Need your expert advice again.... Cooper is testing my patience. He is so darned good, but we have a new thing going on now. I posted earlier about Coopers teeth and since then he has been a different dog. He is spunkier, eating better and really showing his true personality I think. We just adore him! I thought we had conquered his potty training and that it was a done deal, but now a new thing. He learned that he can jump off the bed. I don't want him to because he was diagnosed with the knee problems they get, but it's impossible to make him stop at night. We have had 3 "accidents" at night this week. I only know he has jumped down when I hear a small rough bark that he wants back up... arghhhhh. He is just going on 10 months old. He knows what "do you have to go potty?" means. Short of tethering him to the bed does anyone have any suggestions? He has never been kenneled. I could shut the bedroom doors, but he usually pee's right at the base of the bed. Normally the will wake me up with a touch of his nose and paw and we go outside, but now........ I'm not coming up with a solution.

buy a set of stairs for the bed. amazon carries them. Train him to use them. If he has to go at night then put a pad down where he goes.

If you are doing strict outdoor training, make sure Cooper has a potty break before bedtime, and you may have to get up earlier to do one in the morning. My boys are early risers, 5 am. Although they use pads, I have to get up to take care of poopies. I think Teddy learned to do that so that I will make breakfast early.

I had the same issue with my last yorkie. She didn't have potty issue but she would bark or do this wack-a-mole thing until I woke up to lift her back up in bed. I bought some steps and once she was trained.....I was able to get a good night sleep. Training her to go up was easy but going down took a little extra work because I think she would forget to use the steps. Every time she jumped off the bed, I would put her back on the bed and put chicken on each step to get her to go down.....I did this repeatedly until she started going down the steps on her own. After, that she never jumped off the bed again. | |

thanks so much for the advice I really appreciate the advice! Cooper has never used a pee pad. I go out with him every time. He does wake me most nights to go potty. I usually go out with him at 10:00 pm for the last time of the day and then he usually wakes me around 3am or 4. They we get up around 6 am. I thought we had this licked. The only change has been that we go to the lake each weekend now. He loves it there and we have a runner right outside the camper for him to be outside. He will roll and play in the grass, watch the kids and other dogs and bask in the sun. I'm wondering if that has something to do with it. I just don't know. I will get steps for him. There is no stopping him when we are asleep from jumping down. May as well make it as safe as I can. Maybe if I make a line of pee pads he will pee on one. I just wish he would wake me. Not like him at all.

I tried the steps but Zoey won't use it so I made a ramp. Uses it like a pro so if the steps don't do it for your pup, try the ramp. I also have a water bowl by the bathroom door and pee pad in the bathroom in case either her or Magnus needs it. Magnus usually holds it till morning (he's 15 lbs so he can hold longer) but Zoey uses the pad from time to time. I place it in the bathroom b/c it's just easier to clean up in case they "miss". There are times when they have their front paws on the pad but not the back. And they think they're peeing on the pad. LOL

I bought the ramp style.....they would run UP the stairs to get on the bed, but they would NOT use the stairs to go down! I got a scalloped ramp, and they love it....easily go up and down with no issues, and the scalloped ramp provides footing that a straight ramp does not provide.
