. We were overly cautious, but after months of treatment we didn't want to let our lack of experience or a nonchalant attitude let something important not get treated. The surgery was a little harder on her than I anticipated given the size of the wound! No problems with anesthesia but she did not feel good for a couple of days. She kept giving me that "something hurts" sad look that just tugged at my heart. She's a lot spunkier now and we have to watch that she's not trying to scratch. She can't get all the way to the stitch but she gets close and impacts below it where it's shaved. I had trimmed her nails up nice and short and filed them smooth before the surgery, so there's not much nail there to worry about. She gets her stitch out on the 21st. Vet said we can do it, but I will have them take a look anyway. The first couple of days after the surgery she lost a lot of hair in the area around the wound But that has stopped and we already see some hair sprouting - like a beard growing. I figure given our experience it will take about 6 months for the hair to grow out all the way. That will make this a 1 year saga! Until then, she can channel my brother with a little comb-over to cover the spot We are cautiously optimistic that this will stop the constant irritation and hair loss in that area. Finally, the vet gave us the chip which is still active. I am looking for a tag collar that I can sew the chip into. I have ordered an embroidered collar with our contact information on it for her to wear. She's not a fan of tags and collars but I am hoping that as this area clears and there is less constant irritation that she will learn to accept a collar so she'll always have ID on. For walks she wears a harness with her tags, but she won't be wearing that for a while until this spot heals. If we have no choice, we'll put a little t-shirt on under her harness. Thanks for checking in! |

| Glad for the update. Did they not give her any pain meds? After every surgery always ask for pain meds. If you have her info on the collar there really is no need for the chip on the collar plus no one would probably think to scan the collar. Can't wait to hear if the chip removal fixes the issue or not.

| A pretty pendant Quote:
I also ordered an acrylic tag with her petlink # on it so if for some reason the info on the collar doesn't reach us, someone could go through petlink where they have back up contacts. Her original petlink tag is a bit faded. We keep hands-on tabs on her, but I just want to be as careful as possible in case ever she would find herself out in the big world on her own. I'm hoping an acrylic tag is better tolerated than her aluminum tags that she really dislikes. Maybe if we convince her it's a beautiful pendant that doesn't jingle she'll wear it with pride. lol

| Collar Conundrums Quote:
When our pup was little somehow after the collar was on and safely snug, she would somehow get her lower jaw under the collar and then be unable to recover. It was not safe. And with tags on, she would just be beside herself trying to bite them and pull them off. We tried a breakaway cat collar and sure enough she would get her jaw in and it would unlatch. Safer but didn't improve her ID. As a result, we put her tags on her puppia harness and she went collarless and chipped. We didn't need noise to find her when she was little as it's just two of us now and she just kind of stayed with us. Her collar arrived today and we promptly put it on her with lots of praise. So far, so good. We will only put it on when we are right with her until her stitch is completely healed since we don't want her to scratch at the collar in the area removal. Time will tell.

| My two boys don't wear their collars unless they are going out of town, to the vet, or to the groomers. Zeus is okay with his, but Perseus has chewed two rabies tags to pieces -- you literally could not tell what they were. We had to have them reissued. He tries to chew Zeus's tag as well. He is a chewy little fellow. Their microchips have not caused them any problems, thankfully. I'm glad your baby is okay now and hope the hair grows back! |
